Energy Drink Addiction

Coffee is one of the most, if not THE most popular beverage in the United States.

The National Coffee Association conducted a study in 2007 concluding that 75% of adult Americans drink coffee - daily.

But a growing number of people starts to question their own habits of drinking coffee and people start to wonder if it is actually good for their body to drink so much coffee.

Yes, there are studies that suggest that coffee (rather: caffeine) can lower your risk of diabetes or Parkinson's disease for example.

But what starts to matter more and more is how people feel if they drink a lot of coffee.

Many people report high blood pressure, a feeling of anxiety or attacks of sweating.

The most common problem that regular coffee drinkers suffer from is sleeplessness, in heavy cases even insomnia (insomnia is chronic lack of sleep).

That's why more and more people are looking for ways to replace their coffee - while still consuming a bit of caffeine.

After all - coffee contains the most caffeine of any available drink, containing about 70-120mg for a normal cup of filtered caffeinated coffee.

And if you try to get your body off of Caffeine too fast, you will have to deal with withdrawal symptoms - such as sleep attacks or headaches.

The best way is to replace caffeine by some other less-caffeine-containing beverage and reduce your dosis over time so eventually you can replace it totally by healthier habits like breathing/yoga exercises for example.

Good replacementes for coffee are: - Black tea - Decaffeinated coffee (note: it still contains caffeine but only about 1-3 mg) - Instant coffee (still lots of caffeine but much less than normal filter coffee) - Green tea

Tea is probably the best replacement for coffee in the short term. You simply drink another beverage that contains less caffeine.

Plus you have the advantage that caffeine in tea takes longer to be absorbed by the body -therefore it's mood-lifting effect lasts longer and better.

Eventually you might consider some drastic replacements for your old habit of drinking coffee.

Such as for instance: Yoga exercises.

When you would usually go for a cup of coffee to get "energized" and more awake, you could do some simple yoga and stretching exercises instead, and actually both energize and relax your body.

There is no doubt that regular yoga exercises are much better to your energy and overall health than the habitual drinking of coffee.

The idea to reduce your caffeine intake will be one of the best decisions you'll ever make in your life.

You'll soon have more energy, be more focused, be able to think much clearer and sleep much better!

  6. QUESTION:
    I have an energy drink addiction.?
    I used to just enjoy them, now I need to have one every other day.
    Now, I've realized that I'm addicted.
    I had my last energy drink 4ish days ago.
    And now I REALLY want one.
    1. How can I motivate myself to stop being addicted?
    2. How long until I won't be addicted anymore?

    • ANSWER:
      1. How can I motivate myself to stop being addicted?
      Eliminate all caffeine, chocolate, sodas, coffee, etc.

      Keep drinking the caffeine-free version of your favorite soda so you won't feel completely deprived.

      Stay busy. Exercise, or do other activities that keep your mind off energy drinks.

      In addition to exercise, you must also sleep well and eat a balanced diet. This is the natural way of maintaing energy and it should be the only way. Once you can do this, you won't want energy drinks because you will already feel great.

      2. How long until I won't be addicted anymore?
      It just depends, it might be couple weeks, or it might take a month or longer. The important thing to remember is that addiction to anything is never completely gone. Energy drink machines are everywhere, your friends will drink them, and you could easily start drinking them again at any time. The will power you need to stop drinking them can only come from you. You have to be in control of yourself, and you can do this if you really want it.

  7. QUESTION:

They taste good and that's all that matters to me.. I've drank 1100 MG of caffine in the last 2 days but I will go back for more tomorow and the next day.. I know it's my bodie and all but if my friends care so much to tell me to stop over and over should I listen somewhat to them? like I mean they REAALLLYY care. I don't want to worry them but I also don't care at the same time.. Or our they just sticking their noses where they shouldn't?

I have probably spent a few thousand on them. I used to buy 16 at a time, the max I could fit in my backpack. And now everytime I see a can in stores or an empty one lying around in my room I get so sad I want to cry. I had actually had heart arrythmias a few times from overdosing. 10. QUESTION:
    Energy Drink/Caffiene Addiction Problem?
    Well hello guys, my name is Drew. Ever since I was a kid, I have been drinking Dr. Pepper, coca cola, stuff like that. Well, maybe 3 years ago or so I found energy drinks. I have loved them ever since. I had gotten so badly addicted to caffeine that at the first instance of a caffeine headache, I would pop some Excedrin migraine pills (contains caffeine) and drink a coke. I remember one time I got this energy drink named Wired X. It was an orange can and it says on it that it contains 505 mg of caffeine, so i decided to drink the whole thing and that didn't go so well, i got super jittery, it wasn't a comfortable caffeine buzz at all.

