Dangers Of Energy Drinks

Although there aren't a great deal of documented cases about the d 00004000 angers of energy drinks, the stimulants contained within can disrupt the heart's rhythm and in some rare cases can lead to seizures.

Energy drinks aren't regulated like sodas and juices as they are classified as supplements and manufacturers aren't required to list everything in them. But most energy drinks contain at least as much caffeine as a standard cup of coffee as well as excessive amounts of sugar and legal herbal stimulants.

Common energy drinks include controversial ingredients such as guarana seed, taurine, carnitine, ginseng, inositol, citric acid and ginko biloba. Even though these are basically harmless when taken in low dosages, they can do major damage to people who don't know how to do things in moderation, hence too many people are consuming energy drinks in excess, for the wrong reasons.

It is fairly easy to see that energy drinks are a deceptive combination of soft drink and psuedo-nutritional herbal supplement. The main problem with them is that people tend to abuse them, drinking more than one at a time, or mixing them with alcohol.

Another problem with the use of the herbs is their source. The mass manufacturers of energy drinks are not required by law to list whether or not the herbs they use have been sprayed with toxic pesticides, irradiated or watered with contaminated water supplies, so it is hard to know what other toxins are contained in these drinks and whether or not these herbs will have a negative effect on the body.

Energy drinks manufacturers tend to target high school kids and youth under the age of 30 although they are particularly risky for children and young adults. Those under 18 and anyone with health concerns should not use energy drinks like Spike. Especially those with diabetes and heart complications must avoid them.

You feel stimulated when you drink energy drinks, but it is just that sick feeling that you get when you have a lot of sugar. Experts say all of that caffeine and sugar could be a dangerous combination - especially for young people who may not know where to stop. There have been individuals who either died or had serious medical complications from these beverages.

Sugar, Caffeine and Dhydration:

One os the major dangers of energy drinks is that you may get addicted to them easily due to high sugar and caffeine content. We also know the a lot of sugar can lead to diabetes and other health problems by speeding up the heart rate unnaturally, as well as raising blood pressure, which again could cause problems with people who have issues with their hearts.

The caffeine that is found in energy drinks is dangerous enough on its own. Not only is caffeine addictive, it acts as both a stimulant and a diuretic. As a stimulant, caffeine can make you have anxiety attacks, heart palpitations and insomnia.

When consumed in large or regular quantities, caffeine can also make you jittery or irritable. As a diuretic, caffeine causes your kidneys to remove extra fluid from your body. If you consume energy drinks while sweating, these effects can be particularly dangerous because you can become severely dehydrated quickly.

Many younger people have started mixing energy drinks with alcohol because it makes them feel alert and energetic, even when they are drunk. Because alcohol and caffeine dehydrate your bodies, especially after a night of dancing, there have been many instances where energy drinks mixed with alcohol has caused severe dehydration.

Using energy drinks during or after exercise makes the problem of dehydration worse, and does nothing to provide the body with any necessary nutrients or fluids. Water is and always will be the safest and most effective thirst quencher for adults and children, to avoid the dangers of energy drinks as well.

  5. QUESTION:
what are the dangers of energy drinks?
i love AMP energy....but if i drink it a lot what can happen to me because i know there is a lot of talk about energy drinks being pretty bad

    • ANSWER:
      Severe dehydration.

Energy drinks and other water substitutes that have sugar, caffeine, carbonation and other chemical additives act like diuretics that pull out more water than they contain - as much as 50% more. This results in dehydration.

There are trillions of cells in the body that need vital nutrients to function properly. Water is the delivery system for these nutrients, and salt (combined with the water) removes the toxins from the cells. Without adequate water and salt, the body will turn acidic - the breeding ground for disease.

Dehydration prevents the cells from receiving the nutrients they need. Because there are trillions of cells, we don't notice the change until suddenly a severe health problem such as high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, heart failure and other conditions develop. By then, it's a matter of trying to correct the problem. Medications don't cure, they only hide the symptoms - while the dehydration continues to worsen.

Drinking plain water instead of energy drinks, soft drinks and others will prevent health problems.

  7. QUESTION:
What are the dangers of drinking red bu (energy drinks)?
Does it still cause harm if you drink it in moderation

    • ANSWER:
No, as far as research goes there are no long term effects of drinking energy drinks regularly. It's only a bit dangerous if you drink a lot in one sitting which is generally any more than 1 - 2 cans of any energy drink.

