Energy Drink Side Effects

Whether it's in form of a pill or liquid, energy boosters are here to stay.

Energy boosters have proven to increase mental alertness, physical competitiveness, treat symptoms of depression, treat anxiety, asthma and even cancer.

The majority of the energy boosting products work as a stimulant just like a cup of coffee would do, however, in greater ways.

Some of the most popular ones on the market right now can be found inside your regular supermarket. Since products like "Ciclon" and "Red Bull" have hit the market, many other products have been released with great success. Why ? Because the high pace of life demands it!

However, these energy drinks use caffeine and sugars to achieve the desired effect. The last thing that people need in their diets is more sugar. Furthermore, insomnia, nervousness and headache are commonly reported side effects from energy drink consumption.

A healthier alternative is to consume proven herbal energy boosters. These have no sugar and don't utilize caffeine. More importantly, they take a more holistic approach to your health. They also contain vitamins and amino acids which has beneficial affects on other parts of the body and to your mind.

Here are just a few of the herbal remedies you'll find in natural energy boosters:

Ginseng - known to be an adaptogen helps the body restore its health and works without harmful side effects. Not only that, it helps boost your energy, and is being used today for helping diabetic patients by lower blood sugar levels.

Gingko Biloba. This herb is wildly recognized for its brain boosting benefits. There have been 100's of studies on the benefits on gingko.

Just to name a few of the benefits, gingko biloba has the capacity to increase blood flow to the brain (thus helping the flow of air in and out), helps with infertility problems and most importantly increases metabolism efficiency! That alone is enough to get a product that contains gingko.

B Vitamins - These are a group of eight vitamins that are important in the breakdown of carbohydrates into glucose, which provides us energy and the breakdown of fats and proteins, which supports the workings of the nervous system.

Some natural energy supplements also contain nutrients that help to fight free radical damage. As you may well know, free radical damage is a major cause of aging and age-relate illnesses.

It just makes more sense to get natural energy supplements. They just don't just give you more gusto, they improve your health too.

  11. QUESTION:
Would are the side effects of drinking an energy drink every day?
Im not doing this. Im just curious :)
    like rockstar, monster, nos, etc....

    • ANSWER:
.Well if you drink an energy drink a day there won't be any side effects. One drink a day is well within moderation and won't have any adverse effects. The only catch is that Monster and Rockstar and many others are actually 2 or 3 drinks in a can. Only the small cans like the original Red Bull or better yet XS Energy are single servings. All of the makers recommend against having more than two in a day.

All problems with energy drinks can be narrowed down to over use or being dehydrated. However that is not what you will hear from the ignorant masses.

Yes, most energy drinks do have a lot of sugar and caffeine as well as other stimulants. However, sodas have as much if not more sugars. Coffee has more caffeine. So energy drinks are NOT any worse then those. However, with all of the combined stimulants in them more than 2 is simply much more than people need in a day.

The way they should work is that you get the initial rush from the sugars. Before that wears off and you have a sugar crash the caffeine and other stimulants should take over. However caffeine takes more water to process than the energy drink provides so it dehydrates us. When we are dehydrated we feel tired and caffeine no longer helps energize us. So if we don't drink 2 glasses of water with each serving then we feel tired when the sugar rush wears off. That is the big crash of energy drinks. If you are hydrated you will not notice the crash and should be energized for 4 - 6 hours.

Are there any longterm side effects from drinking energy drinks?
I drink at least one monster low carb energy drink a day and Im extremely active (triathlete) and was wondering if there are any known long term negative side effects to drinking energy drinks.

    • ANSWER:
I'm 46 and have been drinking caffeine since I was old enough to keep both ends off the ground. I used to drink 7-9 cans of Mountain Dew a day. Never bothered me UNTIL I hit 40. Then developed arrythmia, while I can't prove it's the caffeine. I'm one of nine kids and I'm the only one that has it, so it's not hereditary, and other than caffeine, I can't think of what would cause it.

One or so a day I wouldn't think would hurt, just try not to go over board, you might regret it later.

Could these be side effects of an energy drink?
I drank an enegry drink about 7 or 8 hours ago. It was a monster. Idk what kind. It wass orange and on the top it said "anti - gravity." But about ever since like 8pm I've had a hot itchy face. I get random chills and shake a lot. And my stomach hurts on and off. Could this be from the energy drink? Cause I am only 4'9"..
Since I'm so small I didn't know if that could do something with it..

    • ANSWER:
Well, there are a lot of things that could come into play here.

What do you weigh? Do you drink them often?

Have you eaten anything? What did you eat? How much?

Are you hydrated, with any water in your system?

A lot of things will effect how an energy drink is on your body. I don't know about the itchy face, but it sounds like you have a little too much caffeine in your system and not enough food substance. It used to happen to me a lot, but I used to drink 4-5 monsters a day and I only ate every 3 days. I do NOT advise it! Just try to eat a little something, drink so water, and lay down.

