  4. QUESTION:
    coffee flavor?
Ive been seeing more and more health articles talking about the benefits of drinking coffee.Personally I've never been big on energy drinks or highly caffeinated drinks for that matter, but now I'm a little more excepting of it.so my question what is a healthy choice when it comes to coffee?(And I'm not talking about frappuccinos)
I don't drink soda or high sugar fruit drinks.
Black. In general, the more ingredients you add -- sugar, milk, chocolate -- the less healthy your java, says Peter R. Martin, M.D., director of Vanderbilt University's Institute for Coffee Studies. But recent studies have revealed that black coffee can help you fight off Alzheimer's disease, colon cancer, depression, and even type-2 diabetes. Your best bet is filtered black coffee (as opposed to unfiltered brews like espresso), since filtering may take away some of the fats that have been shown to raise cholesterol. And the caffeine? Despite the bad rap, it may be the reason that coffee lowers Parkinson's disease risk.

    • ANSWER:
The healthiest choice is to just drink it black. If you need something in it, just try a splash of milk or soy milk. Use pure cane sugar if you like it sweet, or even honey. Don't use white refined sugar or any of those sweetened coffee creamers... they're full of chemicals.

  5. QUESTION:
What does "two implications of this article to the world are" mean?
Jennifer Christner, M.D., an adolescent medicine specialist at the University of Michigan Health System, says misuse of stimulants can lead to depression, irritability, stomachaches and headaches. Serious abuse of these drugs can lead to very dangerous side effects, including hypertension and stroke.

The performance pressures from end-of-semester exams and papers can take a toll on students, even leading them to turn to potentially harmful substances to keep them awake and alert.

Recent studies show that a growing number of high school and college students are turning to stimulants like ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) drugs and energy drinks to help them through their stress — particularly during exam time, says Jennifer Christner, M.D., an adolescent medicine specialist at the University of Michigan Health System.

“Studies have shown that anywhere from 5 to 35 percent of college students are misusing stimulants around stressful times with academics. There is also some evidence that high school students — anywhere from 8 to 10 percent — can misuse stimulants during these times,” she says.

Approximately 25 percent of high school and grade school children have been approached by friends to use their medication, Christner notes. This causes children to be more susceptible to misusing medications that are not prescribed to them, a decision that can be damaging to their health.

“It is never a good idea to use anyone else’s medication, whether it is a prescribed medication or over-the-counter,” she says. “Of course, if you have ADHD, then use your stimulant on a regular basis and not just when you really need it at crunch-time.”

Misuse of stimulants can lead to depression, irritability, stomachaches and headaches. Serious misuse or abuse of these drugs can lead to very serious side effects, including hypertension and stroke.

The growing popularity of energy drinks can also be harmful to a child’s health, Christner adds.

“There is harm when someone is taking more than one or two of these drinks a day,” she says. “The caffeine can lead to jitteriness, anxiety, increased heart rate and the more serious side effects of high blood pressure, hyperthermia and stroke.”

While Christner notes that drinking one energy drink during a demanding time is usually acceptable, there are ways that a person can maintain energy levels and avoid stimulants altogether. To help ease academic anxiety, she recommends that students do their work steadily, as opposed to saving it all for the last minute. She also suggests keeping up with regular exercise, eating a balanced diet and getting proper rest.

Concerned parents can also take steps toward preventing their children from overusing stimulants, Christner says. Parents can role play with their children and ask them what they would say and do if they were offered medications from their friends. Parents can also be conscientious during the time of their college-aged children’s exams simply by calling and asking if their son or daughter is doing okay.

Christner also advises family members to look out depression, irritability and other warning signs of stimulant abuse.

    • ANSWER:
To imply something, means to "suggest" something - without actually stating it.

So - I am guessing that sentence would mean:
that the author is reaching out to the world with two different outlooks/suggestions that were not stated flat out (although she may have "said it without actually saying it").

For example - I say to you "wow, you look a little out of sorts today"

You tell your friends that I implied that you looked like crap.

The Effects of Sleep Deprivation on Student

Parents and teachers always ask their children to get plenty of sleep at a young age. Most common children ignore the adult’s remarks without thinking of the coming consequences. The children will realize the different in their body and mind as they grow older. Their memory will shorten and their body decreases in the amount of growth hormone. Causes of body and mind decay are commonly come from lack of sleep. Sleep deprivation on students will be fix when students changing some of their habits.

National Sleep Foundation recent study state, “63% of college students do not get enough sleep.” Sleep deprivation is a way of life for most students, especially during exam times. 15% percent of college students admit that they fall asleep in class. Students who studied hard all week and then stayed up all night partying on the weekend lost as much as 30% of what they had learned during the week. This is not a problem only seen in college students. Much of society suffers to some extent from sleep deprivation.

Most people that are attending College or University are suffering sleep deprivation. The causes of sleep deprivation in students are varies from school to work. Students who are attending schools are often working as well. With difficult class and longer hours of working students some times don’t get enough rest. For example students will go to class at 8:30 a.m. and finish at 3:00 p.m. in the afternoon, also an hour later they have to be at work. After work they will have to come home and work on their homework until late. The time in which student sleep can some spans from four to six-hours of sleep. The next day the student will have to repeat the same routine. With busy schedules students can’t get the required eight hours of sleep. This is mainly the cause of an early stage of sleep deprivation.

The cause of sleep deprived can come from drags. Drags can vary from caffeinated drinks to prescription drugs. Some of the commons caffeinated drinks include coffee, sodas or energy drinks. The problem of sleep deprived will be worsen when students consume caffeinated drinks before bad.

Drugs that’s student are currently taken to gain an edge against sleep deprivation is a prescription drugs intended to treat Attention Deficit Disorder. “Prescription drugs intended to treat Attention Deficit Disorder, including Ritalin and Adder all, which can have serious health consequences and should not be taken without a doctor’s consent,” (www.sleep-deprivation.com). Other drugs that college students may take that can affect sleep include: certain anti-depressants, diet pills, illegal drugs, including cocaine and methamphetamines, nicotine, oral contraceptives containing hormones, and steroids. These drugs has many side effects, some of the side effects include irregular sleeping cycles and irregular heartbeat.

