      theres no clear evidence whether energy drinks or sodas raise blood pressure. although an energy drink contains about 80mg of caffeine that might raise blood pressure it is not enough to do so as even up to 300mg may just be fine for the body. but regular prolonged use of energy drinks may have some adverse effects. it causes restlessness and anxiety when this happens you start worrying for no reason and this is what can cause the blood pressure to rise, so it may be an indirect effect. thats about the energy drinks.

      sodas might have similar effect only if they contain caffeine otherwise they are just pure sugar/fructose/glucose. what both sodas and energy drinks can cause is diabetes because of high sugary contents. and when you get diabetes your blood pressure may start fluctuate too.

      on average it takes about 10-15 minutes for any drinks to be digested by the system i.e. if an energy drink is responsible for raising blood pressure this is how long it will take after consuming one.

      I take a fairly relaxed attitude to this. The main ingredient of most of these drinks is caffeine, and you wouldn't want to ban people on blood pressure medication from drinking a cup of coffee or two. The important thing is moderation. I can't recommend two cups of strong coffee and then a couple of Red Bulls for anybody even if they are not on medication, especially as some of these energy drinks are actually the equivalent of more than a single cup of coffee. If the blood pressure is properly controlled, there is no great need to worry.

    I came back from the GP after being told that my blood pressure was rather high (160 / 110) but my heart rate was normal at 75.

    Although these blood pressure tests are only one offs and more takings should be done for consistency, but I was wondering if anyone know whether or not this is due to energy drinks consumption?

    I don't drink red bull every day, but when I do drink them, I tend to drink around 2-3 cans a day. I also drink lucozade quite frequently.

      It may cause a short term spike, yes. I haven't seen any conclusive date to suggest energy drinks cause long term problems, although I am aware there is quite a bit of concern over these drinks at the moment.

      2)do not skip meals the day you donate
      3) a granola bar is not considered a meal
      4) drink plenty of water

      They will still take your blood but, should you donate not really, you didn't get enough sleep, and you did drink a lot of caffeine which is a diuretic so it could make you dehydrated.

    How long does it take for drinks (not alcohol) to get into the blood stream? Does the type of drink change it?
    I'm doing science fair this year and I am doing how energy drinks and coffee affect the heart rate compared to water. I need to find out how long after drinking the drink i need to take the heart rate. To do this I need to find out how long it takes to get into the blood stream and actually affect the heart rate.

      I think that the rate of absorption of substances such as guarana, taurine, caffeine which are chemicals often found in energy drinks & coffee does vary from chemical to chemical. I'm no expert, though, so take this with a grain of salt. I know that, if you have a an empty stomach, substances dissolved in a liquid will be absorbed faster than if you had some food in there. Maybe, if you can't find conclusive studies by searching on google or yahoo, you might do a little research into doing your own little clinical trial, which I think is the point of a project to be displayed as an example for fellow students at a science fair. I would set it up so that there was a heart monitor on you ( I'm sure you could find one, they're fairly common medical/science equipment, ask your teacher maybe) and then sample certain drinks on an empty stomach (for the sake of your time spent waiting), record your heartrate at intervals of time, like maybe every 5 minutes or something, for a total of an hour or two. Try a different drink each day for a week and then you'll have results for a number of different drinks. You could make some sweet posters or a big colored chart to highlight your results.
