After drinking the various brands of energy drinks available on the market for the past 2 years, I had to write an article about my experience with the 2 top energy drinks that I have ever had. I used to drink Red bull for many years. Recently, I have been drinking XS Energyand I was able to compare & contrastboth brands.
In my opinion, Red Bull (the big name brand) & XS Energy (an amazingly fantastic brand not many may have heard of) are the best of in this category.
I enjoyed the XS brand more than Red Bull mostly for the nutritional content & effects it had on my performance during a typical day. The information here is what I obtained from the website of each brand. You can draw your own conclusion if you do the research as well.
XS Energy 12 oz. Cranberry-Grape
XS Energy 12 oz. Cranberry-Grape Blastboasts an array of B-vitamins, great taste, 0 grams of sugar, & can cost between $1.50 - $2.99 depending on the IBO you deal with (like myself), andis Kosher certified.
Red Bull Energy Drink
Red Bull has a decent taste, somewhat of a limited selection of flavors, a great amount of B-vitamins as well, can come in sugar-free (even though the sweeteners used amount to 10 calories, the sweeteners used include aspartame which I would not recommend), can vary in cost (if you shop around online you can probably find a good deal), & the caffeine in one can of Red Bull equals that of one cup of filtered coffee.
Overall
Overall, these 2 energy drink brands provide the necessary energy & vitamins needed to get the job done. I sway more toward the XS Energy side as it has the edge in nutritional content in my opinion as a certified personal trainer. Besides, I know that I can negotiate an amazing deal for the XS line of drinks. I liked this line so much that I started my own business selling this line of energy drinks along with other products. To me, it's the best-kept secret in the energy drink market!

QUESTION:
How bad are energy drinks for your health?

ANSWER:
An energy drink is a drink and it has benefits. I will educate you about how each chemical isn’t as “poisonous” it is painted up to be, but a fancy name for some things that are good for you.
Monster Ingredients
Carbonated Water- what it says it is, water with a little carbon dioxide gas in it to make it bubble
Sucrose- complex sugar, table sugar, you eat it all the time in many foods
Glucose- simple sugar, just not as complex as sucrose (it is a carbohydrate something you need to live)
Citric Acid- organic acid used in the metabolism of all living things
Natural Flavors- chemicals taken from plants to make you to have the impression of a certain flavor, used in almost all foods you eat
Taurine- absorbed through the blood barrier isn’t harmful in fact supplementation helps protect body from lead poisoning, prevents epileptic seizures, prevents obesity, helps prevent coronary heart disease and atherosclerosis
Sodium Citrate- an acidic salt that helps your blood platelets from sticking together, preventing strokes
Color Added- used in almost every food product sold, helps people associate colors to certain foods.
Panax Ginseng Root Extract- Is a muscle relaxant not tenser, helps treat type 2 diabetes, sexual dysfunction in men, helps increase resistance to stress on the body, anti inflammatory effects on humans,
L-Carnitine- required for the transport of lipids (fat cells) to the mitochondria for metabolic energy
Caffeine- comes from the leaves of plants even in chocolate, restores alertness for a limited time, helps treat apnea and correct irregular heartbeats, reduces the risk of liver injury for liver disease patients, consumed since the Stone Age
Ascorbic Acid- sugar acid with antioxidant properties, known more commonly as vitamin C, deficiency results in scurvy
Sorbic Acid- organic compound, prevents from mold, yeast, and fungi growing in foods so you don’t have to immediately consume everything you buy
Benzoic Acid- also helps prevent mold, yeast, and bacteria growth; apples even contain it, treats fungal skin diseases such as ringworm and athlete’s foot, also used as a decongestant
Niacinamide- known more commonly as vitamin B3, although serving the same function it doesn’t have the same toxic effects as niacin due to your metabolic conversion, it has anti-inflammatory effects, it has been proven to restore cognition in Alzheimer's disease patients, and it prevents immunosuppression due to UVA and UVB radiation
Sodium Chloride-more commonly known as table salt, needed by your body to absorb water for life processes
Glucuronolactone- broken down form of glucose, important component for the structure of almost all connective tissues in living organisms
Inositol- a different form of the carbohydrate molecule, necessary in insulin signal transduction, nerve guidance, intracellular calcium concentration control, cell membrane potential maintenance, serotonin activity modulation, breakdown of fats, reducing blood cholesterol, and gene expression
Guarana Seed Extract- contains caffeine just like coffee beans, has the same benefits as caffeine
Pyridoxine Hydrochloride- more commonly known as vitamin B6, is required in the production of serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine, helps in the balancing of sodium and potassium, red blood cell production, maintains cardiovascular health, lack of this chemical is linked to the cause of anemia, nerve damage, seizures, skin problems, and sores in the mouth
Sucralose- zero-calorie artificial sweetener so those who don’t like sucrose or glucose can still have sweet without the extra calories to make them fat
Riboflavin- more commonly known as vitamin B2, needed for maintenance in human and animal health, it has a key role in energy metabolism and metabolism of fats, ketone bodies, carbohydrates, and proteins, since the human body is constantly excreting it this means many humans can easily become deficient of this needed vitamin, deficiency leads to stunts of cell growth which includes the fatty degeneration of the liver and kidney
Maltodextrin- polysaccharide that is absorbed as glucose and is just as harmless as glucose
Cyanocobalamin-more commonly known as vitamin B12, it is used widely for people deficient due to gastric problems resulting in problems absorbing enough from normal meals throughout the normal day
As you can see all these chemicals are things you need. They are chemically stable and have no solid proven dangerous chemical reactions have ever been observed between each other or any other chemicals you absorb throughout the day.In moderation as everything should be used this is another drink you can enjoy every once in a while.
Other energy drink’s contents vary especially 5 hour energy, but with every chemical there can be adverse effect if you consume too much.
Long term effects vary from person to person because no one person metabolizes a chemical like another person.