Alcohol is also one of the drugs that affect sleep deprivation. After stressful classes students consume alcohol to relax before bed. The affect of alcohol is making students head feel drowsy, drinking it will reduce quality of sleep. Consuming alcohol before bed can lead to an increase in the number of time students wake up at night. These drugs may cause student’s body to stay awake, which reduce students quality of sleep.

According to Sarah Ledoux article, “sleep deprived test subjects have difficulties thinking of imaginative words or ideas. Instead, they tend to choose repetitious word or clichéd phrases.” She’s basically saying that people who suffer sleep deprivation will have trouble communicating with others. Other symptoms include: slurred speech, stuttering, speaking in unchanging tone, or speaking at a slower pace than normal. Lack of sleep can also cause student to not react to unpredictable changes in routine, lost one’s ability to be focus on several different tasks, and the speed and efficiency of the student’s action. Students who are suffering lack of sleep are unable to solve complex problems; even if they can the solution will not be original.

The worse case of sleep deprivation is when the body immune system is weakening, which eventually produce hallucinations and even death. When body’s immune system is weakening the white blood cells within the body also decreases in number and activity of the remaining white blood cells. As, the number and activity of white blood cells decreases the body also decreases the amount of growth hormone produced. When the amount of growth hormone decreases the body actually loses the ability to metabolize sugar declines, turning sugar into fat. One study stated that people who sleep less than four hours per night are three times more likely to die within the next six years. The longest a human has remained awake was eleven days. In the lab, rats that are continually deprived of sleep die within two to five weeks.

    • ANSWER:
      Sleep Deprivation in College Students

Much of society suffers to some extent from sleep deprivation. But ignoring the advice to "get plenty of sleep" has an exaggerated impact on the bodies and minds of college students. Faced with the famous dilemma: "Study, friends, sleep -- pick two," it is often "sleep" that students delete..

Sleep deprivation, especially during exam periods, is a way of life for students. A recent study by the National Sleep Foundation (JACOB, CITE THIS ARTICLE HERE,IN PARENTHESES BY NAMING THE PUBLISHER AND THE YEAR OF PUBLICATION, LIKE THIS (National Sleep Foundation, 2009) ) found that “63% of college students do not get enough sleep.” Fifteen percent of college students admitted that they fall asleep in class. Those students who studied hard all week, but who then stayed up all night partying on the weekend, forgot as much as 30% of what they had learned during the week. (JACOB, IF ALL THE FACTS STATED IN THIS PARAGRAPH CAME FROM THE SAME STUDY, THEN CITE THE ARTICLE HERE INSTEAD OF AFTER THE WORD "FOUNDATION" ABOVE.)

Most students attending college suffer from sleep deprivation. A leading cause is a daily schedule that is too crowded to permit eight hours of sleep a night. Besides their class loads, many college students hold down jobs as well. With difficult classes and long hours at work, students don’t get enough rest. For example, college students may start class at 8:30 and finish at 3:00 -- and then have to be at work an hour later. After work they stay up doing homework. Many students try to get by on as little as six hours of sleep a night, and some get only four. With busy schedules like these, students can’t get the required eight hours of sleep.

Besides a crowded schedule, another cause of inadequate rest is the unwise use of drugs. For example, caffeinated drinks such as coffee, soda, and energy drinks can cause excessive wakefulness. Consuming caffeinated drinks just before bedtime amplifies their deleterious effect on sleep.

Besides caffeine, students seeking to avoid sleep sometimes use prescription drugs intended to treat Attention Deficit Disorder. These include Ritalin and Adder all, (VERIFY SPELLING) which can have serious health consequences "and should not be taken without a doctor’s consent,” (www.sleep-deprivation.com). Other drugs college students may take that can affect sleep include certain anti-depressants, diet pills, illegal drugs (such as cocaine and methamphetamines), nicotine, oral contraceptives containing hormones, and steroids. These drugs have many side effects, including irregular sleep cycles.

Alcohol also impairs sleep. After stressful classes, students sometimes consume alcohol to relax before bed. While drinking alcohol causes a feeling of drowsiness, it also reduces the quality of sleep. In addition, consuming alcohol before bed can lead to an increase in the number of time students wake up at night.

The consequences of sleep deprivation hit students hard. The immune system is weakened by insufficient sleep. The number of white blood cells decreases, as does the activity of the remaining white blood cells. This may mean that students who are always tired are also liable to be sick more often than their well-rested classmates. Along with an impaired immune system, lack of sleep also causes a decrease in the level of growth hormone. When the level of growth hormone decreases, the body's ability to metabolize sugar declines, so sugars are turned into fat.

But a lack of sleep impacts the mind as well as the body. According to an article by Sarah Ledoux, (JACOB, CITE THIS ARTICLE HERE ) "Sleep deprived test subjects have difficulties thinking of imaginative words or ideas. Instead, they tend to choose repetitious word or clichéd phrases.” This may imply that students will be insufficiently creative to benefit from their courses. Lack of sleep can also cause students to be unable to react to unpredictable changes in routine, to lose their ability to focus on several different tasks, and to decrease the speed and efficiency of their actions. Students who are suffering from lack of sleep are unable to solve complex problems; and even if they can solve them, the solutions will not be original.

(JACOB, I THINK THAT YOU SHOULD END THIS ESSAY WITH A SHORT LIST OF BULLET POINTS OF THE THE CHANGES IN THEIR HABITS THAT STUDENTS SHOULD DO TO AVOID GETTING INSUFFICIENT SLEEP.)

SUGGESTED LEAD FOR THE FINAL PARAGRAPH:

Students can change their habits to avoid the consequences of insufficient sleep. Here are four (OR WHATEVER NUMBER) simple steps that students can take to ensure they get enough sleep:
      * Do not consume alcohol or caffeinated drinks before bedtime
      * Avoid the use of non-prescribed drugs
      * Do not use drugs for their effects on wakefulness
      * Arrange a daily schedule that allows for plenty of rest
      * etc etc

      Hope this helps,
      Ms. Worth

They did a study on this about 10 years ago or so and the government had to ban MSG out of baby food. Really excitotoxicins? As we should all know excitotoxins kill brain cells. They did a study on rats. Pretty much a long with any flavor enhancer. So stay away from Artificial Sweeteners, anything with Sucralose, etc. *cough cough* Life Water, Energy Drinks, Protein Shakes. By the way the so called government doesn't have to list MSG, at least what I've read. It sounds like they are almost trying to kill us with all these chemicals. What's your input? EATING FRUIT...

