In the last few years, a lot of debate has sparked about whether or not energy drinks make good workout drinks, and whether or not the so called sports drinks actually work. In this article, we'll try and take a good look at both - workout drinks and energy drinks - and weigh out the pros and cons of each drink type.
Sports drinks, also called rehydration drinks, are drinks that contain carbohydrate and salts to replace those lost in sweat during exercise. Their efficiency lies in the fact that an appropriate cocktail of carbohydrate, potassium, salt and sugar, together with electrolytes (electrically charged elements that ease hydration of the body) rehydrate the human body during exercise, better than water does. There are three types of rehydration drinks: Isotonic Fluid, Hypotonic Fluid, Hypertonic Fluid and they differ solely in the amounts of carbohydrate protein drinks, electrolytes and salts in them. These drinks are mainly taken during sports activities or shortly before them.
Energy drinks are drinks that contain high levels of caffeine and provide an energy boost, but, as caffeine (and other stimulants related to it, e.g. guarana on yerba mate) acts as a diuretic, dehydrating the human body, energy drinks are a no go for exercise. Energy drinks aren't workout drinks - caffeine isn't just addictive; it also dehydrates the human body, but even moderate dehydration (e.g. 1-2%) significantly reduces the overall muscle ability of the body, thus making your workout less effective.
Energy drinks also contain numerous vitamins that are thought to decrease the reaction time of the human brain. Caffeine typically sets in after two to three hours, so energy drinks are (if at all) taken an hour or two before the exercise. Caffeine acts as a stimulant and temporarily boosts your abilities--but do you really need that for workouts?
It is safe to say that sports drinks are far better for exercise than energy drinks, because sports drinks are lighter on the body; they have restorative functions; sports drinks work better on your well-being. While one might argue that an energy boost can improve the athlete's performance in competitions, there's little use to using energy drinks in sports that require a lot of energy, not to mention that all stimulants are banned from use in official competitions. Besides that, using energy drinks during longer activities like running a marathon can be plain dangerous because of the dehydration involved. Energy drinks, however, are by no means 'bad' - they are simply meant to be used at all-nighters and parties, not the gym.

QUESTION:
energy drinks!!!?
ok i have this friend and im trying to get him to stop drinking energy drinks!!!! can somebody give me some info/facts about what energy drinks do to you, so i can show it to him and maybe make him realize how bad they are?! thanks-
ANSWER:
Energy drinks may cause seizures in those who suffer from certain forms of epilepsy due to the "crash" following the energy high that occurs after consumption. France banned the popular energy drink Red Bull after the death of eighteen-year-old athlete Ross Cooney, who died after he played a basketball game after consuming four cans of the drink. The French Scientific Committee (J.D. Birkel) concluded that Red Bull has excessive amounts of caffeine.Denmark also banned Red Bull. Britain investigated the drink, but only issued a warning against its use by pregnant women.Consumption of large amounts of caffeine can be hazardous. Energy drinks contain caffeine ranging from 80 to 360 mgs per drink. According to a recent study, an adult can consume up to 400 mgs per day without adverse health effects, while children and women of reproductive age should limit their consumption of caffeine to 300 mg per day. QUESTION:
Is the caffeine in guarana listed in the caffeine information on energy drinks?
I'm doing some research on the dangers of energy drinks. I came across a fact that guarana, often found in energy drinks, is very high in caffeine. Apparently, guarana seeds contain more caffeine than coffee beans. Monster and Rockstar both have 160mg of caffeine per can. Just wondering, does that number include the caffeine found in guarana?-
ANSWER:
yes. guarana is a substance that has high levels of caffeine, but it is included in the caffeine content of the drink. I think guarana is about 20 percent caffeine, so 100 mg of guarana yields maybe 20 mg of caffeine.

QUESTION:
While dieting, are sugar free energy drinks significantly less destructive than regular?
I’ve heard in passing that despite being labeled as “diet”, and having 0 calories listed under the nutritional facts, diet sodas aren’t all that much better than regular sodas.
Does anyone know how valid this is, and what the evidence behind it is?
With that example out of the way, the main question:
Does the same thing apply to lightly carbonated, sugar free energy drinks as well? And should someone dieting avoid indulging?-
ANSWER:
Its bad for you mentally...because you get cocky about how that item doesn't count since it doesn't have calories but there are other things inside them that are bad for you and can ruin your diet. It is best to avoid all DIET drinks including all energy drinks. If you are looking for a boost. One a day makes a vitamin with energy. Green Bottle. You can look it up online on their website. Its a daily vitamin with a kick and your not taking in any calories or carbonation that will bloat your stomach.
Carbonated drinks can force you to go up one pant size just from the carbonation alone. Its like pumping your stomach full of air. After about two weeks of not drinking carbonated drinks all together....your stomach will flatten out.