  23. QUESTION:
what are bad side effects from energy drinks?
my husband drinks energy drinks everyday and says that there is nothing wrong with it. i want to be able to give him reasons why he shouldn't drink them and what could happen. so please help.

    • ANSWER:
The effects of that much caffeine can be serious....it has been known to cause heart attacks and several companies have debated on whether to pull their 'energy' drinks from the shelves. Read up on caffeine. I don't use it. Even though it's legal, it's addictive and chemically related to such drugs as cocaine. It's an upper that constricts the veins in your brain and increases your heart rate. I'm not sure how much caffeine it would take to kill someone, but it's a lot of energy drinks. Mixing it with alcohol, a downer, makes the effects even worse for your body. The ingredient you are worried about with the energy drinks is the caffeine so look up as much as you can about it. Ulcers and intestinal problems are associated with the high use of caffeine or energy drinks.

  24. QUESTION:
What are the side effects of drink a Max 5 Hour Energy Drink? Read On...?
I'm a 14 year old girl at school I drank a Max 5 Hour Energy Drink for the first time and it made me really pumped up and my blood was pumping and I had an amazing adrenaline rush than my body started getting sore all over and my arm was throbbing. It is the next day and my arm feels like I banged into a store wall. Please tell me what's going on! :(

    • ANSWER:
It's simple and scientific. When your body is under the effect of adrenaline, a lot of ATP is used up so that respiration doesn't have to occur. However, you also don't breathe enough to cope with the rate of respiration and your body started undergoing anaerobic respiration and producing lactic acid. Your arm will hurt for about 3 days and then you'll forget about it. Remember, energy drinks are fun but they can be dangerous.

  25. QUESTION:
Where can I find significant results on the side effects or negative effects of Monster Energy drink?
It cannot be hearsay, I need actual scientific proof.

    • ANSWER:

    • ANSWER:
      genetic mutations!!!!

  27. QUESTION:
What are the side effects of the energy drink Monster?

    • ANSWER:
The effects don't bother everybody as we are all different. If you are accustomed to high amounts of sugar and caffeine then you won't notice it as much. Basically for those that do get affected they might get hyper, jittery, and their mind might race. Plus it is actually 2 servings in the small can and 3 in the larger one.

Basically if you are going to drink a Monster then you either need to really need the energy or drink only half, at most, at a time.

  28. QUESTION:
I would like to know if that 5 Hour energy drink works? and are there any side effects? Is it safe to use?
5 Hour Energy is that new energy shot that came out recently. It worked for me but I seen a review of some people that it didnt' go so well for. I just wanted to know at a whole, if its safe and what the side effects are.

    • ANSWER:
It's mostly made up of B vitamins which are water soluable and are absorbed into your body quickly.

If you can get past the taste, they do work pretty well by increasing the energy levels (with the Vitamin B), and there is a slight crash.

Start with 1/2 a bottle at first if you're worried about the affects. Likely, most of the affects are probably 'in your head'.

Anything that increases you energy levels artificially is proabably not the best for your body.

      Good luck!

  29. QUESTION:

Are there any side effects of getting totally wired on energy drinks?
Ok, so I chosen to be Abstinent to alchohol, but i've found that energy drinks sorta give me the same feeling. So i was wondering, are their any side effects of drinking a few energy drinks. Especially like any long term ones?
Yea Im not stupid. I would for sure not be drinking them everyday, But you know, they help me kind of loosen up. Just a couple now and then i just don't want to mess up my body for something stupid like that.

    • ANSWER:
These drinks tends to be high in sugar and caffeine. They can raise your blood pressure and heart rate very high. They are NOT soft drinks (although they are marketed as one).
Personally - I wouldn't recommend ANYONE under 15 years old to drink it - but of course you drank alcohol so you should old enough.

People have been know to be so hyped up on it that they do crazy things and lose control (One case I know of a young man drank more than 5 of these in one hit and totally lost control of his senses - took a car and drove at high speed ended up crashing into a wall - killed. Not making this up - it actually happened)
Your brain just can't handle that much caffeine. So careful of how much you drink per day.

Long term affect is possible kidney damage, heart failure, brain damage.

Like anything else - all things in moderation. I'd hate to see you in a hospital.

      Cheers

  33. QUESTION:
what are the side effects of energy drinks?
and which energy drink product is safe for health?

    • ANSWER:
well energy drinks are of course full of vitamin b,taurine, and cafine. those are the ones that effects you the most. too much vitamin b in a diet is unhealthy as it slows down the ability to absorb other things. Taurine is found naturally in our bodies and in some foods, such as seafood and meat. It is believed to play a role in muscle contraction and may detoxify and cleanse the body of harmful substances, though there are no definitive scientific studies confirming this, and cafine increases heart rate and blood pressure, and can cause dehydration and prevent sleep.