We all think eating fruits means just buying fruits, cutting it and just popping it into our mouths. It's not as easy as you think. It's important to know how and when to eat.

What is the correct way of eating fruits?

IT MEANS NOT EATING FRUITS AFTER YOUR MEALS! * FRUITS SHOULD BE EATEN ON AN EMPTY STOMACH.
If you eat fruit like that, it will play a major role to detoxify your system, supplying you with a great deal of energy for weight loss and other life activities.

FRUIT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FOOD. Let's say you eat two slices of bread and then a slice of fruit. The slice of fruit is ready to go straight through the stomach into the intestines, but it is prevented from doing so.

In the meantime the whole meal rots and ferments and turns to acid. The minute the fruit comes into contact with the food in the stomach and digestive juices, the entire mass of food begins to spoil....

So please eat your fruits on an empty stomach or before your meals! You have heard people complaining — every time I eat watermelon I burp, when I eat durian my stomach bloats up, when I eat a banana I feel like running to the toilet, etc — actually all this will not arise if you eat the fruit on an empty stomach. The fruit mixes with the putrefying other food and produces gas and hence you will bloat!

Graying hair, balding, nervous outburst, and dark circles under the eyes all these will NOT happen if you take fruits on an empty stomach.

There is no such thing as some fruits, like orange and lemon are acidic, because all fruits become alkaline in our body, according to Dr. Herbert Shelton who did research on this matter. If you have mastered the correct way of eating fruits, you have the Secret of beauty, longevity, health, energy, happiness and normal weight.

When you need to drink fruit juice - drink only fresh fruit juice, NOT from the cans. Don't even drink juice that has been heated up. Don't eat cooked fruits because you don't get the nutrients at all. You only get to taste. Cooking destroys all the vitamins.

But eating a whole fruit is better than drinking the juice. If you should drink the juice, drink it mouthful by mouthful slowly, because you must let it mix with your saliva before swallowing it. You can go on a 3-day fruit fast to cleanse your body. Just eat fruits and drink fruit juice throughout the 3 days and you will be surprised when your friends tell you how radiant you look!

KIWI: Tiny but mighty. This is a good source of potassium, magnesium, vitamin E & fiber. Its vitamin C content is twice that of an orange.

APPLE: An apple a day keeps the doctor away? Although an apple has a low vitamin C content, it has antioxidants & flavonoids which enhances the activity of vitamin C thereby helping to lower the risks of colon cancer, heart attack & stroke.

STRAWBERRY: Protective Fruit. Strawberries have the highest total antioxidant power among major fruits & protect the body from cancer-causing, blood vessel-clogging free radicals.

ORANGE : Sweetest medicine. Taking 2-4 oranges a day may help keep colds away, lower cholesterol, prevent & dissolve kidney stones as well as lessens the risk of colon cancer.

WATERMELON: Coolest thirst quencher. Composed of 92% water, it is also packed with a giant dose of glutathione, which helps boost our immune system. They are also a key source of lycopene — the cancer fighting oxidant. Other nutrients found in watermelon are vitamin C & Potassium.

GUAVA & PAPAYA: Top awards for vitamin C. They are the clear winners for their high vitamin C content.. Guava is also rich in fiber, which helps prevent constipation. Papaya is rich in carotene; this is good for your eyes.

Drinking Cold water after a meal = Cancer! Can u believe this?? For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you. It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion. Once this 'sludge' reacts with the acid, it will break down

    • ANSWER:
This sounds very suspicious. I do not disagree for a moment that fruit is very good stuff. However, much of the reasoning in this sounds a lot like pseudoscience and quackery.
      Examples:

"Drinking Cold water after a meal = Cancer! Can u believe this??"
No. Frankly I am cannot. The causes of cancer are very complex and to make such simplistic statements is nonsensical.

"Graying hair, balding, nervous outburst, and dark circles under the eyes all these will NOT happen if you take fruits on an empty stomach."
These are extremely large and general claims. Since they seem too good to be true, they probably are.

"If you have mastered the correct way of eating fruits, you have the Secret of beauty, longevity, health, energy, happiness and normal weight. "
As for the last point. Note also that claims like 'happiness' and 'health' are very vague and would be difficult to prove anyway.

"If you should drink the juice, drink it mouthful by mouthful slowly, because you must let it mix with your saliva before swallowing it."
Why should it need to mix with the saliva? Why would that help? Saliva breaks down starch into sugar. It also begins the process of breaking down fats. Most fruits have insignificant starch and fat content. So, what would saliva do to be so beneficial.

I must say that I tend to eat fruit before eating anything else anyway. Not because of all this nonsense. Just because, while I am getting the water boiling for macaroni, toasting bread etc, I eat it as a snack. Will doing so magically ward off cancer? I doubt it.

  12. QUESTION:
My German Shepherd has a weird nose problem that I can't find info on...please help?
We got our German Shepherd from a rescue foundation about 3 mo ago. She is the best mannered dog I have ever had. We took her for her vet checkup not to long after we got her and other then some sores on her paw pads and elbows(from the cement kennel she was in for a couple months prior) and a yeast infection in her LT ear(taken care of with a flush and antibiotics)..she was in perfect health. When we took her to the vet I did mention her nose was dry and a little scaly on the LT nostril. I asked her to look at it and the vet did and said it's nothing to be concerned about and to give her a Vitamin E with her food everyday. After a month or so it should be fine. So not being to concerned I did as she said and gave her the Vit E everyday and even cut a capsule and applied the liquid directly to her nose once or twice just to help directly instead of waiting for it to run through her system(which takes longer). This was almost a month ago and the only change I see is that it's actually getting worse...and today i notice a small growth. Here are her symtoms:

-Lt nostril only: Dry, cracked but looks more scaly(almost like when something shrivils a little due to lack of moisture)
-Rest of her nose is fine and healthy looking.
-She has a little mucus coming from that LT side but it's clear and just looks like a minor running nose.
-It does not hurt her and she does not seem to be bothered by it. She allows me to touch it and even apply Vit E without struggle in the slightest. (Like I said, she is a awesome and well mannered dog :)
-She is happy and full of energy, she still has an appitite and drinks normal amount of fluids daily
-Her urine and stools are normal
-Today I notice some hair on her nose thinking it was from her coat. That some just got stuck cause her nose is so wet. When I went to remove it(two of them) it stayed attached. I pulled harder thinking it just is stuck to mucus but still didnt come off. On closer inspection I saw a small off white spot on the front of that LT nostril and in the middle of it was where these hair like growths were attached. The hairs were about a half inch to an inch long. I pulled harder the next time and they came off, breaking off right before the base. This did not hurt my dog and she barley noticed I did anything really.