It can be harmful because of how big the energy hit is on the body, it gets too hyped up with sugar and caffeine and then the nerves move too quickly and can get damaged. And of course if you drink too many you will probably be sick and/or pass out which is also very bad.

But if you drink them in moderation and no more than 1 - 2 a day you should be fine, but know your limits and if you think you feel a bit sick even after 1 then don't bother drinking any more.

  8. QUESTION:
what are the dangers of drinking energy drinks?

    • ANSWER:
Energy drinks' stimulating properties can boost the heart rate and blood pressure (sometimes to the point of palpitations), dehydrate the body, and, like other stimulants, prevent sleep.

Energy drinks should not be used while exercising as the combination of fluid loss from sweating and the diuretic quality of the caffeine can leave the user severely dehydrated.

Know what you're drinking. Energy drinks are not necessarily bad for you, but they shouldn't be seen as "natural alternatives" either. Some of the claims they make like "improved performance and concentration" can be misleading. If you think of them as highly-caffeinated drinks, you'll have a more accurate picture of what they are and how they affect you. You wouldn't use Mountain Dew as a sports drink. And a drink like Red Bull and vodka is more like strong coffee and whisky than anything else.

  9. QUESTION:

  10. QUESTION:
    The dangers of Energy drinks?
Hi ive recently taken a likening to the latest energy drink called "Samedi" you may have heard of it. Its very powerful and large in size but apparently energy drinks are really bad for you. Can you guys tell me the affects and dangers they have? Thanks..

PS: Can they make you put on wieght?

    • ANSWER:
      Hi,

The danger of energy drinks is mostly from the caffeine and sugar content. The effects of too much sugar is obvious--weight gain, lack of nutrition, and tooth decay.

As for the caffeine, the FDA does not have to monitor the amount of caffeine in energy drinks. Some of them contain more caffeine than 20 cans of coke, all in one can! The recommended amount of caffeine for one day is fairly low, about the equivalent of a small cup of coffee. So ingesting all that caffeine is no good.

Effects of caffeine in excess include jitteriness, heart palpitations, and stomach upset. There have been many studies done with caffeine and its effects on the brain. Caffeine is considered a drug and your brain does get physically dependent on it. I know it sounds weird, but people who drink a lot of caffeine actually suffer from physical withdrawals when they stop drinking it.

I really don't like energy drinks because I know how bad they are for you. I do drink coffee and coca-cola but I keep it all to a minimum. When I was younger, I drank tons of caffeine every day and it contributed to chronic digestive issues which I've been hospitalized from and have caused me to suffer for years now.

I don't know, I don't want to sound like I'm lecturing, but I just think it's horrible that the FDA doesn't tell consumers that they don't make sure energy drinks are safe. They should have to put it on the can...

  11. QUESTION:

  12. QUESTION:
Is the caffeine in guarana listed in the caffeine information on energy drinks?
I'm doing some research on the dangers of energy drinks. I came across a fact that guarana, often found in energy drinks, is very high in caffeine. Apparently, guarana seeds contain more caffeine than coffee beans. Monster and Rockstar both have 160mg of caffeine per can. Just wondering, does that number include the caffeine found in guarana?

    • ANSWER:
yes. guarana is a substance that has high levels of caffeine, but it is included in the caffeine content of the drink. I think guarana is about 20 percent caffeine, so 100 mg of guarana yields maybe 20 mg of caffeine.

  13. QUESTION:
What are the dangers of the energy drink 'Mother'?
Yesterday i had about half of a 500ml can of Mother and today i had a full can of Mother and i feel sick (Headache, Mild Diarrhea, Dizziness, Dry Mouth). I rarely (1 in my life before these two) ever drink Mother. So i want to know what are the dangers of drinking Mother?

    • ANSWER:
read your can next time you buy it
and call the help line or customer service to talk to them about the effects your having from there product.
I'm sure there is a warning on the can, that it is not recomended to drink many of there drinks.
      I wonder why?

