Effects Of Energy Drinks

The natural health researchers at Institute for Vibrant Living (IVL) have investigated the possible adverse effects of consumption of energy drinks in younger people. Here is their report:

Energy Drink Explosion

The consumption of highly-caffeinated energy drinks has dramatically risen in the last few years with revenues currently exceeding $3.5 billion a year and growing.

Many of these drinks boast a variety of ingredients like ginkgo, ginseng, amino acids and vitamins, but they also often contain high amounts of sugar, and the primary active ingredient is caffeine.

There is growing unease over the use of these energy drinks and the possible health effects among children, adolescents and young adults.

Reportedly, thirty to fifty percent of this population periodically consumes these super-charged energy drinks with about one third of 12-to 24-year-olds admitting to daily use.

Because they are served cold, there is a possibility that energy drinks may be consumed more quickly than hot drinks and in larger amounts.

Adverse effects like seizures, diabetes, cardiac problems and mood or behavioral disorders have been linked to the consumption of energy drinks, especially with use among children, teens and young adults.

An Alarming Trend

This trend is a growing source of concern for medical personnel, parents and school officials as the drinks are increasingly associated with emergency-room visits.

Dr. Guy Shochat, an emergency room doctor in Berkeley, California, treated an 18-year-old last year who had arrived in an ambulance with abnormal hearth rhythms.

To stay alert for his night job, the teen admitted to drinking eight 16-ounce energy drinks per evening.

Unregulated Energy Drink Formulas

While the content of caffeine in soft drinks is not regulated by the FDA, the agency recommends 68 milligrams or less per 12-ounce serving.

A study published in the Journal of Analytical Toxicology examined ten popular energy drinks for caffeine content and found levels as high as 141 milligrams in a 16-ounce serving.

A 12-ounce serving of the energy drink, Monster, contains a whopping 120 milligrams of caffeine, Red Bull offers 116 milligrams and Amp contains 107 milligrams per 12 ounces.

In comparison, an equal amount of Coca-Cola or Pepsi contains 34 to 38 milligrams of caffeine.

An Alarming Trend?

According to a recent survey by researchers at Chicago's Northwestern University, there were more than 250 reports of caffeine overdose to the Illinois Poison Control Center over a span of three years.

The average age of those involved was 21.

Another concern is the mounting popularity of mixing energy drinks with alcohol, which can make adolescent and young adult users feel less inebriated.

According to a 2006 study, however, motor coordination and reaction time in individuals are just as impaired as when drinking alcohol alone.

The Jury Is Out

There is little evidence on the long-term effects of caffeine on children and teenagers. At the very least, however, it has been shown that caffeine creates physiological and psychological dependence in adults.

Parents, teachers and medical personnel should make an attempt to become more educated about the possible adverse effects of highly-caffeinated drinks on children, adolescents and young adults.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Im doing a project on the negative effects of energy drinks?
The topic is How do Energy Drinks effect Heart Rate. I know it increases it, but what are some other negative effects even other that heart rate changes? Thanks. And dont worry. You're not doing my homework for me. This is only for background info.

    • ANSWER:
Well just because energy drinks raise the heart rate does not make that a negative effect.

Most of the bad effects from energy drinks result from using too many or not from drinking enough water.

People talk about the crash but that is only from the sugars and only if not properly hydrated. Caffeine dehydrates us so if we do not drink enough water to offset this then we feel the sugar crash or it is even intensified if we are dehydrated enough. With plenty of water in our system the caffeine, taurine, B vitamins, and other stimulants take over where the sugar lets off and the sugar crash is not even noticed.

All of the makers, including those of healthy energy drinks suggest against having more than 2 in a day. It is not just becuae of the caffeine. It is because of the total amount of all of the stimulants in them. That much will keep your heart rate up and keep your brain and body going wven when you need to rest and sleep. That is when they can get dangerous.

Regular ones are worse then healthy ones. The sugars provide a lot of carbs and calories. Plus there are not many B vitamins in regular energy drinks yet they are essential for energy. Caffeine also depletes us of B vitamins and the ones in regular energy drinks either replaces what was removed or very little more so the are not very effective. Healthy energy drinks put in a bunch more B vitamins to not only offset what is lost but to give us energy. Plus healthy ones also have caffeine free versions too.

Ok, so I chosen to be Abstinent to alchohol, but i've found that energy drinks sorta give me the same feeling. So i was wondering, are their any side effects of drinking a few energy drinks. Especially like any long term ones?
Yea Im not stupid. I would for sure not be drinking them everyday, But you know, they help me kind of loosen up. Just a couple now and then i just don't want to mess up my body for something stupid like that.

    • ANSWER:
These drinks tends to be high in sugar and caffeine. They can raise your blood pressure and heart rate very high. They are NOT soft drinks (although they are marketed as one).
Personally - I wouldn't recommend ANYONE under 15 years old to drink it - but of course you drank alcohol so you should old enough.

People have been know to be so hyped up on it that they do crazy things and lose control (One case I know of a young man drank more than 5 of these in one hit and totally lost control of his senses - took a car and drove at high speed ended up crashing into a wall - killed. Not making this up - it actually happened)
Your brain just can't handle that much caffeine. So careful of how much you drink per day.

Long term affect is possible kidney damage, heart failure, brain damage.