I called the vet and set up an appointment next week because money is tight right now and cant afford to take her in today. Im only concerned because everyday it just seems to look more and more shriveled on the top of her nose and that growth freaked me out a little too. I dont want to go into the vet and have her tell me something Ive already heard. Ive read many articles trying to find out if anyone has had similar problems and all i keep seeing is that the vet keeps telling people its no big deal and to just try this or that. Some have ended up being serious problems because it was diagnosed wrong or too late.

Does anyone have any idea what this might be? Has anyone known any dogs with similar problems? I can't find anything regarding the hair like growths ALONG with all her other symtoms.

  13. QUESTION:
Doesn't this make you just want to go out and buy some biodegradeable forks, knives and spoons?
After about a month in control of the House of Representatives, Republicans haven't managed to undo as many deeds of their Democratic predecessors as they'd like. They couldn't get rid of "Obamacare," and they haven't made much headway in slashing the president's -trillion budget. But the GOP has succeeded in short order in one critically important venture: getting rid of the "compostable" cornstarch-based knives, forks and spoons that were a universally — and bipartisanly — hated feature of the House cafeteria operation.

The tableware, the color of mucus and as bendable as a pocket watch in a Salvador Dali painting (and thus unable to pierce any foodstuff firmer than the innards of Brie cheese), was the most visible manifestation of recently deposed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's Green the Capitol initiative. That was her carbon-cutting effort to use the food-service and other House operations to fight global warming and a host of other perceived environmental, health and social ills. During the lunchtime rush, you could observe dozens of staffers struggling to stab lettuce leaves and poultry pieces with fork tines that appeared to be double-jointed as well as dull.

But on Jan. 25, Dan Lungren, the GOP congressman from the Sacramento area who now heads the House Administration Committee, directed the House chief administrative officer to trash — so to speak — the composting program, which converts the dining service's cornstarch tableware, along with its biodegradable plates, trays, cups and drinking straws, into garden mulch.

It turns out that the composting program not only cost the House an estimated 5,000 a year (according to the House inspector general) but actually increased energy consumption in the form of "additional energy for the pulping process and the increased hauling distance to the composting facility," according to a news release from Lungren.

As far as carbon emissions were concerned, Lungren concluded that the reduction was the "nominal ... equivalent to removing one car from the road each year." He plans to switch the House to an alternate waste-management system recommended by the Architect of the Capitol, in which dining-service trash would be incinerated and the heat energy captured.

  14. QUESTION:
Do you want to know about Healthy food in the Holy Month of Ramadhan?
    SOME HEALTH GUIDELINES FOR RAMADAN

This article provides useful advice on how to avoid some common problems encountered in Ramadan. If followed, it would enable one to fast comfortably and enjoy fully the spiritual benefits of Ramadan.

During the holy month of Ramadan, our diet should not differ very much from our normal diet and should be as simple as possible. The diet should be such that we maintain our normal weight, neither losing nor gaining.

However, if one is over-weight, Ramadan is an ideal time to normalize one's weight.

In view of the long hours of fasting, we should consume slow digesting foods including fiber containing-foods rather than fast-digesting foods.

Slow digesting foods last up to 8 hours, while fast-digesting foods last for
    only 3 to 4 hours.

    * Slow-digesting foods are foods that contain grains and seeds like barley, wheat, oats, millet, semolina, beans, lentils, whole meal flour, unpolished rice, etc. (called complex carbohydrates) .
    * Fast-burning foods are foods that contain sugar, white flour, etc. (called refined carbohydrates) .
    * Containing-containi ng foods are bran-containing foods, whole wheat, grains and seeds, vegetables like green beans, peas, sem (papry), marrow, mealiest, spinach, and other herbs like methie, the leaves of beetroot (iron-rich), fruit with skin, dried fruit especially dried apricots, figs and prunes, almonds, etc.
    * The foods eaten should be well balanced, containing foods from each food group, i.e. fruits, vegetables, meat/chicken/ fish, bread/cereals and dairy products.
    * Fried foods are unhealthy and should be limited. They cause indigestion, heartburn, and weight problems.

    AVOID

    * Fried and fatty foods.
    * Foods containing too much sugar.
    * Over-eating especially at sehri.
    * Too much tea at sehri. Tea makes you pass more urine taking with it valuable mineral salts that your body would need during the day.
    * Smoking cigarettes. Smoking and anything which is bad for health is Forbidden in Islaam, since Smoking is unhealthy and one should stop it completely. If you have this bad habit, it is good time to stop it now and for ever.

    EAT

    * Complex carbohydrates at sehri so that the food lasts longer making you
    less hungry.
    * Haleem is an excellent source of protein and is a slow-burning food.
    * Dates are excellent source of sugar, fiber, carbohydrates, potassium and
    magnesium.
    * Almonds are rich in protein and fiber with less fat.
    * Bananas are a good source of potassium, magnesium and carbohydrates.

    DRINK

    * As much water or fruit juices as possible between iftar and bedtime so
that your body may adjust fluid levels in time.

    CONSTIPATION

Constipation can cause piles (hemorrhoids) , fissures (painful cracks in anal canal) and indigestion with a bloated feeling.

Causes: Too much refined foods, too little water and not enough fiber in the diet.

Remedy: Avoid excessive refined foods, increase water intake, and use bran in baking, brown flour when making roti.

    INDIGESTION AND WIND

Causes: Over-eating. Too much fried and fatty foods, spicy foods, and foods that produce wind e.g. eggs, cabbage, lentils, carbonated drinks like Cola also produce gas.

Remedy: Do not over-eat; drink fruit juices or better still drink water.

Avoid fried foods; add ajmor to wind-producing foods.

    LETHARGY ('low blood pressure')

Excessive sweating, weakness, tiredness, lack of energy, dizziness, especially on getting up from sitting position, pale appearance and feeling faint are symptoms associated with "low blood pressure". This tends to occur towards the afternoon.