  39. QUESTION:
Is 5 hour energy drink harmful? Any side effects?

    energy drinks

    • ANSWER:
Ok heres the thing with this drink. Ive been reading all these claims that it works great and energy last forever. These are true for I have tried it myself. This is NOT something that should be taken more than once a week. With the extremely high amounts of vitamins in this supplement there could be a lot of damage done to the kidneys. All the vitamins in this supplement are water soluble which means those that are not absorbed are filtered through the kidneys and urinated out. After prolonged periods of use your kidneys could slowly work their way to damage or even renal failure. I read some reviews of people using this stuff 5 days a week, ask them how their blood pressure and kidney function is doing in 2 months. Otherwise i would say if you are taking this once in a while there is no problem at all but with all things in your diet, moderation is key.

what can you say about power/energy drink like that of Sobe sugarfree drink? Any side effects?

it says that it does not contain aspartame.
thanks for your answers. but what I meant was, health wise, what are the side effects? some say it is bad for the heart?

    • ANSWER:
As long as you are generally healthy and do not have any significant medical history, you should only experience mild, if any, side effects. You may experience some anxiety or "shaky" hands, but that depends on how sensitive your body is to the substances in those drinks. If you are new to these drinks, try half a serving to determine if you are hypersensitive to them.

If you have a medical history of heart disease, heart arrythmias, heart conduction problems, other heart problems, diabetes, mental disorders requiring medication, or seizures, though, I would strongly recommend against consuming any of these types of beverages. Also, if you do not have at least a basic level of physical fitness, do not consume these beverages prior to exercising, as unsafe elevations in heart rate and blood pressure may result.

All that being said, though, I reiterate that as long as you are generally healthy, you should have really no adverse side effects from these drinks.

  42. QUESTION:
Side effects of Monster Energy Drink or pregnancy symptoms..?
It's weird. Last time I got my period was around the end of June. I had unprotected sex for one whole month (july), and I was expecting my period this past week. The problem is that I drink 2 or sometimes 3 monsters a day to keep myself awake at work or school. Now I am confused. The energy drinks would keep me awake all the time, and I wouldn't get hungry either; now, I feel sleepy almost all day long, and I still get hungry even after I drink the Monster energy drinks. I've had this habit for about a year now, and this is the first time (last 2 weeks) that those energy drinks are not working for me anymore. I am not even trying to get pregnant because 2 yrs ago I tried and I never got, so I'm thinking that it will not happen anyway...

you REALLY need to kick the habit of energy drinks. seriously, immediately. its totally unhealthy. it kicks up your heart rate and could be fatal or give you diseases. also, the carbonation messed your teeth up. the chemicals in monster are totally unhealthy. the first alternative i suggest is water. many people think its so plain and stuff, but really, its the best there is for you and its calorie free and totally natural and keeps you hydrated. second is smoothies. main smoothie shops such as robeks and jamba juice offer free boosts, get an energy boost! and they are full of nutrients and very healthy. its possible that the man you are sleeping with could have a low sperm count or be sterile. and some people just can't procreate together. thats why they created test tube babies, they take eggs out of you, and sperm out of him, and then put them together and whichever egg starts growing the implant into you and then you have a baby!! so first, kick the monster habit. second, get checked out at the doctor. a few simple blood tests could find out the reason why you are reacting badly to the monsters. third, if theres nothing wrong with you and your blood, have your man get checked out to see if there is anything wrong with him and his sperm. anyways, best of luck to you! remember, monsters do not benifit your body at all, they just make you hyper unnaturally- not good.
      best of luck!!

  44. QUESTION:
Is there any side effects for the 5-hour energy drink? Answer only if you know for sure!?

will this stop me from sleeping, becoz i have college tmw, i wanna sleep by 12a.m. & its 6:27p.m. now....well i thought i will consume some of the drink and then workout for a while & then do some home work & then its going 2 be time to sleep. So yeah..

    • ANSWER:
THe 5 hour is better than red bull and other products like that. I wouldnt take it before bed. I would take it first thing in the morning. THe best thing to do is go work out and then do home work. You will probably get just as much energy from working out as you would from the drink.

  45. QUESTION:
Side effects from black mamba energy drink or caffeine withdrawls?
My 16 year old daughter drank a black mamba energy drink on Friday night. She experienced immediate hyperness. Obviously, she wasn't able to sleep very much that night. The next morning, she experienced a "freak out" session where she was very antzy and paranoid. Since then, she has had one episode of accelerated heart rate - around 120. She is also shaky at times as well as experiencing breast pain - commonly associated with too much caffeine.

Obviously, I do not approve of the consumption of energy drinks but like many things teens do - this was done away from the home. I have taken her off all caffeine since last friday and I think she may be experiencing caffeine withdrawls.

I am scheduling her for a doctors appointment for the beginning of next week. In the meantime, I was wondering if this sounded consistent with caffeine withdrawals or the side effects of the black mamba drink?

    Any advice would be helpful.

    • ANSWER:
Energy drinks caused the hyperness and possibly the antziness the next day due to lack of sleep, but the high dosage of cafeine and sugar although not good for her would not continue to cause the same thing unless shes still drinking them
remember cafeine is a drug and can be addictive