  14. QUESTION:
    Dangers of Energy Drinks?
I used to be a heavy energy drink consumer. I drank it all, Monster, Red Bull, Full Throttle and Rockstar. Every energy drink I had ever drank, I never had any bad effects. I'm 16 and 170LBS., so I thought I could handle them very well, and I did. But one school day I picked up two NOS bottled energy drinks. I drank one in 1st Period, and I started to feel very abnormal, increased heart rate, cold sweats, shakiness, and light- headiness. I didn't think anything of it, I thought I was having anxiety, so I ignored it and drank the other NOS at lunch three hours later. The symptoms got worse. Then I had P.E. and I ran one mile in that class. So the symptoms got worse again, because of all of the physical exertion. I think panic also played a big part in it. What I don't understand is why I could drink every other energy drink and feel completely normal, but when I drink 1 NOS I got all of those symptoms out of nowhere. I've heard that NOS was the worst energy drink to have, but then again so is Red Bull, and one night I drank eight Red Bulls in three hours, and only had a stomach ache the next day. What I want to know is why NOS did this to me and no other energy drink did, and as l long as I stay away from NOS, if I could drink them every now and again.

    • ANSWER:
You were just dehydrated. The caffeine will cause an elevated heart rate but you just are not always as aware of it, especially if you don't have any other symptoms. Since caffeine dehydrates us more the energy drinks just compounded the problem. As far as the shakiness goes that is related to the sugars in the energy drink. Did you have much too eat before that too?

Before consuming any energy drink have 2 glasses (16 ounces of water first). We feel tired when we are not properly hydrated. If after 15 minutes you feel that you don't need an energy drink, then you didn't as you were just dehydrated. If you still feel tired than have one along with another glass of water. Remember that since the caffeine in energy drinks dehydrate us we need to replenish that water quickly or we can have ill effects. The more dehydrated we are the worse those effects are. I always recommend 1 ounce of water for every 5mg of caffeine. Energy drinks typically have 80 - 84 mg of caffeine per 8 ounce serving.

  15. QUESTION:

LOOKING TO DO A SCHOOL PROJECT ON ENERGY DRINKS WITH CAFFEINE AND ITS PROS AND CONS?

    • ANSWER:
There are lots of studies on the pros and cons of caffeine if you just search it on the web. 16. QUESTION:
What is a catchy way to start my presentation on energy drinks?
I have to give a presentation on the dangers/health effects of energy drinks and how the marketing strategies of companies lead to the dangers. I want to start my presentation off with something interesting but dont know what to do. Please Help!

    • ANSWER:
You could start with slogans that the manufactures use to advertise their drinks, ie:

They give you wings, they let you party like a rock star etc but what else can they give you: nervousness, irritability, anxiety, tremulousness, muscle twitching insomnia, headaches, or even kill you.

You could finish with something like, so indeed they can give you wings in more ways than one. (as in the wings of an angel, if you should die)

  17. QUESTION:
is there any danger in drinking 4 energy drinks?
just wondering because sometimes im so drained of energy that 1 or 2 wouldnt do anything (i blame depression)

    • ANSWER:
If you think you are depressed, do not use energy drinks.. It could make matters worse.
Using caffeine to treat depression is not recommended. Even though the short-term effects may relieve symptoms, long-term use can cause anxiety, irritability and even lead to a more severe depression. Caffeine can increase anxiety, restlessness and stress levels. Depression is serious. Do not procrastinate. There are medications that can help treat depression and caffeine is not one of them. Energy drinks are loaded with caffeine and many other herbs and chemicals. Red Bull was banned in France due to a fatality.

  18. QUESTION:
what are the dangers of taking lorazapam and monster energy drink?
I was told that while taking lorazapam you shouldn't drink monster energy drinks is this true? what are the dangers of mixing the two?

    • ANSWER:
Lorazapam is generally used to treat anxiety. It falls into a class of drugs called benzodiazepines, like valium, xanax and others . The problem with benzos is that it is easy to get addicted to them. Often you have to keep increasing the dosage for the drug to work. I speak from experience, since I have been addicted to a benzo called klonopin for many years. If you go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorazepam you will see:

"Long-term effects of benzodiazepines include tolerance, dependence, a benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome and cognitive impairments which may not completely reverse after cessation of treatment; however, for most patients, cognitive impairment is not severe. Withdrawal symptoms can range from anxiety and insomnia to seizures and psychosis. Due to tolerance and dependence, lorazepam is recommended for short-term use, 2–4 weeks only."