Causes: Too little fluid intake, decreased salt intake.

Remedy: Keep cool, increase fluid and salt intake.

Caution: Low blood pressure should be confirmed by taking a blood pressure reading when symptoms are present. Persons with high blood pressure may need their medication adjusted during Ramadan. They should consult their doctor.

    HEADACHE

Causes: Caffeine and tobacco-withdrawal, doing too much in one day, lack of sleep, hunger usually occur as the day goes by and worsens at the end of the day. When associated with "low blood pressure", the headache can be quite severe and can also cause nausea before Iftar.

Remedy: Cut down caffeine and tobacco slowly starting a week or two before Ramadan. Herbal and caffeine-free teas may be substituted. Reorganize your schedule during the Ramadan so as to have adequate sleep.

    LOW BLOOD SUGAR

Weakness, dizziness, tiredness, poor concentration, perspiring easily, feeling shaky (tremor), unable to perform physical activities, headache, palpitations are symptoms of low blood sugar.

Causes: in non-diabetics: Having too much sugar i.e. refined carbohydrates especially at suhur (sehri). The body produces too much insulin causing the blood glucose to drop.

Remedy: Eat something at sehri and limit sugar-c

  15. QUESTION:
What do you think of this article about Vampires?
    Watch out for Generation V

    Sydney Morning Herald

    Last updated 13:02 26/09/2010

Vampires - and not just the pretty kind featured on big and small screens - are seeking fresh blood.

So much so they have caught the eye of academics and social trend trackers, taking their research beyond the Twilight books and films and the television series True Blood and on to the internet.

Researchers say the internet has provided a church for disparate individuals and groups across the globe to meet and cement new spiritual belief systems around traditionally ''dark'' mythical forces such as vampires and werewolves.

The University of Western Sydney's Adam Possamai, author of Sociology of Religion for Generations X and Y, has plotted the rise of ''hyper-real'' religions drawing on popular culture.

''People are becoming inspired by the characteristics of the vampire and see them as a source of fulfilling their potential and inner abilities,'' Associate Professor Possamai said.

Researcher Danielle Kirby used the ''Otherkin'', who meet in an online forum and believe they are partially or entirely non-human, to examine the phenomenon. In her paper, she found about 800 members of the Otherkin network, including those who identified as dragons, elves, vampires, fairies and angels. The internet had helped concentrate their underlying broadly neo-pagan beliefs, she said.

The online and secretive nature of many self-described vampires - some who profess to drink blood, others who consume ''psychic energy'' - make it difficult to pin down numbers but believers say there could be 300 in Australia.

In an article in Australasian Policing last year, Queensland scholar David Keyworth listed contemporary examples of ''vampire'' crimes - a Welsh teenager who murdered an elderly woman whose heart was removed, a 1989 Brisbane riverbank throat-cutting involving the drinking of blood, and a Kentucky teenage vampire clan who cut each other to drink blood. There was even an unofficial psychiatric disorder called Renfield's Syndrome involving drinking blood for sexual pleasure.

Australian College of General Practitioners president Chris Mitchell warned yesterday vampiric pursuits were a health hazard due to ''the potential transmission of blood-borne diseases''.

Melbourne vampire Kriss Poison, 31, who stays on the right side of the law but not the bright side of life, drinks her husband's blood: ''When you love a person you can take from them, and they can take from me.'' She can't imagine being any other way: ''I've always lived on the dark side.''

    LOL @ "I've always lived on the dark side." Weirdo..... -___-;;

    • ANSWER:
Pretty ridiculous in all honesty. Some people have bought into this vampire craze so much that they really do believe in it. I bet Kriss Poison has every Twilight book and has all the DVD's. Well, guess what Kriss? Drinking your poor husbands blood still doesn't make you a vampire.

Some people just need to grow up, be happy to be alive, accept who they are and what reality is. Because it's all they'll ever have.

  16. QUESTION:
What do you all think 'bout Beyonce's maple syrup diet? Check out this article.?
    Maple Syrup Diet
Lose over a stone in just a fortnight! That’s the promise of the Maple Syrup Diet followed by pop star Beyonce. But is this diet really the best way to shift those excess pounds and will it work for everyone? WLR’s dietitian Juliette Kellow investigates...

    Maple Syrup Diet

    By WLR Dietitian
    Juliette Kellow BSc RD

This month, the papers have been full of reports about a new diet made famous by pop star Beyonce Knowles.

The ex-Destiny’s Child singer spilled the beans on how she slimmed down and lost 1½ stone in just two weeks for her new movie, Dreamgirls, due for release next January. Beyonce’s diet apparently consisted of eating nothing for a fortnight, instead surviving on detox drinks consisting of a syrup mixed with lemon juice, water and cayenne pepper!

The syrup – Madal Bal Natural Tree Syrup – is made from the sap of maple and palm trees. Also known as The Lemon Detox, the diet was introduced more than 30 years ago by naturopath Stanley Burroughs. Many of the claimed benefits include weight loss, cleansing the body of toxins, greater resistance to illness, improved concentration, increased energy, clearer skin and eyes, shinier hair and stronger nails.

The detox drink itself is made by mixing 2 tablespoons of the Natural Tree Syrup (which they say is 20ml) with 2 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice, a pinch of cayenne pepper or ginger and half a pint of hot or cold water. It’s recommended you drink as much as you like, but ideally six to nine glasses daily.

There are also four detox plans to choose from:

The Full Detox – this involves surviving solely on the detox drink for 10 days, although it’s recommended that beginners follow it for just 5–7 days. It can also be extended for up to 14 days, but should only be done so with the consent of a health professional.

Relaxed Version – this involves substituting breakfast, dinner or both these meals with 2–3 glasses of the detox drink. But you should still avoid sweets, processed foods, red meat, fried food, white bread, dairy products, coffee and booze for the remaining meals.

The Once a Week version – as the name suggests, you skip food and have the detox drinks on one day each week.

The Master Plan – a hardcore plan that involves a twice-yearly multi-day detox combined with detoxing once a week!
    WLR says:

Pop star Beyonce may have a figure that many of us envy, but it seems she believes in the ‘no pain, no gain’ mantra to get it that way. In fact, this is one of the most extreme diets ever and makes Carol Vorderman’s detox plans look like a positive food fest.