QUESTION:
How do energy drinks affect your health?
Well, lately i've been drinking lots of energy drinks. It's hard for me not to have one, the temptation is too high to refuse. Just this afternoon I've had 5. My friends say i'm addicted to them and one or two are concerned for my health. I just wanted to know, how do these affect my health? What are the side affects if this behaviour continues?-
ANSWER:
energy drinks can lead to nausea, abnormal heart rates and emergency room visits. Energy drinks can make you take risks (apparently) and mixing it with alcohol can make you feel less drunk, when in fact you are still drunk. People that mix alcohol and energy drinks get drunk twice as often as people who don't.
Anyway, scientist have said that energy drinks can affect a growing brain and cause a decline in the immune system, although health authorities have said that they're safe.
It may change your behaviour or mood.

QUESTION:
Is it bad that I continue to drink energy drinks despite the health consequences?
I TRY to avoid them but I rather take the risk and feel alive then feel tired and foggy headed all day which is how I feel if I don't have one at college.I NEVER- would consume 1 if I already felt in a normal state, I only have them when I feel tired and actually need energy.
I bought a small coffee at my college today and it gave me enough pep for about 1 hour worth of class but after class I felt tired again.-
ANSWER:
There aren't health consequences from drinking energy drinks. If your interested read my rant about it here.http://crazedpress.blogspot.com/2011/03/amped-up-hands-off-my-favorite-beverage.html
Your question goes beyond energy safety of course, my first reaction is are you having caffeine withdrawal? People (like me) who drink caffeinated beverages daily tend to feel foggy and tired the next day before we have another. It is something you can wait out until the next day.
It is also possible that your body just isn't very energized because you may be too inactive, overweight or have poor sleep habits. The more we exert ourselves the more energy we get. Do you think this might be the case? If it is then you are medicating a larger problem.
A third possibility is you really don't care about your classes, which makes them boring and tiring. This is a great thing because it gives you the opportunity to find what really interests you. One of the weirdest parts of college is when you realize you aren't falling asleep in class because you found something your actually interested in.
Good luck figuring it out, don't worry about the health issues. Check out my blog post or send others to it if they disagree.