While lorazepam and the other benzos tend to relax people, the monster energy drink is mostly caffeine, sugar and other ingredients that are designed to stimulate you. http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/601415/monster_energy_drinks_unleashing_an.html?cat=51

So lorazepam is trying to relax you, and the monster drink is stimulating you. The two taken together will probably cancel each out. One drug is trying to calm you down, while the other drug is trying to speed you up.

  19. QUESTION:
Are energy drinks harmful to teenagers?
My younger brother turned 16 this past week. For a while now he has been drinking so called energy drinks on the odd occassion when he has money. For his birthday though he got a fair amount of money and has used some of it to stock up on 4-packs of energy drinks like mother, rockstar, wicked (not sure if they are only Australian brands). The past 2 days he's had 2 cans each day even though the max daily intake is one can. I don't even think he should be drinking 1 can. Especially when he has also recently taken up going to the gym for hours at a time doing weights and other exercises. That in itself I think is potentially harmful because I think he is overdoing it. Given that he's going through puberty and his body is at a sensitive time and going through many changes I think he should be careful in how he treats it.

Several friends and family members have tried to explain the dangers of energy drinks (and overdoing exercise). But my brother says that he had two cans yesterday and survived so he can have two cans today. Plus he's at the stage where he thinks he knows everything and is right about everything. So I thought if I have proof...

What kind of harm can energy drinks cause, especially in teenagers. CAn it have an accumulatove effect so that one drink now and again won't cause harm but one drink every day can add up?
Sources would be appreciated too so my brother doesn't just think I'm making it up...
I forgot to add an important piece of information, sorry. On the occasions when he has had 2 cans that day he has been observed by myself and others as acting though he is high on a sugar rush (or just plain high or drunk). He'll start talking louder and faster and rambling on making not much sense , he'll start being silly/stupid and also do stuff that really are not all that appropriate in public like going to friends and family members places of work and shouting hi repeatedly and loudly to them from across the store and then try and shove his can of energy drink in their face gong, again loudly, "want some?!"

    • ANSWER:
I did a search on "what are the dangers of energy drinks" in google and I found a few sites for you to show your brother.

In one of the articles it clearly states that energy drinks can cause heart problems.
      " Dangers of Energy Drinks"

Red Bull may give you wings, but apparently, it also increases your risk of several health problems including heart attack and stroke, according to an Australian study. The proliferation of booster beverages such as Red Bull, Rock Star and Monster on the market has health professionals and organizations calling for more warning labels about the dangers of energy drinks.

  20. QUESTION:
the dangers of the new monster energy drinks with nitrous oxide?
I tried one of the new monsters with nitrous oxide in it last night...usually energy drinks get me really wired, so my boyfriend bought it and i decided to drink it to get really hyper cuz it seemed high powered. but then i started feeling really weird.

light headed, dizzy, it was difficult to breath and occasionally my heart beat would cause dull sharp pains. i came home and i had a 101 temperature.

i also have cardio-myopathy, a heart condition. and the fever is gone today, but i find it difficult to breath, and alot of pressure on my chest.

is this because of the energy drink?

    • ANSWER:
With your condition, you should NEVER drink or eat ANYTHING that will make your heart work overtime. Anything that has caffeine, or tons of sugar, or even things like sleeping pills that lower your heart rate and blood pressure, you should not take...ever...period. Nitrous Oxide is a sedative by the way (slows your heart rate) and it is basically "laughing gas". So there is a sedative in the drink, and tons of caffeine too: you practically just drank a speed ball! When uppers and downers are consumed together, it can make your heart work overtime and cause palpatations since one ingredient is slowing it down and the other ingredient is speeding it up. You could cause some serious harm to yourself by doing this, and if you do it enough, it could cause permanent damage or shock to your system. Honestly, no one should drink this; not just you. Stay away from that stuff and take care of your body.