This diet is potentially dangerous. Effectively, it involves drinking nothing but sugared water for days on end. Of course you will lose weight, but that’s purely the result of limiting calories excessively.

A tablespoon (which they say is 10ml) of Natural Tree Syrup contains just 26 calories. That means if you have six drinks a day (each containing the recommended 2 tablespoons of syrup), your daily intake will be just 312 calories. Even nine drinks only provide 468 calories.

    The effects of crash diet

This low calorie diet plan will leave you hungry, irritable and lacking in energy as your blood sugar levels go on a roller coaster ride of highs and lows. And chances are, the pounds will go straight back on as soon as you ditch the diet.

But it’s not just the extremely low calorie content that’s worrying. These drinks are devoid of protein, fibre, vitamins, minerals and all the naturally occurring plant chemicals (Phytochemicals) we know help to keep us fit and healthy. After just a few days, it’s likely you’ll become constipated due to the complete lack of fibre in the diet. And if you follow this diet for any length of time, you could end up with low nutrient levels, including iron, calcium, zinc and vitamin C. Meanwhile, a combination of sugar and acid (from the lemon juice) is also a disaster for teeth and so may increase the risk of dental decay.

As for the idea that the body needs to detox, this is simply nonsense. Our bodies are cleverly designed to get rid of waste products and toxins – that’s one of the main functions of our liver and kidneys.

Worryingly though, these facts aren’t stopping people from buying this product. Even though it costs a massive £39.99 for a litre (enough for 5 to 7 days), the company that distribute Madal Bal Natural Tree Syrup say they’ve gone from selling 500 tins a year to around 2,000 a month!

    Crash Diet Versus Healthy Eating

Bottom line: this is a crash diet – and one of the worst! Put it to the back of your mind and concentrate on getting a bootylicious body by eating a healthy diet that will shift those pounds slowly – but keep them off for good.

  17. QUESTION:
    question about this diet?
I found an article on askmen.com that was how to get a Fight Club body like Brad Pitts in the movie. I think it gave good advice on what to eat...but it didn't elaborate too much. I'll copy and paste the food part and then ask my questions?

    "diet

    What to eat
Looking at Brad’s physique, it is obvious that he didn’t get that way eating burgers and fries. Stay away from dairy and fried foods, and processed foods like bleached white flour, soft drinks, pastries, and fruit juices. Instead, eat whole fruits -- like apples, grapefruits and oranges -- early in the day. Stick to grilled chicken breast or fish, eggs, whole grains like 7- or 12-grain bread, brown rice and lentils, whole-grain cereals like oatmeal, farina and cream of rice/wheat, and starches like yams and sweet potatoes. Your fats should be included in a few of your meals and should come from olive, canola or flaxseed oil, natural peanut butter, avocadoes, and fatty fish.

    How many calories you need
You should strive to eat a balanced diet and stay within your body’s Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), which is the amount of calories your body needs to perform its daily functions. At the end of the day, your progress will be determined by the energy (calories) you take in from food, minus the energy (calories) you expend through exercise.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you should strive to eat every two to three hours. When you go much longer than that without consuming a meal, your body goes into starvation mode and your metabolism slows or shuts down in an attempt to burn as little energy as possible to keep you alive.

There are many formulas to calculate your BMR. A simple one for adult males is [bodyweight x 10] + [2 x bodyweight]. So the BMR for a 170-lb. male would be 1,700 + 340, or 2,040 calories per day to sustain itself. Divide this into equal meals every two to three hours, combining protein and carbohydrates in your first few meals, and then protein and vegetables in your final meals of the day.

    The post-workout meal
The only exception to this rule is your post-workout meal, at which point your body is starving for protein and carbohydrates. The two carbohydrates that work best are dextrose and maltodextrin; these are both digested at a high rate and will replenish your glycogen stores. You can get them from any health food store. If that isn’t adequate for you, feel free to have something that acts more quickly, like honey or a sports drink, which will also suffice. Fruit sugars (fructose) take much longer to be absorbed by the body and should be avoided.

With your carbohydrates, you must also have protein to halt protein breakdown, and repair and build muscles. Typically, 0.8 grams of protein per pound of body mass is effective."

that's it. just some quick questions since i'm not too food saavy. What are some alternative food ideas to the ones they suggest? Obviously I don't want to eat the same meals every day. So what should I eat other than grilled chicken and fish? What are some good starches other than yams? Anything similar to brown rice and lentils? The line "Fats should be included in a few of your meals and should comr from olive, canola, or faxseed oil, natural peanut butter, avacadoes, and fatty fish" ...I have no idea, other than peanut butter as to what any of that means. Any other tips or alternatives you can think to add are welcome. Thanks.

  18. QUESTION:
Not quite a question, more a statement!?
I have just been reading lots of things online about cat breeds and behaviours and the one thing in common most of these articles have is they tell you not to pick a kitten who shys away from you or seems dull. This angers me quite a bit as I got 2 kittens in December 2010 from our local animal sanctuary. The first one we choose came to us straight away, she played with the tassels on my cousins boots and we could tell she was full of life and was going to be the life of the party. The second one we chose was just sitting on a chair taking everything in. I went to stroke her and while she let me I could tell she wasn't comfortable with me doing it. It was as if she was too scared to run away from me. Her eyes just seemed so sad and the thought of leaving her there broke my heart so we went against what all these kind of articles said and chose her too.

We got them home and Tilly straight away was into everything and loved being cuddled. She is very vocal and full of mischief. The quiet one who we called Dave hid behind the TV and refused to come out. If we managed to pick her up she went mad scratching to be put down again. She was scared by everything.

We gave her a lot of space and time and tried to feed her food out of our hands. She eventually started to sniff the food but would swipe at you so you threw it down and she ate it from the floor. She refused to play. Both cats got along well together though. Over time Dave eventually started coming out more and more and while she didn't want to be petted or picked up she would sleep on the chair or walk about infront of us. We never once heard her meow or purr.