QUESTION:
Are energy drinks a potential hazard for my health?
I have to admit, i am addicted to energy drinks. I probably drink about two Monsters or Rockstars, and even maybe a coffee drink thrown into the mix on a daily basis. Is this a long-term health risk? Am i asking for trouble in the future if i keep it up? How much caffeine am I consuming and is it dangerous?-
ANSWER:
Yes. The ephedra is the number one no no. All those things that give you that fun little kick make your heart race... which can lead to heart problems in the future. Plus, look at the baseball players who dropped dead of a heart attack from drinking energy drinks, then playing sports. Poof! Dead. The 5 Hour Energy drink will give you similar results, but it's not as dangerous as those Rockstars. I mean, every once in a while is fine, but don't do it on a daily basis. You don't wanna drop dead, do you?
Then again, I drink one to two cups of coffee every single day. I've been doing that for 20 years and I haven't dropped dead yet.... Just be careful and pay attention to what your body tells you. Getting the "jitters" is a bad sign. So, if those energy drinks make you jittery, then you definitely need to cut WAY back.

QUESTION:
Are energy drinks good for your health or not?
I drink 1 coffee everyday but when I run late to school or work I drink energy drinks...anyone know about any energy drinks inparticular. I drink Tabb and Diet Rockstar.-
ANSWER:
I've heard & read they're not as well. Plus, I notice that some have a LOT of sodium, & too much sodium isn't good. I really don't understand why they're looked at as good tasty "alternative" sports drinks when the safest drink anyone should really drink after exerting a lot of energy is water. And, at the same time you can't drink TOO too much water (although you'd have to drink an obscene amount with no food for it to affect you). As usual, moderation... a couple a week can't hurt nearly as much as a couple a day.

QUESTION:
Are there health benifits to drinking energy drinks?
I usually have an energy drink everyday, these drinks include high concentrations of taurine, and b-complex vitamins. I have read some medical studies which suggest taurine and b-complex vitamins are quite beneficial. Additionally I was surprised that many of the larger energy drinks have less sugar and calories then a regular soft drink. I prefer the energy drinks such as Monster which is 50% juices.-
ANSWER:
They are only good if you are doing extreme work outs all the time. There is little benefits and more harmful for the average person to be drinking all the time. Many energy drinks are high in sodium and can cause a ton of health issues later in life.Hey, atleast you get the moster in you!

QUESTION:
Is monster energy drinks bad for ur health if you drink them all the time?
Every morning I drink an energy drink. Sometimes if I miss a day or two. I will get bad headaches. Then, I will also get some chest pain. But, that could be from something else. What do u think?-
ANSWER:
Yes! Stop drinking them so often! Sheesh. Listen. I used to drink soda every single day. I didn't skip a beat unless we ran out and I had to wait a day or two. It was awful. I kept breaking out, ran out of energy quicker. But the worst part of it was after almost a full year, I developed heart problems. Heart Palpitations and an Irregular heartbeat, in fact, which signaled a weak heart.Because. Of Soda.
I quit the soda drinking habit, and I'm pretty darn healthy, now.
Now, Energy Drinks are different from soda. They're much more -dangerous-. They have so many more ingredients packed in there, the symptoms can be much more severe. If you keep drinking them like you are the following will happen. WILL. Not maybe, will. For sure. Don't know when, but they will.
1- Heart Problems. Lord only knows what those drinks are doing to your intestinal system, it's only a matter of time before all of that adrenaline affects your heart and brain.
2- Kidney Stones. Know what those are? They're painful, that's what they are. Several cases have been documented about people who drink energy drinks developing kidney stones.
3- I can't say for certain, but I'd say those headaches and chest pains are related to your obsessive drinking of energy drinks.
It's okay to have one -once in a while-. Energy Drinks aren't made to be a daily thing, hon. They're made to be a once-in-a-while pick-me-up. A couple, meaning two, a week is a healthy amount, I'd say, but not one every day or every other day.

QUESTION:
Is 4 cans of energy drinks a day, good for your health?
my friend drinks 4 cans of energy drinks a day. What i want to know is how this can effect them health-wise short and long term. thanks-
ANSWER:
No. The sugar and caffeine in those drinks will mess with your body. It's insufficient energy that has short term affects. People who drink energy drinks have been known to have problems sleeping, indigestion, upset digestive systems, head aches, fatigue, and it also lowers your immune system. This can result in sickness, disease, forms of cancer, heart problems, and diabetes.
Energy drinks are just a quick fix for the rest that your body needs and deserves. Magnesium is a good energy suppliment. It helps with so many things for your body and it also won't give you that "crash" after the affects of the drink are gone.
The energy drinks won't kill you, themselves. But the insomnia and the lowering of your immune system can make you more likely to become ill.
If it's not natural, then it's not good for you. Tell your friend to take vitamins and magnesium for energy and to sleep regularly.