    Energy drinks linked with weightloss?
Ive started drinking a litre of diet kick (tescos version of redbull) and found ive started losing weight because of it. does anyone know of any dangers of drinking it or risks associated with it? x
PS, of course Im not just drinking it and not eating that would be stupid! I eat 3 balanced meals a day and exercise for at least an hour

    • ANSWER:
After my last baby I went into 'lose baby weight mode' (as you do!) and drank 'V' everyday, just a couple of cans and also walked with my baby. I have no doubt the V helped, especially with the energy levels, perhaps the extra energy helped me move more therefore helped lose the weight. I also took Fatblaster and the weight started to come off so fast I actually got a little scared! It slowed tho and was all good.
But I do think the energy drinks help a little. If anything all that caffeine will increase your metabolism. But eat right too :)

PS there was a story on tv about a guy who drank 8 cans of red bull in 1 day...it nearly killed him!!!! MODERATION Is the key :)

  23. QUESTION:
What dangers can a "RedBull" energy drink pose?
What if u dont eat alot and u drink lots of redbulls, wat can happen?
What if u just drink alot of them period?
and mension any other dangers or threats it may pose.

    • ANSWER:
Red Bull, like most energy drinks, has blood thinning ingredients. These, plus the stimulating of the heart can cause you to pass out or, if cut, bleed excessively.

When drinking it with any form of alcohol, the increased blood rate will cause your body to absorb the alcohol faster causing you to feel the effects of the alcohol faster.

  24. QUESTION:
    Dangers of Monster energy drink?
I traded a friend a old yu gi oh card that i had under my bed from when I was 10 for a Monster Hitman shot. After I drank it to help me focus in math, he told me it was 1 year old. Later, my mom noticed this weird...swelling or lump on the right side of my neck. It's not painful or anything, in fact, I wouldn't have noticed if she hadn't told me. I may have already had it before but I doubt it. I haven't been bit by a bug or hit there. The only thing I had and still have are these weird whitespots probbally due to my lack of veggies (I puke violently after eating them for some reason). Could it be from the Monster? My mom's taking me to the doctor in a few days to check it out, as she learned that if we wait it could be like my old infection that I got around age 9. I'm almost 17 FYI and a male if that helps. I know kid's under 15 or so shouldn't have ED's. I never have energy drinks either. It's pretty rare for me. I usually stick with some caffeinated soda to help me.

    • ANSWER:
I drink monster daily, and I've drunken month old monster before. I doubt that has anything to do with it, the bump was most likely there before. If not- It may have been an allergic reaction of some sort.
      Best of luck

  25. QUESTION:
is it safe to drink energy drinks with adhd?
is it dangers for a teen of 14yo old to drink energy drinks because my parents keep telling me that my heart will explode if i drink an energy drink? thanks for your help

    • ANSWER:
Too much caffeine can be harmful to anyone with adhd or not, especially if large amounts are consumed in a short amount of time. Caffeine is a stimulant and can actually increase your heart-rate,by how much is depending on how much you are ingesting. Some energy drinks actually have warnings on the back of the can or bottle, letting you know not to drink more than what is recommended.

Energy drinks especially do not mix well with exercise because the caffeine can actually make you more dehydrated. You're better off drinking Gatorade, even though it has a lot of sugar in it.

  26. QUESTION:
Why is it considered a caution to mix Red Bull energy drinks with alcohol?
I was just wondering, as it says on the can Caution: Not recommended to be mixed with alcohol. What are the dangers of actually mixing it?

    • ANSWER:
because the things that they put in energy drinks (like caffeine and guarana) are stimulants (increases heart rate) and alcohol is a depressant (decreases heart rate) if you increase and decrease your heart rate too rapidly, it can lead to heart issues.

  27. QUESTION:
What's all this hype and danger talk about Energy Drinks?
I was watching the news and out of nowhere they started talking about how energy drinks will cause serious health problems and will give you heart attacks. I drink energy drinks here and their, mainly cause I've cut down alot. But, in the day, I used to drink three or four daily, and experienced no health problems besides rapid beating heart sometimes (which is normal cause of the caffeine content) and pretty much just a stimulated mind state. Other than that, no other health problems.

So, are energy drinks really as bad as the media is making them out to be? Can energy drinks be safely consumed if used only here and their? And also, has their been any recorded deaths caused by drinking energy drinks?

    • ANSWER:
They've been linked to deaths in Europe & banned in France
      http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/5753.php

No thorough studies have been made yet, but massive doses of stimulants (especially in developing bodies) are probably not a great idea.