    Anyways, I have just pretty much figured out that it is very hard for me to give up on caffeine. I know that energy drinks, soda's, and other drinks are pretty bad for my health. I have tried quitting, It's just really hard. I definitely don't think I'm going to let myself smoke a cigarette now, that wouldn't end so well. When I drink caffeine I have much more energy, and I feel so happy. My viewpoint of the world changes. Instead of looking at all the negative things in life, when I have a Monster in my hand I can see the positive things in the world, and I realize that compared to the positives, the negatives are so small. If i'm in my room by myself I will sometimes drink a monster and just dance away to techno music. I suck at dancing.

    How can I stop my addiction? Is there any mindset I need to have? I get headaches, really tired, no motivation at all, and depressed when I stop drinking caffeine =( Help me I'm a suffering addict.

    • ANSWER:
      Try and ratchet down your intake. For instance, if you normally drink 5 monsters a day, take it down to four monsters a day for a week. The next week take it down to 3 a day etc. That way your body can adjust to having less caffeine and then you can slowly ween yourself off of it. In addition you should start exercising more because that releases feel-good endorphins into the body and this can help you stay positive and give you more energy. Eventually you won't need caffeine at all!

  11. QUESTION:
    Which energy drink do you swear by?
    According to the FDA, They're not going to kill you. But many of these increasingly popular drinks contain significant amounts of caffeine, which can make you jittery and cause insomnia, as well as loads of sugar, which nobody needs. Worse, these drinks are often marketed to kids and teenagers, many of whom already struggle with their weight and don't need to add a caffeine addiction. "Energy drinks are rip-offs," said Bruce Silverglade , legal director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a Washington, D.C.-based consumer watchdog group that has been trying, unsuccessfully, to get the US Food and Drug Administration to force manufacturers to list the amount of caffeine on product labels.

    I drink Vault!

    • ANSWER:
      MONSTER!!

      yumm

      I like vault too!!!!

  12. QUESTION:
    How can i over come an addiction to energy drinks?
    I don't know why but i can't stop drinking them.. I drink 3 plus of the mega size everyday. People keep telling me to just stop buying them and your problems solved.. which isn't the case. I don't drink them for the sugar rush anymore.. now its more along the lines of being addicted to ciggerettes. Ciggerette addicts don't smoke ciggerettes everyday to get a good feeling instead smoking a ciggerette makes your feel normal.. the same goes for me with energy drinks

    • ANSWER:
      Substitution. Quit cold turkey at that level and while you'll look macho, you'll feel like you have the flu. What you need to do is ratchet down your intake. My idea is to start by making one of those mega sizes a regular size. Then in a day or two the regular size becomes a bottle of water or a soda if you're having real trouble. Once you're comfortable downsize the second mega-size and so on. If it takes more than two weeks you're going too slowly. Get down to one regular-size a day and both your wallet and your body will thank you.

      And next time you need a little more energy, drink tea.

    is one energy drink a day bad for you?
    I'm wondering if i drink one energy drink a day if it will have negative effects to my overall health. I maintain a healthy diet and i workout to keep in shape. I just have an addiction to collection energy drinks, i have almost 200 different can. So i am just seeing if one drink a day will be harmful to me, i also drink a lot of water.

  16. QUESTION:
    Will I get diabetes if I drink this many energy drinks?
    I drink 1-2 energy drinks (Monster Energy or Red Bull) every day. Each 16 oz can has 54g of sugar. I can't go 1 day without drinking one. How could I cut the addiction of drinking them?

    • ANSWER:
      See if you can find a diet version of the drinks and if not look for budget brand drinks with sugar reductions 'light'. Where I live we have a budget energy drink brand called OK.- and it comes in a 'light' version. If you find that you'll be better off, but honestly 2 energy drinks a day is not good. In the long run because your heart is made to pump faster when you drink energy drinks they can lead to heart problems as your heart wears out. Bottom line you need to cut down on sugar! It is possible to induce diabetes by eating to much white bread from the small amount of sugar being consumed everyday, so consider the increase in risk when you're drinking energy drinks everyday.
      Hope this helps!