QUESTION:
Health and energy drinks?
My best friend drinks one of those Monster Energy drinks nearly every day, and I'm a little concerned. Are there any risks (now or in the future) that she should be worried about?-
ANSWER:
No.If used as intended and in moderation then there is no problems with it. Red Bull recommends only 1 to 2 a day. The 2nd largest selling, which is also the 1st and largest healthy energy drink, XS Energy, also suggests 1 and no more than 2 a day. The Monster can is bigger so it counts as two so if they are only having one of those then they are good.
Many people take too many and that is what causes problems. Then once the problems occur eveybody that don't actually know anything claim that energy drinks themselves are bad.
I will stop here to keep this post short. If you want more information about what can happen with too many then ask.

If you have at least 7 Monster Energy drinks per day, how bad is that for your health?
What are some serious side effects of the drink? How badly is your health going to be in the future if you continue this pattern on a regular basis? Are Monster Energy Drinks addicting?-
ANSWER:
It keeps your body in a constant fight or flight mode. You are totally destroying your adrenal glands and your nervous system is probably not happy. You probably can feel your heart trying to come out of your chest. I had a friend OD on energy drinks. There is a substance in them that depletes the potassium from your muscles causing you to have severe and debilitating cramps. He had a fun little outing to ther ER.....

QUESTION:
What are some negative health effects of Red Bull or other energy drinks?
What are some negative health effects of binge drinking Red Bull while a physical activity. Suppose a person goes snowboarding for a weekend and drinks about 5 a day. What are some short term and long term side effects of the drink. Are there any health effects concerning fertility in a man.?-
ANSWER:
A common concern regarding the beverage is its supposedly high caffeine level. Proponents of the beverage counter critics by stating that a serving has roughly the same amount of caffeine as that found in a cup of coffee. In 2007, a study conducted by American researchers concluded that Red Bull, along with other popular energy drinks, could boost both blood pressure and heart rates, prompting them to warn those with heart disease to avoid the drinks due to the possibility it could reduce the effectiveness of their medications. The increases, however, did not cause dangerous levels in healthy people. The various measures of heart rate all rose between 5-10 percent during the 1 week trial. Key similarities between Red Bull and the other energy drinks named make the study relevant to the ongoing discussion of Red Bull.

I sometimes live off of coffee and rockstar to get me going in the morning because I am really busy and get lots of homework. I will be up to 11:30 then wake up at 4:30. Is this really bad?-
ANSWER:
They just unnaturally mess with you're system. To force your body to do something through a substance isn't a good thing. Well i guess unless you're sick then meds are fine.It messes with you're heart rate and, for energy drinks, they have a lot of sugar so that's bad for you too.
But i do that too all the time. college life. extremely competitive. do whatever you can to compete and survive!

QUESTION:
do Energy drinks harm health if they are drunk everyday?
energy drinks like red bull, power horse... etc-
ANSWER:
ohhh how i dislike people that assume assume and assume!!everything in moderation!!
the first person said red bull was really bad for your health...but did they know that red bull has been around for almost 25 years. and the idea and most ingredients came from the Asian culture (those who have been known to live the healthiest lives and the longest) and it was in the testing labs for 4 years prior to it coming out so they could perfect everything about it; from the combination of ingredients to the size of the can. (and you wonder why everyone now has a small can like red bull)
another person said they became addicted and got the shakes....ummm maybe that girl is sensitive to certain ingredients or combination of ingredients...or maybe (again) that girl was drinking alot of them and not in moderation...plus she said jolt and cappuchinos . . 'nuff said.
ok ok i could go on and on nit picking. but seriously whatever energy drink you drink and you are concerned about what is in it and is it harmful to your health, look it up. look up the ingredients to red bull and what they are equal to that you can compare it with. the amount of caffeine=6ozs of coffee...sugars=simple sugars (found in bananas)...things like that/
p.s. i have consumed probably a bit over 2,500 cans of red bull in my life and i am completely healthy!
p.s.s. life seems so much better when you have the energy to do it!!