  28. QUESTION:

Birkel) concluded that Red Bull has excessive amounts of caffeine.[4] Denmark has also banned that particular drink. Britain also investigated the drink, but issued a warning against its use only by pregnant women.[4]

  29. QUESTION:
whats the full dangers of 5 hour energy drink?

    • ANSWER:
It is about an overdose of vitamin B6. When too much of this vitamin makes its way into the body, then there are high chances that the user may be hit with nerve toxicity or paralysis. However, this does not happen just out of the blue. One has to drink about 5 bottles of this drink to invite such troubles.
When we come to the question, "Is 5 hour energy safe for you?", we cannot just ignore the importance to tell the users about caffeine. What harm can too much caffeine do to the body? Too much of this substance does not take long to throw the person into fits of involuntary shaking, vomiting, nausea, panic attacks, irregular heart beat and even disorientation. As if these 5 hour energy side effects were not enough, the user may also suffer from diarrhea, headaches, dehydration and in some cases, gastrointestinal pain. So all these side effects may answer your question

No your heart will not explode, as for any other dangers regarding having adhd, idk.

  33. QUESTION:
Are there any dangers of the "5 Hour Energy" drink?
I am having to do a 8 hour drive tomorrow and will not be able to leave until I put in 5 hours of work. I bought a 2 pack of the drink "5 Hour Energy" because I have been experiencing travel fatigue with multi hour driving. Is there any dangers associated with the "5 Hour Energy" drink?

    • ANSWER:
read the label. it clearly says not to exceed a recommended daily dose. listen to that. and also, things like that claim that it 'helps restore metal alertness and wakefulness, when experiencing fatigue or drowsiness,'... but wut it doesnt tell you is that you become alert to EVERYTHING around you, and end up having an attention span of a puppy. okay for driving, bad if your trying to get work done.

  34. QUESTION:
What are the dangers of drinking 5 Hour Energy?

    • ANSWER:
HEADACHES, NAUSEA, VOMITING, DIAHRIA, NO SLEEP, HEART ATTACKS, TREMORS,ETC

  35. QUESTION:
About those new 5-hour energy drinks...?
So do they work as well as they're advertised? I've been up all night and I know I'll end up falling asleep at class. I heard they work well and can keep people up all night, mostly I've just heard of people getting really fast heart beats and...blushing??? Is there any danger/side effects using the drink compared to getting a Monster or Red Bull?

    • ANSWER:
I don't know. I have not tried them and have not asked others that have if they last that long. I can't imagine that it can. I do know they taste very nasty from waht everyone says.

Energy drinks are good to help when you have not had enough sleep. However, it is important to keep in mind that this should not be done all of the time. There simply is no replacement for sleep.

It is safer than Monster and Red Puke though because of what they do and don't use in it. I am not sure how people get fast heart beats and so on since it supposedly does not contain caffeine.

I use another healthy energy drink called XS Energy. They are the ones that pioneered using B vitamins to give energy rather than sugar and caffeine 6 years ago. 5 Hour Energy is following their lead, as is Stacker 2's 6 Hour Power. When they first came out my friend had one at 10:00 p.m. and he said it was 3:00 a.m. before he could go to bed so maybe they can last that long. Since it is providing nutrtion maybe it will have longer lasting effects.

  36. QUESTION:
Lots of rumors bout energy drinks?
I drink energy drinks almost every day, including 5 hour stuffs,so my question hwre is,is there any danger to the body?,anything proven?,id been hearing lots of things, different "urban legends" about it,anyone knows?

    • ANSWER:
Yes. My husband had drank a monster and some mt dew last year and we ended up in the ER with his heart racing at 237 beats a minute. They had him hooked up to the crash cart and gave him drugs to slow his heart rate and was prepared to have to shock his heart back into rhythm. They can be very dangerous and I know drinking anything else with caffeine in it makes it worse. Please be careful.

  37. QUESTION:
Are energy drinks bad for all people?
I mean honestly, I was drinking a 12 pack of redbull a week for 3 months. The only problem I saw was that I was losing my abs. lol. That's the main reason I stopped, also by hearing about the dangers. Maybe some people are more sensitive to energy drinks? I don't know. Because I didn't feel any different from drinking besides my weight. I am turning 20 years old in a couple months.
I just want your opinion. I have not drank a single energy drink in the entire month of february just to see the differences.