QUESTION:
I've found out there is some REALLY BAD stuff in energy drinks so will you still drink them?
I have recently looked up all the fancy nutrition facts on the back of energy drink bottles and found some shocking evidence. People say eating too many BIg Macs can kill you, but you might as well drink an energy drink. McDonalds fries are really salty but the amount of salt in an energy drink is equal to about 5 large packages of fries from McD's!!!!! That is disgusting and I will never drink one again!!! And there is bull urine in energy drinks , taurine (www.reference.com) That is no myth it is a fact and I have looked it up!!!!!! So will you still drink them?-

no, never have. Did my research when they first came out. People are just sheep falling for the marketing hype.

I don't drink them for energy, I drink them because they taste good. They don't even get me hyped up. I've looked at the nutrition facts on the can, and one Monster only has ten calories and fourteen grams of sugar. It doesn't say how much caffeine is in it though.-
ANSWER:
Yes they're bad. Besides caffeine they have other crap like Taurine. And you don't even lack energy to begin with? So find something else that tastes good. Juice, gatorade (healthy compared to monster), chocolate milk.

QUESTION:
help any one i need to do a science fair project on monster energy drink! need facts!on it?-
ANSWER:
I don't know how successful a google search would be on "monster energy drink", and you probably won't get much from the manufacturer's web site (just a lot of sales/marketing stuff), but you can take a look.Get a hold of a can and then use the ingredient list to look up the ingredients that you are not sure of one by one (use google or another search engine). This should yield decent information on what goes into the drink.
Then, maybe you could take a more detailed look at some of the ingredients and outline how they effect the body when ingested. Of course, caffiene comes to mind as a major ingredient. But, some drinks have guarana and other more obscure "pick me ups" that would be interesting to learn about. When looking at "effects" on the body, you should highlight both the upswing and the downswing effects (how one feels 5 minutes after ingestion and then 1 hour later, etc.).
Do these ingredients deplete vitamins and minerals? Are there any health benefits? Detriments? What about all of the sugar? Artificial sweeteners? You can see where I am going here.
If your project concludes that energy drinks in general are not so good for us, you might want to research healthier alternatives, and present those, too.
(I even thought of a potential title for your project: Is Monster really a MONSTER?)
I hope that is enough to get your own creative juices flowing. Best of luck to you!

QUESTION:
Symptoms from 2 energy drinks and coffee within about a 20 hour period?
Ok so I do not usually drink energy drinks, in fact I have only drank 4 in my lifetime (more of a coffee person). I did not have much time to sleep between 12am and 7pm of the same day...so I decided against sleeping. I had one energy drink at around 12am, another the next day at around 1pm, and coffee earlier the same morning at around 6:30am ( I was helping to run an all day event). During most of the day I had trouble focusing, which did not bother me. Later on that day at around 4pm I started to feel not myself. It's hard to explain...I felt like an outsider looking in. My body felt foreign and I moved but felt distant. My friend tried to talk to me, I had to focus on only my friends face so I could hear what they were saying. Apparently I was mumbling which my friend later confirmed. I was also confused (later on at around 7), a simple task of helping to clean up a mess became complicated to me. I could not respond to answers properly and was only able to do simple task like wrapping wires without being overwhelmed. I knew how to do most things, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. I seriously considered finding a doctor but I had no idea how to explain my symptoms to someone else.I probably did a terrifically horrifying job at describing what occurred (apologies). It is probably not described correctly (but to the best of my abilities)
Were these symptoms caused by excess amounts of energy drinks and coffee? Are these symptoms anywhere near normal? I have never had/heard of side affects such as these before.
I do not usually drink energy drinks at all, and I possibly have a cup of coffee a day.