At this time neither of the kittens were allowed out, but my sons friend had been up and when he left he didn't close the front door tight behind him and Dave got out. (It wasn't his fault, we had just had a new lock put on and he didn't realise that the lock was stiff and had to be slammed to close right). We couldn't find her anywhere. We constantly called for her and went searching but no one had seen her. We would be out all hours of the day and night looking for her. We were very scared for her as she was so timid and thought she wouldnt approach any humans. On the 5th day we went on another door to door search, this time with a reward for her. One door we knocked was answered by a young teenage boy who said he hadn't seen her but that a friend of his had posted on facebook that a small black kitten had turned up on her doorstep. He rung the girl and the kitten was still there. Her garden backs onto my back garden but there is a massive fence, a hedge and trees between the houses. The entrance to her estate however was about a miles walk away. We got into the car with the cat carrier and went to her house and sure enough there was Dave. This young girl had been feeding her but she was very very skinny. We had a struggle with her but managed to get her in the carrier and brought her home. The first thing she done was go straight to her food bowel and eat and drink, then she promptly fell asleep. The other kitten was so glad to have her home and just wanted to play. She couldn't understand why Dave wasn't playing back so for the next couple of nights Dave slept on our bed. She didn't even have the energy to jump down from it. All she could do was eat and sleep. The vet gave her a clean bill of health and told us that she was just exhausted from being outside for 5 days and to give her time to build her strength back up again and she would be fine. Ever since that we have had a different kitten on our hands. She will now eat from our hands, she will come over for a stroke and purrs. She still wont meow very much but over time she is starting to meow more. She still wont let us pick her up nor will she sit on your knee, but she will come up beside us if she wants company which is now quite a lot.

Both kittens have brought us so much pleasure in their own ways, but more so Dave as we have watched her turn from a shy timid kitten who wouldn't come near humans to a confident loving cat. I hate to think that if I had took the advice of the articles I had read before I got them and the articles I read tonight then I wouldn't have choose her and because she was so shy I doubt many others would have chose her when there were so many friendly kittens in the shelter. No one knows what kind of trauma this kitten may have had before the shelter picked her up, but with patience and love and attention she has turned into a much loved part of our family.

What made you chose your cat, or how did your cat choose you?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, just as with humans some cats and kittens can be slow to warm up. That they have a more reserved temperament does not always mean that they might not turn out to be affectionate and friendly cats.

One of mine was a stray when I met her and was not only skittish but growled and even spit at me. Now she doesn't want me out of her sight.
I did not choose her, she chose me. After I had been feeding her for a while she suddenly decided I was alright after all and insisted that she move in with me.

  19. QUESTION:
What do you think about the pros and cons of coffee?
I was reading my emails this morning and one email I read was about the pros and cons of coffee. It read
    Cutting Out Coffee

Are you a one-cup-a-day kinda guy or more like a nine-cups-a-day kinda gal? Coffee is as much part of the average adult’s morning routine as is brushing their teeth. The aroma of a fresh brewed cup ‘o Joe or the taste of a freshly pulled shot of espresso is enough to get anyone out of bed on time, even on a frosty, cold morning…
(this article came from Life Script Health Advantage)
I'm a two cup kinda gal.. Just for the record.
If you keep read this article it reads the pros of coffee said to help with "eased post-workout muscle pain and the combination of caffeine and exercise can reduce the risk of skin cancer.Other findings said three or more daily cups of coffee may aid memory in older women, and drinking five or more cups a day can help prevent Alzheimer’s disease."
The cons: In March 2007, the American Psychiatric Association said more than 250 milligrams of caffeine daily may cause insomnia, irregular heartbeat, muscle spasms, and the inability to concentrate. Other studies indicate that an afternoon power nap is more effective than caffeine at boosting energy levels and improving alertness. And most recently, in January 2008, the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology said that drinking two cups of coffee a day doubles the risk of miscarriage in pregnant women. (See related article: Is Coffee Crashing Your Diet?)
All of the information came from the same article and reading this opened my eyes to how a harmless cup of coffee can do to your body over time. I'm not saying I'm going to stop drinking coffee but that I'll try to drink in moderasion.

    • ANSWER:
I think that if anybody bothered to read the entire question, then they are a fool. If you want to drink coffee, drink coffee. If you don't want it, don't drink it.

All the BS studies out there are of absolutely no consequence at your breakfast table.

  20. QUESTION:
    How Lose Weight Healthily?
Hi, my name is Mary. i thinking this good article for people concern lose weight health

Most of us obsess about how fast we can shed the weight we want to lost. The safer, more recommended route is to think about how we can lose weight steadily
,healthily, and be able to keep the weight off.

    Set reasonable weight loss goals.
By setting a more practical target,we’re more likely to succeed and be encouraged to continue with the new eating and exercise regimen that got us there . Recent studies suggest a 10%reduction in body weight as the realistic starting aim. Slowly and surely is the better way to go. But always remember your personal worth is not measured in kilograms.

    Drink Plenty of Water
When you’re feeling hungry, reach first for a glass of water. You could actually be dehydrated instead. Drinking six to eight glasses of water a day can help you curb your appetite and fill you up so you don’t over eat. Plus enough water ensures that both degestion and metabolism are working at their full capacity. And there’s no contest that water is the best substitute for any beverage, since it’s calorie-free. So drink, drink, drink water

    Stay Active
You don’t need to do daily strenuous aerobic exercise in order to say farewell to some extra kilos.Committing oneself to such a strict regime will only be too much of a strain on your body, especially if it’s not used to such a workout , and it’s likely you won’t stick to the routine. Opt for something more doable. If you’re not accusstomed to heavy exercise then explore gentle yoga, walking,or low-inpact aerobic classes. Find something you actually like, not what everyone says is the fastest way to burn calories. Half an hour to an hour a day ,three to five days a week of mederate exercise is good enough. Aside from proper exercise , remember to keep moving during the day. Take the stairs instead of the lift. Squeeze your abdomen and buttocks as you’re waiting for the traffic light. Walk everywhere you can.

    Don’t Starve Yourself
You need energy to get along in your daily life, as well as. To engage in a healthy amount of exercise. Not eating enough will only leave you feeling drained ,irritable, and can lead to long and short term medical problems. Don’t dip down below 1,200 calories per day.A diet plan that’s too low in calories will actually make it harder for you to lose weight, since your metabolism will slow down as your body attempts to conserve energy. It’s also essential that you eat breakfast since it fuels you for the day and you’ll be less likely to stuff yourself during lunch. Eat what you want (but do try to stay away from cake, ice cream, and junk food.) but do watch your portions. For example, eat half of what your order and take the other half home.