    • ANSWER:
it affects everyone differently and yes it is very bad for you ....i mean don't get me wrong i just turned 22 and ive been drinking monster every day since i was 15 .... as long as you are relatively active afterwards to burn off a little extra energy it is perfectly fine but if you drink like 3 energy drinks just while your playing xbox or something then it is bad for your heart and raises your blood pressure ...which would be fine if you were going to the gym or going to work but just don't drink them and be lazy afterwords and i say drink up. look and no matter what anyone else tells you ...don't drink the low carb or diet energy drinks because they are just as bad for you and taste like crap so if your gonna drink em do it right....

and yes it is like alchol everyone is diferent when they drink them ...i have friends who will drink one and be bouncing off the walls all day and i have some who feel like crap afterwords and dont drink them at all ...me i could drink 10 and be ok but i dont drink pop/soada anymore only energy drinks once a day because in a health perspective they are not good if your trying too lose weight or if ur a health nut but as for all the rumors ...as long as your active afterwords u can drink as much as u want

  39. QUESTION:
Energy Drinks for 13yr old? Monster, Venom, Full Throttle?
My 13yr old son pesters me to allow him to drink these energy drinks. They have a label saying "not for pregnant women or young children". I am not so scared of the caffeine and sugar but those herbal additives like Ginseng and Guarana are steroids! On a trip to China, a doctor told us those are for old people with heart conditions and can seriously damage liver and glands in people under 60.

I see other kids his age drinking those like water, 3 or 4 a day! As a teacher I saw a 14 yr old faint and found out he had ingested nothing but Red Bull and Hot Cheetos for 2 days, so sad.

Any thoughts or opinions out there? I am SO sick of him bugging me. Not that there is any danger of me caving in.
    Rachel,
I would be curious as to how he gets the - to pay for them, or convinces a friend to buy one for him. I am not controlling, just trying to teach him healthy habits. Hearing "no" actually builds life skills in kids....he may or may not drink them on his own but under my watch and on my dime I refuse to cave. Hello? I wish I had an extra to spend a drink for crying out loud!

    • ANSWER:
While I am an addict of 5 hr energy shots, I do not, and would not let my son (14) have one. Children have no sense, and could easily O.D. on them.

I believe I read recently where a guy overdosed on caffeine and died. http://www.myfoxdc.com/dpp/health/man-dies-of-caffeine-overdose-ncxdc-102910 So sad that such a lack of common sense had to result in death. If a full grown "adult" could make such a mistake, what's to stop a young teen with even less ability to assess risk?

  41. QUESTION:
What are the health dangers of drinking a drink like "5 hour energy"?

    • ANSWER:
If you have high blood pressure or any heart problems, I'd stay away from these. If you are just having one occasionally, it should be okay, but you don't want to overdo it. Of course some people will say not to drink any caffeine at all, but if you are healthy and have it in moderation, you will be fine.

  43. QUESTION:
I think i am a bad writer can anyone give me their opinion?
I just graduated high school and have been writing many scholarship essays but i do not seem to win. I am about to start college and i am scared that i might not be ready any advice? The following is a sample on a scholarsip about "why it is important to practice healthy lifestyles in school"?

