  6. QUESTION:
Are fitness and energy drinks good for you?
My boyfriends 12 year old son has moved in with us. When he lived in Idaho with his mother she gave him fitness and engery drinks. Now he wants to drink them here, he says they wake him up in the morning. He is not active in sports and the only exrcise he gets is riding his bike around the neighborhood. So should I let him have them or are they bad for your body if you really don't need to replace vitiams and minerals from exercising?

    • ANSWER:
The "energy" drinks generally have a large hit of caffeine which is not good for a 12 year old. The "fitness" drinks are mostly sugar with a few vitamins tossed in. Both are largely a waste of money. The vitamins, minerals etc are obtained from food and supplements are seldom needed unless you have a malabsorption disease likel celiac.

Treat the drinks like pop (actually a diet Coke would be way cheaper with less caffeine and sugar), limiting consumption to once a week or less as a special treat.

At 12 he should be having a good balanced breakfast with milk, toast or cereal, some protein and fruit. He needs 3-4 servings of milk a day, not sugary, caffeine laced water.

I think you need to pay attention in health class my dear. I answered your other question and it seems to me that you think you cannot have fun at the dance not under the influence of anything. Just go to the dance sober and have your fun after words.

ENERGY drinks do speed up your heart rate hints the energy in the name and are an extremely bad idea for anyone without or without heart problems. I just don't understand why you are so dead bent on either ending your life by drinking this energy drink knowing you shouldn't or your future by trying to down a bottle of vodka before a dance you dam good and well they will be breathalyzing at and thinking you will not get caught. Are these things more important to you then yourself?

Ive adapted to them already, like i can drink a red bull or rockstar and feel a little energized. But the only drink in my fridge is a cocaine energy drink, which i have never tried yet.

  24. QUESTION:
I'm starting to be a fan of "Red Bull" energy drinks. Good or bad?
do you like it? is it bad for me? is it good for me? what?

    • ANSWER:
Bad. Those things are awful for you. They increase your blood pressure, stress levels, and basically wear you out before your time. You should endeavor to stay away from caffeiene in general, but especially the concentrated caffeine and uppers you find in Red Bull, Vault, etc.

  25. QUESTION:
Energy drinks - Good or Bad?
I'm pretty hooked on either Rockstar ZeroCarb or Blue Monsters. They make me less jittery than coffee and I never 'crash' off of them. I have heard some people say they are good for you b/c they have vitamins and other people say they are horrible for you. Any ideas and/or thoughts? If anyone knows of any studies done, that would be greatly appreciated too.

    • ANSWER:
I don't know about Blue Monsters, I do know that Rockstar is pretty tame by comparison to some energy drinks.

You want to watch out for the ones that are overloaded with stimulants, especially caffeine. Some of them now have as much caffeine as four cups of coffee--knocking down that much is likely to have some negative effects.

Also, think about the non-food ingredients. Does your body normally ingest artificial sweetener, artificial color, or high levels of carbonation? No. Have these things been PROVEN harmful? Far from. But moving your food and beverage consumption closer to natural seems like it would be wise.

  26. QUESTION:
why are energy drinks good for you?

    • ANSWER:
They aren't good for you. Specifically your heart, the caffeine over works it.

  27. QUESTION:
Hydrive Energy drinks. Good or bad?
    Hey there

So my local gas station sells these Hydrive energy drinks, but I was wondering about some stuff thats in it, if it is good or bad for you. Or possibly neither.

30 calories, 6g carbs, 6g of sugar per bottle.
    Other stuff is:
    Niacin
    Vitamin E
    Vitamin B6 and B12
    Pantothenic Acid
    Phosphorous
    Sodium
    Potassium
    Caffiene
    Taurine
    L-Cartitine
    L-Arginine
    Magnesium
    Chloride

So if this is bad for you, I will stop drinking it. I am decently active, i do about 15 pull ups, 45 push ups and squats daily. As well as i go out and skateboard 3-5 times a week.

    Thanks!

.nervousness, anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, gastrointestinal upset, tremors, rapid heartbeat, restlessness and pacing. In rare cases, caffeine intoxication can cause death

  29. QUESTION:
Are energy drinks really good for you?
I mean is it just a sell tactic or do they really give you energy and are they good for your body?

    • ANSWER:
They give you energy but they're not necessarily good for you...why? they use sugar and caffeine for a quick boost. Sugar: quick burst of energy but later a low blood sugar leaving you drained. What's better? Whole grain breads, pastas and fruits and vegetables. Eat a balanced diet, and you wont' even need extra energy...your body will have proper fuel. Caffeine: raises your heart rate by constricting your blood vessels. This helps improve athletic performance, but you only need a small amount ( about one cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate/chocolate milke) not an energy drink with several times that amount. You'll actually decrease the body's effectivenss by so much "jolt". AND caffeine is a diuretic, meaning that you'll loose water in your body through urine. So....Stay hydrated and take only a little bit of caffeine to improve your athletic performance. Try a little coffee, chocolate or tea instead

  33. QUESTION:
is energy drink good for you, especially when running?
my friend told me, energy drinks are mainly for keeping you awake, or just simply working out... not for running....
since theres too much sugar, and its bad for youre heart, breathing rate, stamina, etc.....
    is that true?