    Does anyone else have an "addiction" to energy drinks?
    For the last several years now I have been drinking an average of 4 Rockstar Energy Drinks a day. I have tried to stop or even just cut back on drinking them, but as strange as it sounds its become almost like an addiction! Buying them is an impulse, if I go to the store or stop at a gas station I automatically buy 4 since I am there! I know it sounds crazy, but how is something like this treated?

    • ANSWER:
      I'd recomend counting up how much sugar and caffeine you consume each day, then gradually cut back. Drink water or juice instead of one can for a week, then cut down to two cans a day, then one, then none at all. Replace all those calories with healthy snacks and you'll feel much better.

    • ANSWER:
      I had to ween myself off caffeine and it's hard. It'll take about 3 or 4 days before you feel better, but the best way to do it is cut you intake in half the first day then down to a quarter the next and the 3rd day depending on how you feel you can leave it a a quarter or to what you would consider your normal intake. Side effects are that you are going to be tired, have a headache, and be moody, but there is no way to avoid the withdrawal symptoms.

HElp please. i also find it hard to refuse, the temptations are big, as my friends who i love do not want to break their "fun addiction."

      Yup this can lead to problems for you down the road. I know a man who has gotten kidney stones twice from drinking energy drinks and he is now on his third set. He just won't give them up. If you want to slow down on them try drinking only half a can for awhile and then maybe one every other day and so on till you can cut them out completely. Also energy drinks are usefull sometimes so if you want a healthy energy drink there are links to many good ones at http://www.voernix.com/2008/07/frs.html. I think they even have a few free trials.

  23. QUESTION:
    how do i break my addiction to energy drinks?

    • ANSWER:
      Energy drinks are high in caffeine, that's what makes them addictive and 'energizing.' The energy is probably just the caffeine, which is a stimulant. Gradual withdrawal is the answer. Begin to cut down your drinks slowly, Keep a pocket calender handy & jot down how much you drink. You may want to start writing down the time you begin drinking them & slowly wean yourself off of them. It takes 3 days for caffeine to leave your system I believe. Gradual withdrawal will prevent you from getting a bad headache & nausea. Good luck.

  24. QUESTION:
    Addiction to Energy Drinks?
    About 3 months ago I bought an energy drink (which before I usually never drank) and found that I loved the feeling, so I bought more.

    Long story short, I've become addicted. It's the ONLY thing I drink now. I wake up and my first thought is to grab a can out of the fridge. If I see I've run out. I immediately run to the store and stock up.

    At first drinking it just made me feel good, energized, like I could conquer the world. But now I feel dependent on them, like I can't function properly with out having about 4 a day.

    Is there an ingredient in energy drinks that can cause someone to become addicted to them?
    On particularly high stress level days...I probably down 8-10 just to keep going.

    • ANSWER:
      Sorry about your addiction. :( This can lead to problems for you down the road. I know a man who has gotten kidney stones twice from drinking energy drinks and he is now on his third set. He just won't give them up. Caffeine is hard to quit but it's possible. You should first start to write down your reasons for quitting, such as:

      * Increasing hypertension risks
      * keeps the liver busy from filtering other toxins
      * tooth decay
      * weakened bones
      * addiction/dependence
      * causes anxiety
      * a cycle of hyperactivity and/or inability to focus, followed by a subsequent "crash"
      * disrupted sleep habits
      * may interfere with weight loss and has been linked to hypoglycemia
      * buying coffee products may fund inhumane labor overseas
      * financial costs to support caffeine purchases
      * has been linked to affecting learning behavior (unkown if positive or negative yet)
      * caffeine dehydrates your body
      * a desire for a healthier pregnancy
      * decreased libido or sexual performance

      Put this list somewhere that you can see it regularly, like on your mirror or work desk (or both). It will help keep you motivated.

