Healthiest Energy Drinks

Seaweed has been used throughout history as a food with powerful healing benefits. One particular strain has been gaining currency in the circles of health-minded individuals and has also come under intense academic study as a result of its vast possible health applications. That particular strain is called limu moui, an exotic brown sea-plant that originates off the island of Tonga, near Fiji, in the South Pacific.

The reason for the large volume of research currently being conducted on it is due to a certain compound found within the cell walls of the seaweed. Though it is not unique to limu moui, its concentration and particular structure unique to that strain are of interest to western scientists, pharmaceutical companies, and the health food industry.

The compound in question is a sulfated polysaccharide called fucoidan. The presence of fucoidan, as well as a large host of other beneficial factors, is the reason that this sea-plant from Tonga has been dubbed a "superfood" by dietitians and health practitioners. Though the plant is only in the preliminary stages of research, it shows a great deal of promise in its potential benefits. The results of incorporating this seaweed into a lifestyle whether by raw consumption or by extract form cannot yet be guaranteed, but a lot of research does currently exist that speaks to the plant's capacity as a potent boon to physical health.
A leading research study has conducted initial investigations into the nature of the sea-plant's benefits and have found that it possesses possible antitumor and neuroprotective benefits. This simply means that it can both guard your system from cancer and guard your neural pathways from deterioration (which leads to conditions such as dementia).

They have even gone so far as to publicly release statements that speculate about its possible application towards the fields of combating such conditions as allergies, bacterial infections, hypertension, and viral infections. Besides having antitumor properties, it is also can stimulate your immune system, meaning that it further guards your system from illness by keeping your body's internal defense system on alert.

The plant derives its incredible properties from the exotic island that it is grown. Seaweed is a very permeable organism, meaning that substances can easily pass through it. In the case of some unfortunate seaweed strains, that means they are susceptible to the absorption of many toxins and heavy metals present in polluted water. However, in the case of limu moui, it resides in waters that are fertile and clean and thus absorb many of the nutritional gifts that the rich, lush ocean has to offer. This ensures that powerful phytonutrients and colloidal minerals.

The power of this seaweed is thought to be the reason behind the scientifically puzzling phenomenon of the high number of perfectly healthy centenarians (persons over the age of 100 years old) inside the Tongan population. Scientists have been curious for years about what it was on the island of Tonga that caused so many of their citizens to live to very ripe old ages in excellent physical condition. Scientific studies investigating the matter found strong correlations between the presence of limu moui in the diet and longevity accompanied by sound physical health.

Limu moui and fucoidan are not substances that should be thought of as "magic bullets". They will not cure your life of every physical ill that currently plagues it, and they will not immediately restore your body from disrepair caused by common unhealthy lifestyle choices, like a predominantly sedentary way of life and poor diet. Their addition to your diet, however, are not a choice that should be overlooked just because they won't drastically change the quality of your life immediately.

They are substances with huge nutritional values and are packed with a lot of compounds that help your body work more efficiently and with more vigor and strength.

  4. QUESTION:
What are some Healthy Energy Drinks unlike Redbull and Monster?
Drinks that are healthy and give you energy without caffeine, sugar, and so on like Red Bull. Healthy energy drinks such as FRS but ones that you can buy in stores at walmart or something. If you ever tried any, what are the results and what drinks would you recommend?

    • ANSWER:
I would not recommend any of these energy drink out there on the market. All these energy drinks like nano vapor and red bull rely heavily on caffeine. Therefore, you can expect some kind of crash after a little while.

I have tried almost all of these, and I am not going to lie, they did give me an adrenaline rush and I was literally all over the gym, maxing almost every machine out and lifting my personal best. But I literally dropped dead on the couch when I went back home after a couple of hours.
And not to mention, these drinks are diuretics, meaning they make you pee more often by temporarily preventing ADH hormone from reabsorbing water in the kidneys.

what you should do instead is changing your diet. If you are planning to do athletic activities, you should increase your protein and water intake while training period. Also you'll aid from a good amount of fruits (especially the ones rich in vitamins like apples and oranges), veggies, meat, and fish.

While competing you should start with water, and then switch to electrolytes like Powerade or Gatorade. If you are competing in high intensity and short events like power lifting, sprinting, or discuss throw etc., you can jump start your creatine intake after consulting a medical professional.
If you are just wanting to last through the day energetically, I would recommend increased amount of fruits and vegetables (or juices) instead of all that red bull crap.
Trust me, all these energy drinks do more bad than worse.

  5. QUESTION:
What is the healthiest energy drink?
Just wondering. My mom is a health freak and I'm a monster energy freak, and she's like anti-monster. Im like addicted (not really) haha but she never let's me get them anymore because of some stupid health freak article telling how bad they are and she made me read it (I didn't even read it). Are there any 'healthy' energy drinks that don't taste gross? And how bad really is monster low-carb? Thank God for my dad who doesn't care if I get them!! Lol

    • ANSWER:
Black Coffee (good coffee is delicious black):

It has no carbs, almost no calories, improves concentration & mood, and has been shown to reduce the chances of Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, Type II diabetes, and certain cancers. It also has about 4x the antioxidants found in tea.