QUESTION:
Energy drinks and health?
Drinks such as Red Bull, Mother, V... How bad are they and how often and how bad does the situation need to be to have one?-
ANSWER:
Most energy drinks are nothing but suped up soda. Extra sugar and caffine. Some even have additional ingredients that cuase concerns such as taurine and gurana. How bad they are depends on the amounts and how much you consume. You should not have more than 2 energy drinks a day, even the healthy ones like XS Energy, Tab, 5 Hour Energy, and Stacker's 6 Hour Power.
Now how bad the situaiton needs to be to have one... Does that mean how bad do you need energy to use an energy drink? Well that depends on your water intake, diet, and each individual. Some people never seem to be able to get moving without an energy drink or a couple cups of coffe or soda. However, it really should not be that necessary to have to have one either.
I consume enough water each day. How much. Take your body weight and divide by two and that is how many ounces you need. Add 8 more ounce for each 20 minutes of exercise too. Getting enough water will increase your motabolism and energy by 3%. If you think you are tired drink 2 glasses of water and wait 15 minutes. If you aren't tired after that then you were just dehydrated. If you are still tired then you really are.
I also supplement to get enough nutrition. Enough nutrition will also boost your energy and motabolism levels too. Don't go by just the RDA/RDI amounts either. Those levels were set up by the government as the minimums amount needed to prevent certain nutritional deficency diseases. For optimal health you need much more of those and other supplements that are not even listed in the RDA/RDI.
I rarely need to have an energy drink. If I sleep less than 6 hours I will have one just to make sure I am able to get going in the morning. I also take one before a workout. In both cases I also drink water too. Even then I still only have healthy energy drinks.
I prefer XS Energy for the taste, health, and variety. They provide energy from B vitamins, and have 0 sugar, 0 carbs, and only 8 calories. They have 10 great flavors and 3 of those have caffeine free versions. Even the caffeine levels in the regular ones are not high amounts like regular energy drinks.

QUESTION:
Sober drinking? What's up with these energy drinks and hard liquor?
I work in a booze store. I get scared by peop;e who by cases of energy drinks and gallons of booze. They come in stumbling, but are very hyper. I see a trend in many people that is very scarey. They get absolutly drunk enough to not be coordinated, yet, they are so hyped up on energy drinks, fake health drinks, caffeine, and drink all over our roads. Not that this lifestyle has anything to do with it, but most of them have sickening peircings and permainent tatoos. Also, a recent scientigfic study showed a connection between new comebacks of many old viruses in a group of people who got multiple tatoos and many peircings. All those needles and holes in a body only ads to a great risk of getting infections, viruses, and more illness. Anyone agree? Are a lot of sober drinkers like time bombs in our world? Why do they comsume so much booze and think they can function normally using caffeinated energy drinks? They think very for "right now" and care less about tommorow. People are sick!-
ANSWER:
not sure if this is a question, or just a passing of judgment on your part. but lots of different types of people drink, i worked in a bar where construction workers would go in for their lunch breaks and get sloshed, then go back to work, so basically it's not a certain group of people that have no regard for other people and the dangers that they are imposing on themselves and others. and yes some people are sick, but not just certain groups of people, they're individually sick not based on lifestyle choices regarding appearances. but in response to your energy drinks and liquor question, that can be dangerous. it's mixing an upper with a downer and sometimes your body can't handle the combo. but i don't know about tattoos and piercing causing a resurgence of old viruses and illness. maybe if they're dirty places, but most places use sterile equipment, and new needles and such.

QUESTION:
Energy Drinks - A Natural Health Product?
It says on some Energy Drink cans that they are Natural Health Products, and yet if you drink to many of them they can kill you? This is a confusing thing because, yes there are natural health products ingredients, but it is known that energy drinks are not that good for you.
I was just wondering if they should even bother putting this on the can since it doesn't seem to be completely true. Thanks for your help
-
ANSWER:
It's well known that they can be dangerous. The FDA and several states have outlawed some of the products containing caffeine and alcohol. The problem is that there are so many different formulations containing many additives it's so it becomes difficult to determine what's dangerous and how much.In the end it's up to the individual to decide whether they want to take the risk. The world got along just fine before energy drinks came along.