      Believe that it is possible to overcome your addiction. Accept that the process will take as much time as it takes. Realize that quitting will require a significant effort on your part. Erase any idea in your mind that quitting caffeine will be easy, or else you'll be in for a big surprise. Expect it to be one of the most difficult things in the world, and you'll be ready to give it your greatest effort.

      Prepare for the withdrawal symptoms, which can begin within hours of your last caffeine fix, and may last for up to two weeks:

      * headache
      * fatigue
      * difficulty concentrating
      * poor motor skills
      * flu-like symptoms

      Introduce green tea into your routine. Green tea contains mild traces of caffeine - not nearly enough to create any kind of addiction like regular tea or coffee - and this will soften the blow of any remaining foggy-headedness.

      Sit down and calculate how much time and money you actually spend on caffeine. Think of other things you could do with that time and money. Buy and read the newspaper? Pursue a hobby? Save money for an iPod? Start a trust fund for a child you love? Find something that's exciting and fulfilling, and think of it as your reward.

      Don't go at it alone. Find someone to quit with you. If you can't find that kind of support, promise to someone whom you love and respect that you will quit caffeine. Thus, consuming caffeine in any form will make you break your promise, and this will provide you with another incentive to stay on the wagon.

      Increase your consumption of water. This is especially important during the first few days as your body is adjusting. Adding a little lemon to your water makes it taste better and lemon is also good for your body.

      Reduce your intake gradually. You can set a schedule for yourself, such as "3 cups a day in the first week; 2 cups a day in the second week; 1 cup a day in third week; and none in the fourth week." Start replacing your caffeinated beverages with the decaf versions. Consider switching slowly to water as a substitute. Allocate your caffeine money in the beginning of the week, so that if you over-consume it in the beginning of the week, you will have nothing to fall back onto in the end of the week. If you allocate less and less caffeine money as you go on, you will gradually reduce your intake. Set aside one day - possibly a Sunday - when you are not on the go for a detox day. Make sure on the day you have chosen to detox you have no pressing commitments or tasks.

      Keep your "security blanket" close. You will need all the help you can get. Think in advance when your weakest moments are likely to be (i.e. in the morning, when you're driving by your favorite cafe, etc.) and turn to your "security blanket" to get you through these times. A security blanket is anything that comforts you and helps you take your mind off of caffeine, it could be a stuffed toy, a pocket video game, calling your best friend, doing a crossword puzzle. You can have as many security blankets as you need, just make sure you always have one close at hand.

      Allow lots of time for rest and recuperation. Keep your calendar empty for at least the first three weeks after giving up caffeine and give your body all the rest and healthy fresh fruits and vegetables that you can.

But in the long term most people get hooked on the enormous amount of caffeine they contain. But neither is really a cause of heart attacks. That person likely had other heart issues, and the drinks just made it worse.

I know there has been some controversy with the stuff some years back and some countries are not even allowed to sell it but if you drink a lot of these things is it really risky for you?

    • ANSWER:
      Yes, it can be risky. Caffeine is addictive, sounds like you are already there. Some caffeine is Ok for us, scientists now say that there are cancer fighting substances in coffee.
      But, caffeine + alcohol is dangerous to the system.
      Too much caffeine at one time is dangerous.

      People with known irregular heartbeats or other heart problems must limit or eliminate caffeine. It is thought that caffeine can also cause a condition called A-fib in which the heart beats fast and irregularly. During an episode, the heart can't circulate properly, it pools in the heart, thickens, moves, and can cause a stroke.

      And it is thought that kids that use caffeine are particularly susceptible to heart problems.
      And yes, too much caffeine can send a person to the emergency room.

      Caffeine can make a person jittery and nervous. It can interfere with sleep patterns. It can cause heart problems. Withdrawing from caffeine can be stressful on the person, and on the body.

      Really, it is time to kick the habit. And seriously, if some places forbid the sale of high caffeine drinks, should that not be a warning?
      Here is a list of the possible side effects of caffeine from Yahoo Health. This is in an article about caffeine pills, dosage one. They explain that one caffeine pill equals about one cup of coffee.

  37. QUESTION:
    I Drink a Red Bull every day. It's a addiction, it's my coffee. Am I an Harm?
    I just read a artical on yahoo about energy drinks.