    • ANSWER:
Dont forget breakfast also. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. If you skip breakfast you will actually gain weight. Eating a big breakfast will stop overeating later on in the day. And it helps speed up your metabolism also. You can also get a calorie calculator. Like I burn 3,300 calories per day. It's nice to know how many calories your body burns.

  21. QUESTION:
Did you see this article about baby bottles? A Little Scary!?
What do you think? Will you be buying glass baby bottles or bottles free of the chemical?

    Here's the Article:

Plastic bottle chemical may be harmful: agency
By Will Dunham Posted Tue Apr 15, 2008 2:42pm PDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A chemical in some plastic food and drink packaging including baby bottles may be tied to early puberty and prostate and breast cancer, the U.S. government said on Tuesday.

Based on draft findings by the National Toxicology Program, part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, senior congressional Democrats asked the Food and Drug Administration to reconsider its view that the chemical bisphenol A is safe in products for use by infants and children.

The chemical, also called BPA, is used in many baby bottles and the plastic lining of cans of infant formula.

The National Toxicology Program went further than previous U.S. government statements on possible health risks from BPA.

It said: "There is some concern for neural and behavioral effects in fetuses, infants and children at current human exposures." The findings expressed concern about exposure in these populations, "based on effects in the prostate gland, mammary gland, and an earlier age for puberty in females."

Rep. John Dingell, a Michigan Democrat and chairman of the House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee, said the draft cast doubt on the FDA's position that BPA was safe.

"I hope the FDA is willing to reconsider their position on BPA for the safety of our infants and children," he said.

The National Toxicology Program said laboratory rodents exposed to BPA levels similar to human exposures developed precancerous lesions in the prostate and mammary glands, among other things.

"The possibility that bisphenol A may impact human development cannot be dismissed. More research is needed," the agency said.

Bisphenol A is used in the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins and can be found in food and drink packaging as well as compact discs and some medical devices. Some dental sealants or composites contain it as well.

The National Toxicology Program expressed "negligible concern" that exposure of pregnant women to BPA causes fetal or neonatal death, birth defects or reduced birth weight and growth in babies. It also had "negligible concern" that exposure causes reproductive problems in adults.

The American Chemistry Council industry group said the conclusions confirmed that human exposure to bisphenol A is extremely low and noted no direct evidence that exposure adversely affects reproduction or development in humans.

In Canada, the Globe and Mail newspaper said the Canadian health ministry was ready to declare BPA a dangerous substance, making it the first regulatory body in the world to reach such a determination. The newspaper said the ministry could announce the decision as soon as Wednesday.

Environmental activists long have warned about health concerns regarding the chemical. They praised the draft findings of the National Toxicology Program, which cited more potential worries about the chemical than did a panel of experts that advised the program last year.

"NTP's decision corrects the scientific record. It reflects a significant body of science showing that BPA may play a larger role than previously thought in a host of common health problems," Anila Jacob of the Environmental Working Group said in a statement.

      Lynnae,
I read a simular article last fall about this and it gave the names of bottles that might harm your child. I was suprised to see Dr. Browns was at the top along with many other name brands such as Playtex. This is when I first became pregnant with Riley. Needless to say I bought 5 cases of glass baby bottles of all sizes figuring if one breaks we have plenty more. This is quite alarming and scary and should be plastered EVERYWHERE so that mommies and future mommies know these risks. Thanks for touching base with your question.

Edit: Reading the response above me I felt I had to add this edit. The effects of these chemicals are LONG TERM. You may not see these effects now or in a few months. Over the years with developing pubety and such they may become. So, as a responsible parent how can you sit and say it does not bother you? It may in 10 years... then what??
      Lyn

is this article important to canada? please give ur opinions in my opinion it is.

    heres the article:

FORT SMITH, N.W.T.–NDP Leader Jack Layton took his campaign to the north yesterday, saying he wants to alert Canadians to the environmental dangers posed by oil sands production.

There is a growing concern in the north that the huge oil sands production in Alberta is polluting both the air and the water. Some northern native communities have even blamed elevated cancer rates on the fouling of their water downstream from Fort McMurray.

Layton told a group of about 75 people that Canadians need to be told about the potential for environmental disaster in communities where people could once drink from almost every creek, river and lake.

"We just passed over the development in northern Alberta ... and it's depressing to see untrammelled development with significant environmental consequences taking place with no action by the government to address it," said Layton, who called for a moratorium on further development.

On the way from Calgary to Fort Smith, Layton's campaign plane had flown low over the Alberta tar sands. The large toxic tar ponds – some lake-sized – were immediately visible from the air, including one where hundreds of dead ducks were found earlier this year.

Linda Duncan, Edmonton-Strathcona NDP candidate, called the tars sands a "reeking devastation," noting Lake Athabasca has been "completely contaminated."

Oil sand deposits lie beneath 141,000 square kilometres of boreal forest and muskeg, almost all of it in Alberta. To recover the oil, much of the land has been strip-mined.

The oil sands cover about one-fifth of Alberta's land mass and so far an area twice the size of New Brunswick has been mined.

"It really is a complete embarrassment to Canada," said Duncan, who acted as tour guide as the plane flew low over the tar sands.

In Fort Smith, Layton ridiculed Prime Minister Stephen Harper's suggestion that he is standing up for the north. Two weeks ago, Harper travelled to the north to make a series of announcements and profess his love for the Arctic.

"He'd better start by controlling the pollution and taking action to protect the north from the toxic (waste) discharged by his friends in the big oil companies. We see no evidence of him wanting to do that," Layton said.

"Despite warnings from his own government's agencies, Harper fast-tracked (a development) north of Fort McMurray, without any conditions to mitigate the significant impacts on the environment and on the health of communities like Fort Smith," he said.

Conservative MP Dean Del Mastro (Peterborough) said Layton's position on the tar sands contradicts his assertions that he stands up for workers. He pointed out that fabrication and manufacturing jobs depend on oil. "Does he have any idea of how the thousands and thousands of workers right across this country ... depend on Canada's energy sector and Fort McMurray for their everyday jobs?" he said in a telephone interview. He also said Layton knows the federal government is increasing scrutiny in the oils sands. "The companies are ... improving their environmental processes and Mr. Layton should know better to come down on what really is a very significant part of Canada's economy."

    THANKS!!