    • ANSWER:
They are horrible for you when you run. They are a stimulate that raises your heart rate, not provide nutrients to fuel your exercise.
Your heart rate will rise naturally when you run, and having your heart racing before you start will strain your heart and could damage it.
If you are looking for energy while you run look at energy bars or other snacks that are designed to give your body the nutrition that it needs to create energy.
What you want is something that your body will burn as fuel to create the energy needed to run.

  34. QUESTION:
    Energy Drinks good or bad?
How bad are energy drink really for you. I know they have a lot of sugars but i burn 10x more than that in just a couple hours so thats not bad but what about teh taurine adn guarana and stuff? 35. QUESTION:
Are Monster Energy Drinks Good For You?
Are They I drink 1 once a week

    • ANSWER:
Your question is a little tricky. They are not bad for you if they are used as intended and in moderation. But they are not actually good for you.

To be good for you they have to have some benefit for you, to actually increase your health. Just providing energy does not actually qualify as being a benefit. Sports drinks are the same way. As long as they are used to replenish from sports or exercise then they are not bad for you. But energy drinks, and sports drinks are designed to do particular things and not to increase health.

You can safely have 1 a day without any ill effects. Espeicially if you drink extra water to offset the dehydrating effects from the caffeine. This is even more critical if you use them before exercising or playing sports. The last thing you want when you become active and hot is to be dehydrated.

  36. QUESTION:
what are good reasons energy drinks are good for you?
i need reasons for my mom
so that i can drink them because
    they are truly delicious :]

    • ANSWER:
LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER!! those things are horrible!! long-term damage to your body by drinking all of that caffeine in such a concentrated amount. caffeine is a stimulant with many damaging side effects...stunts ur growth, It affects the kidneys, increasing urination, which can lead to dehydration, Evidence suggests that high caffeine intake may accelerate bone loss. One study found that elderly postmenopausal women who consumed more than 300 mg per day of caffeine lost more bone in the spine than women who consumed less than 300 mg per day.

If you need more energy during the day, cut out any fatty fried foods (they taste yummy but make you very tired since ur body works so hard to digest all the fat) drink lots of milk and water and get plenty of rest at night. do these things consistently for a week and you'll notice a huge difference.

  37. QUESTION:
What in energy drinks is good or bad for you and what are some good and bad affects?

    • ANSWER:
Basically everything in energy drinks are bad for you. i.e. guarine, taurine, caffeine, huge amounts of sugar, and other garbage chemicals. The only thing energy drinks do is give you a short burst of energy and then a terrible crash a little while later. They don't work for sports unless you use something like GU-energy gel packs or CLIF energy gel shotss. They only contain small amounts of caffeine and none of the other garbage.

Energy drinks will just mess with your bodies chemistry and reduce your efficiency.
If you want more energy, I suggest eating more natural carbs and fruits that are high in anti-oxidants.

I also recommend FRS energy, it is one of the better ones and doesn't contain guarine, taurine, etc... and it has a lot of anti-oxidants.

  38. QUESTION:

Gatorade is full of sugar. Even most athletes don't drink it.

    • ANSWER:

-partially its expensive, and how bad it is towards your health

For your case ..it is very serious, at the rate of which u progress at, it can be futile towards your heart. latr on.

-although u an i know abt the caffine addiction an crash stuff already. these are only minor affects towards u.

-But permanent affects may be: balding, poor appetite, and anger issues. or loss in semen

-its not the caffeine that creates this but the guarana, ginseg, and milk thistle with in these drinks.

+dont worry abt people saying you'll get addicted to caffeine, because you wont, unless u drink coffee 2+ times a day.

      - caffeine doesnt cause balding either, unless u over do it. but most elderly men bald from stress, etc. (you know) and that the hair root has just died.

I didnt want to be to personal but u must understand the specifics of why specific details mater in order to see the big picture of why things work the way they do.

  44. QUESTION:
are monster energy drinks better for you than soda?

    • ANSWER:
      Not really but maybe.

Most energy drinks are just suped up soda. They have extra sugar and caffeine in them which simply is hardly ever necessary. Many do put some B vitamins in them which is better than soda which adds no nutrients at all. Some energy drinks, and I think Monster is one of them, even adds Ginseng to them too.

So yes Monster is better for you but it isn't either.

Just increase your water intake or change to an actual healthy energy drink like XS Energy, Tab, 5 Hour Energy, or Stacker's 6 Hour Power.