    Most people have there coffee in the morning because they need to to get them going. I drink red bull during my first class of every day or else it's so hard to wake up and get my day going. If I forget to pack one it's like I feel deprived of it and I crave it.
    (not getting enough sleep, stressed out freshman in college)
    (I have the big like 48 packs in my dorm room)

    On the can it does say "improved performance and concentration" But everyone tells me that it's really bad for me, and it's true that sometimes if I drink one to fast my hands with shake a bit and on days I have had more then one I almost seem to get a high. In anyways does it improve my performance and concentration?

    I'm in shape I cheer, and it dosn't seem to be effecting my weight.

    should I be worried about drinking my daily red bull?

    • ANSWER:
      You're probably doing harm to your body. In a few years, I'm pretty sure Red Bulls, Monsters, and other energy drinks will be identified as cancer causing drink. Just remember too much of something is always bad for you. Always have a balance. of nutrients...

      Try this:
      "Energy drinks may give you a temporary energy boost. The "boost" typically comes from the large amount of sugar and caffeine these drinks contain.

      Although the various sugars used to sweeten energy drinks can briefly increase energy, consuming large quantities of sugar is likely to cause weight gain. Caffeine is a stimulant, which also can temporarily perk you up. But too much caffeine can cause adverse side effects, such as nervousness, irritability, increased heart rate and blood pressure, and insomnia.

      Energy drinks are not necessarily bad for you. But they shouldn't be seen as "natural" alternatives either. Some of the claims made by manufacturers of energy drinks — such as "improved performance and concentration" — can be misleading.

      Consider a better way to boost your energy: Get adequate sleep, exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet. These strategies not only will increase your energy in the short run, but also will help you maintain your overall physical and mental fitness in the long run." how long til I get a heart condition and it becomes a health concern? I drink 3 a day (The full sized rockstar cans, or bigger) It is honestly became an addiction I cannot beat. I have probably been drinking energy drinks consistantly for about a year now (I started with one here and there and moved up to 1 a day, then 2 a day, and now i drink 3 a day, which I know is incredibly unhealthy.)

    • ANSWER:
      Honestly I think you still have a long time b4 it would affect you. I'm addicted to sugar free red bull I drink at least 16-24 oz per day and I'm fine. People tell me I will die of a heart condition soon but I ask them if they drink coffee bc that's worse than an energy drink!! I'd try cutting back a little if you can but I definitely wouldn't stress over it!!!

  41. QUESTION:
    MVPS symptom causation and energy drink correlation?
    I drank energy drinks for a couple of years. I would have at least one sobe no fear every morning and maybe one in the afternoon or more. Suddenly during a period of stress (a difficult class) I began to get palpitations. My heart would begin racing over 100+ beats per min at rest!

    After a doctor visit and then a visit to the cardiologist I found out that I had Mitral Valve prolapse. While this is a condition defined by a floppy heart valve that can lead to mild to moderate regurgitation--it is also a nervous system disorder that is less commonly mentioned.

    Basically my sympathetic nervous system goes haywire all the time causing my heart to race as well as other symptoms from other systems controlled by the autonomic nervous system such as digestion etc. And no it is not considered an anxiety disorder.

    I just wondered if the two were related and if there had been any studies on the long term affects of drinking high amounts of caffeine and other stimulants, as well as high doses of vitamin B. It has always bugged me that my addiction to these drinks has given me a live long heart and nervous system disorder.

    • ANSWER:
      Heart palpitations can be caused by: Caffeine, nicotine, cocaine, diet pills.
      Mitral valve prolapse: Prognosis is excellent in the absence of significant regurgitation, but chordal rupture and endocarditis may occur.
      Mitral regurgitation: Prognosis depends on LV function and severity and duration of MR. Patients with mild, asymptomatic MR may be monitored, but progressive or symptomatic MR requires mitral valve repair or replacement.

  42. QUESTION:
    :::5 Hour Energy Drink:::?
    Is the 5 Hour Energy drink bad for a 15 year old to drink? Does it cause like an addiction? How about the taste? Does it really last 5 hours? Can a 15 year old buy it or does an older person have to buy it for you like a 13 year old wanting beer?

    • ANSWER:
      If you're 15 and you need the 5 Hour Enegry drink, then you should wonder why you need additional energy. Most 15 year olds should have energy themselves, as 16, 17, 18 and over 21+ years should have!
      Only snails use 5 Hour Energy.