Like anything else - all things in moderation. I'd hate to see you in a hospital.

      Cheers

  33. QUESTION:
What are the long term effects of energy drinks?
Like drinking one red bull a day?

    • ANSWER:
Most energy drinks are loaded with caffeine. One Red Bull for example has as much sugar as 5 cans of Pepsi. I know of a guy in college that drank so much Red Bull that he developed Diabeties. This is possible. Migraines and addiction can develop from drinking these too often. The reason energy give you energy is not from the vitamins like they lead you to believe on their labels. The energy comes from the high amount of sugar and caffeine. That is why after it wears off you have this "crash" where you feel even more tired. That is a sugar crash. There are a few energy drinks out there that actually have a very high amount of B Vitamins and little to no sugar. If you drink any at all, I would recommend these.

  34. QUESTION:
what are the side effects of energy drinks?
and which energy drink product is safe for health?

    • ANSWER:
well energy drinks are of course full of vitamin b,taurine, and cafine. those are the ones that effects you the most. too much vitamin b in a diet is unhealthy as it slows down the ability to absorb other things. Taurine is found naturally in our bodies and in some foods, such as seafood and meat. It is believed to play a role in muscle contraction and may detoxify and cleanse the body of harmful substances, though there are no definitive scientific studies confirming this, and cafine increases heart rate and blood pressure, and can cause dehydration and prevent sleep.

  37. QUESTION:
what are the effects of energy drinks?
is it true they kill brain cells? and what are the other effects

    • ANSWER:
What I do to know if I should eat or drink something is look at the ingredients. So, lets look at the common ingredients of energy drinks.

~Caffeine: No matter how good your diet may be, that caffeine your drinking can wreak havoc on your health for the rest of the day. Caffeine stimulates the adrenal glands, leading eventually to adrenal exhaustion and symptoms like fatigue, lack of physical endurance and stamina, impaired ability to deal with stress, depressed immune system, allergic reactions, weight gain, low blood pressure, dizziness and lightheadedness or blacking out when standing up. Caffeine also stimulates the liver to release more sugar in the blood stream and further stresses the body's delicate sugar-regulating mechanism. Besides creating major hormonal imbalances in the body, caffeine also impairs calcium absorption.

~Taurine: Taurine is essential to digestion and the functioning of the brain and retina. But you could also get this by eating beef

~B Vitamins: These work with folic acid in many body processes including synthesis of DNA, red blood cells and the insulation sheath (the myelin sheath) that surrounds nerve cells and facilitates the conduction of signals in the nervous system.

~Ginseng: A well-known adaptogenic herb which increase the body's resistance to stress, trauma, anxiety and fatigue.

~Ginkgo Biloba: Ginkgo may be the single most important plant medicine we have because it alleviates such a wide variety of problems. Ginkgo dramatically improves blood flow to both the brain and peripheral parts of the body.

~L-Carnitine: An important amino acid for muscle tone and strength.

~Sugars: Refined Sugar has absolutely no nutritional value whatsoever. Not only does it totally lack nutrients, but when you eat sugar it actually robs your body of nutrients-- vitamins, minerals and even enzymes.

~Antioxidants: Over the years, antioxidants have become synonymous with good health. They are a class of compounds thought to prevent certain types of chemical damage caused by an excess of free radicals, charged molecules that are generated by a variety of sources including pesticides, smoking, and exhaust fumes. Some scientists believe that destroying free radicals may help fight cancer, heart disease, and stroke.

So, energy drinks have a lot of good stuff in it, but the caffeine and sugar basically cancel out the health benefits. Yes it will boost your energy, but at what cost?

What are some negative health effects of Red Bull or other energy drinks?
What are some negative health effects of binge drinking Red Bull while a physical activity. Suppose a person goes snowboarding for a weekend and drinks about 5 a day. What are some short term and long term side effects of the drink. Are there any health effects concerning fertility in a man.?

    • ANSWER:
A common concern regarding the beverage is its supposedly high caffeine level. Proponents of the beverage counter critics by stating that a serving has roughly the same amount of caffeine as that found in a cup of coffee.

In 2007, a study conducted by American researchers concluded that Red Bull, along with other popular energy drinks, could boost both blood pressure and heart rates, prompting them to warn those with heart disease to avoid the drinks due to the possibility it could reduce the effectiveness of their medications. The increases, however, did not cause dangerous levels in healthy people. The various measures of heart rate all rose between 5-10 percent during the 1 week trial. Key similarities between Red Bull and the other energy drinks named make the study relevant to the ongoing discussion of Red Bull.

What are the effects of drinking an energy drink before athletic activity?
I am doing a project for my college class and it would really help me out a lot if you could tell me how energy drink effect your performance. It would even be better if you would time yourself doing some sort of activity before you have an energy drink and after. Thanks so much

    • ANSWER:
That depends on what you call an Energy drink.

Something like Gatorade is intended to quickly hydrate you, and does so because the 7% carbohydrate solution passes through the intestinal wall faster than plain water. Gatorade does a lot of testing and research (using amateur athletes like me....). See link below for data

If you're talking about something like Red Bull, that's a bad idea. I made the mistake of having a Red Bull once before an off-road triathlon. I had heart palpitations through the swim and the first couple miles of the bike before I wore off whatever was in it. Needless to say it hurt performance because I was afraid to go hard before my heart rate settled down.