Unfortunately, many students have the habit of either skipping breakfast before going to school or not getting enough sleep. What they do not realize is that aside from affecting their health, skipping breakfast and not getting enough sleep also affects them in school. It is important for students to practice healthy lifestyles in and out of school because it will help them be healthy so they can have good attendance, be energized and focused throughout the school day, and ultimately do well academically.
Doing well in school can be challenging for students if they have poor attendance. Everyone knows that the first step in earning good grades is to be in class everyday. Which is why it is important for students to maintain healthy lifestyles so they can be healthy to attend school everyday. A big part of having a healthy lifestyle is practicing good hygiene. But being healthy can seem difficult especially since everyone is surrounded by germs especially students in school. They are virtually everywhere, doorknobs, toilets, windows, desks the list is endless. Unfortunately germs make people sick and can even send them to the hospital. The good news is that germs and the illnesses they can cause are preventable. Practicing good hygiene is the key to avoiding them. Of course we can’t get rid of all germs but with good hygiene students have less of a chance of becoming ill. Good hygiene can go a long away. If students practice good hygiene they can avoid getting sick and prevent unnecessary absences from school. If students practice good hygiene when they are young it will make it easier for them to practice it in the future because they are so used to it that it will be like second nature to them.
Students who do not practice healthy lifestyles usually have a lack of energy or have trouble concentrating in class. That lack of energy and minimum concentration ability often prevents students from learning. A serious problem that lack of energy leads to among students is the consumption of energy drinks, coffee, and other energy related products. A large amount of students who consume energy drinks or energy products often abuse them in hopes of increasing energy and being more alert. They are using energy products to make up for their lack of sleep or fatigue resulting from not practicing a healthy lifestyle. Because of the high levels of sugar and caffeine in energy products students can become addicted to them which can cause serious health problems. In order to avoid the dangers of energy drinks and other energy products, students should practice healthy lifestyles so that they are always well rested and energized. If students practice a healthy lifestyle they will have no need to turn to artificial energy which can affect their health. A few important actions that students should include in their lifestyle are to getting enough sleep, eating nutritious foods, and exercising regularly. Being well rested and eating breakfast is especially important for students because it gives them the energy they need for the school day. From Personal experience I can say that being well rested and eating breakfast definitely has a positive impact on school performance. It allows you to think clearer and be more attentive in the classroom. Unfortunately not many students realize how important a healthy lifestyle is in school. But schools should work on influencing the benefits of a healthy lifestyle especially for young students because they are developing and their bodies need to be healthy so they can grow.
It is important for all students to lead a healthy lifestyle because it has a tremendous impact on their academic performance. Students who practice a healthy lifestyle are more likely to do better than those who do not. The reason being that a healthy lifestyle increases a students ability to learn. Students who do not lead healthy lifestyles usually have trouble concentrating in class and their poor concentration ability will prevent them from learning, therefore resulting in bad grades. Any unhealthy lifestyle such as lack of sleep and poor nutrition can make students irritable and reduce their effort in the classroom. It will also prevent them from thinking clearly. On the other hand students who practice healthy lifestyles will feel ready to learn and will be able to concentrate on their work. A healthy lifestyle can even help students raise their test scores. Doctors have even said that eating breakfast and getting a good night sleep will increase a students test scores. A healthy lifestyle is beneficial for all students to practice.
If students want to do well in school they need to make sure they

    • ANSWER:
4 long paragraphs on the importance of breakfast and a good nights' sleep? That's one paragraph at most. Expand on your topic to include other things that might compromise a students' ability to learn, especially in college. How about drinking, sexual promiscuity, too many extracurricular activities such as clubs, parties, games, etc. Mention the importance of study habits, and how a person can sometimes even find a class on developing good habits. Talk about how a student should engage with his or her professors in order to develop a passion for what is being learned. Good nutrition in general is a problem for college students, who tend to live on ramen noodles and hot pockets.

I have to give a speech on a health and/or safety topic. Do you have any ideas?
I just can't think of a good subject to write the speech on. I don't want it to be about something everyone already knows a ton about, like smoking, or obesity. I want it to be somewhat original, with a lot of statistics to back it up. In previous years I have done the speech on fire safety, sports safety, and distracted driving. This year I want to be more different, I was going to do the speech on aspartame dangers but there just isn't enough conclusive effidence for that, and I also thought about doing it on the dangers of energy drinks but once again just not enough factual information. Do you have any good ideas? please help.

How long can I stay awake before hurting myself?
Some friends and I are planning a never sleep a thon, where we just dont sleep for as long as possible. I am wanting to know the dangers of this before I commit. Any ideas?

we arent planning to use any energy drinks or any thing like that.

    • ANSWER:
Its very unlikely that you will cause any physical damage by not sleeping, particularly if you aren't going to use any artificial stimulants.

The longest documented period that a person has stayed awake, with no sleep at all, is around 11 days. I have personally gone for extended periods on 1-2 hours per night with no ill effects. Watch out for hallucinations---seeing things out the corner of your eye that aren't there---around day 3, and negative hallucinations----not seeing things that are there---- around day 4 or 5, along with possible poor memory and decreased judgement. You may also possibly experience episodes of extra-ordinarily lucid, inspired thoughts, and emotional openness.
Any such symptoms will disappear after a good nights sleep, or two.
Make sure that you have no serious responsibilities or try to drive or operate any type of potentially dangerous machinery. Would be a good idea to have a couple of sitters that sleep in shifts. Be safe.