  43. QUESTION:

  44. QUESTION:
    is it ok for mormons to drink energy drinks?
    mormons: what do you think about coke and energy drinks?
    i drink coke pretty regularly but hardly ever drink energy drinks...
    not that im asking for your permission lol, but do you think its ok to drink energy drinks on the odd occasion, as long as it doesnt become an addiction?

    while im at it i might aswell ask your opinion on clubbing (this goes out to christians too)?
    i dont drink, wear skimpy outfits or dirty dance... im just there to have fun with (and look after) my friends and shake my bootay in the most appropriate manner possible haha.. i dont think theres any harm in that.. what do you all think?

    • ANSWER:
      cokes are fine - energy drinks are fine....but as with everything we put into our bodies we ought to use some awareness and caution.
      clubbing - as long as you remember who you are might be ok ----BUT you are putting yourself in a situation where you could be @risk (even drinking a coke, somebody could slip something into your drink easily enough). things happen. personally I would say you'd be better off to avoid situations where people are drinking alot and losing their inhibitions to the point that they don't care alot. it just puts you in a possibly bad place.

  45. QUESTION:
    Why is my energy supply always so depleted?
    I used to not take care of my body, drank energy drinks, etc. in my junior and senior year, because of the need to stay up all night to do homework. In the past few months, I've been eating nothing but veggies and fruits, nutrition bars, bagels, and I drink tons of water and that minute maid body/mind nourishing stuff. I workout out regularly at the gym, and I go to sleep around 12am-1am and wake up around 9-10am. Yet, I never, ever feel energized, rejuvenated, etc. I can run a few miles on the track or treadmill, yet when I play baseball , my legs give out within a minute!!
    What is going on here? Is my diet lacking something? I mean, it's been about 2 years since my energy drink "addiction " and i've cleaned up my body so well! Any thoughts?

    • ANSWER:
      try and find something equivelant to your drinks, like..instead of everyday a shot, just replace for a fanta drink or something,obviously don't just randomly,you need to do it slowly, so say do this fanta thing once a week, then change to twice a day,ONLY when your ready,then do it for the other ones until you only drink energy drinks once a week or twice :P if that makes any sense...

      And if you give in,think about the sugar clogging up your arteries and then you would have to have surgery or have a heart attack!

  49. QUESTION:
    Any Energy Drink Experts Out There?
    I just want to know if they are really bad and whatnot. I believe they are. I think my girlfriend is getting hooked on them. I tried one and it felt like I just took a line of coke or a hit of meth, I have experienced both. I really think that they are unhealthy with all the caffiene and sugar and all the other stuff it got in there. Her preference is either Red Bull or 5-hr energy. Can anyone give me any solid info and details whether or not these are dangerous and can cause addiction or liver/kidney/any other organ problems/failure/cancer? she drinks at least one a day.
    Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
      well i dont know all the details, but it can be bad if it had too much mg of caffeine (80 mg should be your max.). i dont think you shouuld drink one everday because then your body will probably get addicted and im sure there could be medical problems...but my favorite is rockstars! (especially the juiced!!!)

  50. QUESTION:
    is it possible to be actually addicted to energy drinks?
    i don't know, but i've been drinking energy drinks consistantly for about a year, and whenever i don't have it, i get really sick- like massive head aches and vomiting. and when i don't have energy drinks, i feel depressed, and when i do have it i feel ecstatic. is this the equivalent to a drug addiction ?

    • ANSWER:
      Yes it is. I know from my own experience. I used to drink Monster and Red Bull like they were water. Big mistake, your body will get addicted to the caffeine and like you said you'll get headaches when you don't have it, grouchy, sick to your stomach all of that. I was so addicted to them I didn't know what to do with myself. It was hard, but I just stopped using those types of energy drinks. I slowly took less and less until my system was addicted to the caffeine any longer. Afterwards I was so afraid to use any type of energy drink. I didn't want to get addicted again, but I really do need a little extra boost from time to time. I found some good guides online for energy enhancement and actually found a new type of energy drink. I haven't gotten addicted to it and I feel great when I do need to take it. Its awesome. http://www.voernix.com/2008/07/frs.html is the site I found it on. I hope it helps you as much as it helped me.

      Good luck!