How Healthy is Vitamin Water? What's a good energy drink for long distance running?
The labels make it look like its really good for you but i have also heard that it is not.
Is Vitamin Water healthy or NOT?
please provide reasons or maybe some comparisons as to how it is compared to other energy drinks.
also if you know of any healthy energy drinks for long distance running that would be helpful

    thanks <3

    • ANSWER:
Vitamin Water is just a marketing push to make it seems like a good idea. It has very little amount of vitamins and a lot of sugar making the drink worthless. It is NOT a drink for running because the high sugar content.

I drink Nutrilite Sports Drinks. There is no preservatives, no artificial flavors, no artificial colors, and no high-fructose corn syrup in the Nutrilite drinks. It also as antioxidant benefits. My favorite is the Dragon Fruit flavor that has no sugar. If you are not familiar with Nutrilite, it is an organic vitamin company so there drinks contain lots of vitamins. Go to http://Arcameda.com and search in the search box for hydration to see these products. Hope this helps.

  47. QUESTION:
is a monster energy drink good for kids ?
if its bad what can it do for you i am in the 7th grade i had about 3 though just wondering if its bad for ya

    • ANSWER:
Energy drinks are not designed or intended for kids. The makers do not recommend giving them to kids 12 and under. From 13 - 16 it is iffy. However having an energy drink every now and then will not hurt teens. But Monsters actually count as 2 since it is so large.

Having 3 monsters is really bad. All of the makers recommend against having more than 2 energy drinks in a day. As I said a single can of Monster is already 2 so that should be the most an adult should have. For teens 1, let alone 3 is simply too much for teens. You essentially had 6 energy drinks. That is bad.

Yes these have a lot of sugar and caffeine but it is not as bad as some make it out to be. Soda has as much or more sugar. Coffee has more caffeine. However it is the combination of the two with all of the other stimulatns which can make them bad when too many are consumed. That is why the makers, including those of healthy energy drinks recomend against having more than 2 in a day.

Monsters have 80mg of cafeine per serving. 160 per can. The maximum safe level of caffeine we should consume in a day is 300mg. So two cans too much caffeine for adults, let alone teens. 3 cans has 480mg which is way too much.

Unlike what others are claiming dispute what studies they read energy drinks do not cause heart problems. You can have problems from an elevated heart rate. But that can happen from anything that raises the heart rate including exercise. Blaming the energy drinks is simply ludicrase. However long term effects of excess caffeine on a regular basis can cause heart problems but that really is a seperate issue.

  48. QUESTION:
Are there any signifigant differences between energy drinks and sugar free energy drinks?
I'm doing a science project on if sugar free energy drinks are better than regular energy drinks, so I do ask for some links, please. And if you have any experience with these drinks, please advise me, and tell me which one you feel is better. I know that they aren't good for you anyway, but people drink them anyway, so I'm trying to learn which is better for future reference.

    • ANSWER:
Neither sugar (in plain energy drinks) or sugar substitutes (which are in the sugar-free energy drinks) are very good for you. Sugar is responsible for the epidemic of diabetes worldwide. However, sugar-substitutes contribute to cancer. So I guess you have to pick your poison. I have to drink sugar-free because I am diabetic, but it's the caffeine in it that gives the real energy boost, so, it would be better yet to just take some "No-Doz" (caffeine pills) and skip the sugar-substitutes.

  49. QUESTION:
What foods/drinks are good for energy but...?
    aren't bad for me.

Basically, I'm creating my own little diet basically so that I get everything I need a day. But I want food/drinks that'll give me energy.

Nothing that will rot my teeth or anything though. And not coffee either. No energy drinks.

Is there anything that is good for energy?
    Thanks :)

P.s. This diet isn't important. It's not to lose weight. It's just because I want to take record of what I eat and make sure I get everything I want/need. Don't tell me this is stupid ... you're stupid :)
By the way, I don't know why this question is in "Beer, Wines and Spirits".

    • ANSWER:
Protein. Any protein source with provide the most energy for long-term usage. It will require more caloric expenditure to for the catabolism and anabolism processes which results in energy. Carbohydrates are good for fast usage in times of need say before exercise otherwise and excess may be store as adipose tissue.

  50. QUESTION:
    These energy drinks????????
Are energy drinks good or bad? Some say bad, but manufacturers say good. Sure, right now they may not be too bad, but they haven't been tested long term. For example, what kind of effect will it have after 30-50 years? We don't really know since they haven't been out for too long. What do you think?

    • ANSWER:
I'd say bad. Although they are typically infused with guanine, B vitamins, and other supposedly healthy items, you can get all these things more easily and more cheaply through natural and healthy foods. Also, these energy drinks are loaded with sugar. Most have even more than your average soda! That will give you loads of energy at first, sure, but think about the crash later! Also, the artificial ingredients listed on the sides of the can scare me. I don't know half the stuff listed on there! That can't be good. And you're right: we don't know the lasting effects of these drinks. It's best to steer clear and go for natural energy sources, such as coffee or foods, to give us a boost :)