What are the actual effects of energy drinks?
I am a big fan of energy drinks, mainly Rockstar. But i have heard so many rumours about them, and other true things.
One of them being the fact that it increases your blood pressure (which it does) and does something to your heart salts?
One other thing is (This one is just stupid...) that it makes your "manhood" smaller if you drink too many of them, in other words, it effects your hormones?
Anyway, what are the effects of them? I know someone at school who drinks a V EVERYDAY.. he has one at school every time i see him. I have about 2 each weekend, maybe 1...

Most energy drink side effects are minor at first but eventually can lead to serious chronic disease in the near future. Side effects can range from: headaches, stomachaches, insomnia, dehydration, tremors, blood sugar spikes, energy crashes, increase of heart and breathing rate.Try drinking an EMV energy drink! QUESTION:
Are Monster Energy drinks really bad for you?
I've been drinking Monster a lot lately. I don't know why, I guess I like the taste, the sugar, and feeling perky for a little while. But my mom told me that they cause cancer and are really bad for you. I don't know if I believe her though.
Are Monsters really bad for you?
I'm not a big soda drinker at all, in fact I usually only drink water. I only drink Monsters once in a while you know? What do you think?
-
ANSWER:
If used as intended and in moderation they are not bad for you at all.Too many people drink too many and have problems. People here of these and assume that makes them bad. WRONG!
Red Bull recommends only 1 to 2 a day. The 2nd largest selling energy drink, which is also the 1st and largest healthy energy drink also recommends having only 1 a day and no more than 2. Monster is bigger so it is already 2 servings. So you should have only 1 can a day.
The worst thing is too much caffeine. The maximum safe amount of caffeine we should consume in a day is 300mg. Energy drinks have 80mg per serving. So a Monster will have 160mg which is just over half of the maximum amount.

Absolutely not. NO. NEVER. It's like drinking 20 cups of coffee all at once. It can cause all kinds of problems. When the caffeine wears off you crash and feel 10 times worse. Water, or flavoured water is much better for you.

QUESTION:
How exactly are monster energy drinks bad for you?
I've done research on all the vitamins they put in and all these vitamins seem essential for a healthy person.
Now besides the obvious fact that it's loaded with sugar, what is it in the drink that makes consuming it horrible for you?cite your sources and back up your reasons with proof and logical explaination.
ps. Who can prove that there's whale sperm in this drink too? cite that source for sure.

ANSWER:
1. Caffeine- Caffeine, especially artificially enhanced as well as purely synthetic, is bad for you in the large amounts it comes in one can of Original Monster drink. (Don't even get me started on the coffee and energy shot versions) Caffeine is a stimulant, and with all stimulants after the first buzz you "hit the wall" so to speak. But stimulants in the long term can result in depression, headaches, migraines, lethargy, all that good stuff. Caffeine will also sky rocket your blood pressure resulting in sleep apnea and other sleeping disorders, and chronic high blood pressure.
By the way a person shouldn’t have any caffeine per day but if you do have caffeine you should have no more than 200mg. There are 7400mg of caffeine in each can of Original Monster.2. Internal Clock- All this caffeine, will definitely screw with your body's internal clock. When your internal clock is confused, you get a higher metabolism which may cause you to lose weight. You may also receive an erratic sleeping schedule resulting in, again, sleeping disorders. Together this will result in a weakened immune system making you more susceptible to disease.
3. Sugar- So you said not to mention sugar, but this is important. There are 54g of sugar per can. Now a person should have no more than about 50g of artificial sugars (sugars not naturally found in fruits and vegetables) So you would not be allowed to have anymore artificial sugars that day. Which is quite difficult nowadays seeing as almost every store bought food has artificial sugars. All this sugar that you are eating, if the energy from it isn't spent exercising, will turn into fat. This added fat will, if sustained over time, raise your cholesterol significantly. This high cholesterol plus high blood pressure could lead to hypertension which in turn could result in a heart attack.
Now one can of Monster every once in a while won't do any significant damage. But if you have a can more than once a week (even that is pushing it) you are in for some trouble. Think of it like fast food. Every now and then isn't bad, but if you have monsters excessively any good vitamins would be outweighed by the cons of the caffeine and sugar.
Oh, and by the way there is no whale sperm. The added ingredient which is another hormone/energy booster is tourine, which is chemically similar to semen, but it is synthetically produced by humans. No whales involved.