  6. QUESTION:
Are there any healthy energy drinks out there?
I like Red Bull, but I know it's bad for the heart. Are there any natural energy drinks out there that are not harmful? Someone suggested Acai fruit drink, but I don't know what it is or how effective it is.
    Any recommendations are appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
XS Energy Drink... it isn't sold in stores, rather sold through independent distributors (weird, I know... but I'm glad I found one!)

You may find this interesting since you are a Red Bull fan:
      http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/242794/xs_energy_drink_vs_red_bull_which_one.html

Anyways, here are some specs on XS:
      0 Carbs
      0 Sugar
      8-12 Calories
      4900% Vitamin B12

      Flavors include:
      1. Rootbeer Blast - also comes as Caffeine Free
      2. Cranberry-Grape Blast — also comes as Caffeine Free…
      3. Tropical Blast - also comes as Caffeine free
      4. Citrus Blast
      5. Cherry Blast
      6. Electric Lemon Blast
      7. Tea-Berry Blast
      8. Cola Blast
      9. Black Cherry Cola Blast
      10. Peach Tea Blast

I really like the Peach Tea and Cranberry-Grape.

But again, you have to buy through a distributor. But the good news is that the company the distributor gets it from, Quixtar, offers 100% money back guarantee on all of it's products (and I've tested this... lol -- they give prepaid return postage which is nice)

Here's where I get mine from, hopefully this helps:

I'd be more than happy to give you the guy I buy through's email address if you email me. He gives out free samples so maybe you can take advantage of that... it wouldn't hurt :)

  10. QUESTION:
What is the best, healthiest, energy drink I can use right before working out?
I always love an energy booster before going to the gym.

    • ANSWER:
Water. Energy drinks have too much sugar and just give a false sense of energy. Your body needs water to hydrate itself, sugar in energy drinks just dehydrate you which can be a big problem after a strenuous workout. Flavor your water with some lemon juice if you need to.

  11. QUESTION:
What’s the healthiest energy drink that’s not 5 hour energy?

    • ANSWER:
All energy drink are unhealthy. None of them have any positive ingredients.

Chocolate milk is a good, partially healthy energy drink, though.

Also, if you are just trying to not fall asleep you can drink a cold glass of water and walk up and down the stairs a couple of times. It takes 2 minutes and it is very effective.

  12. QUESTION:
are there any healthy energy drinks tat i can find at convinence stores?
or wats the most healthiest ... im 14 boy

    • ANSWER:
Glaceau VitaminWater (any flavor; 20 oz bottle)
      130 calories
      33 grams sugar

Vitamins and water might sound like the ultimate nutritional tag team, but what the label doesn’t say is that a bottle of this stuff carries nearly as much sugar and calories as a can of Coke. Makes sense, though, since this so-called functional beverage is produced by our often-sugar-crazy friends at The Coca-Cola Company.

  13. QUESTION:
What do you think of energy drinks healthy or not?
I have at least once a day especially 'cause my energy level is low. Are there more pros then cons?

  15. QUESTION:
What is the healthiest energy drink out there?

    • ANSWER:
Well I like FRS. It contains less sugar and caffeine than regular energy drinks so I don't crash after I've taken it. They also offer low calorie options so they're good for a pre-workout boost if you workout a lot. FRS also has a lot of vitamins and antioxidants in it, which gives your system an added boost. There is an article here with more in depth information on it and they have a coupon for a free trial of it http://www.voernix.com/2008/07/frs.html

what energy pills or drinks are healthy?
I've quit drinking, trying to quit smoking and now I'm exercising regularly, but sometimes i need a little boost to get me started. I'm getting tired of energy drinks cuz the caffeine lasts too long after the work out.
I'm looking for something healthy, or made mostly from vitamins and plants for an energy boost.

  23. QUESTION:
Is there a healthier alternative to energy drinks?
I am trying to ween myself off of those Lo-Carb Monster energy drinks and was wondering if there was a healthier alternative to them... besides more sleep, LOL. I work crazy hours and need some type of energy boost in the morning. Any ideas?
    Thanks. :)

    • ANSWER:
Try an Apple in the morning or some orange juice, juices boost your electrolytes and an Apple in the morning is equivalent to a cup of coffee as far as waking you up in the morning. Or even some gum or mints can wake you up. Not to mention eating a balanced breakfast is the best but in this hectic society it is often hard, I know. But breakfast is the most important meal of the day, it is your fuel. you wouldn't start off on some long trip with only 1/3 a tank of gas would you? well that is like going without breakfast. But trust me i know how hard it is to wake up in time to eat. I usually would rather get those few extra minutes of Zs and get in my shower than make sure I got my breakfast. But there are plenty of options out there besides energy drinks. I am glad you are trying to get away from them. Keep up the good work! Good luck

  24. QUESTION:
Best and/or Healthiest Energy Drink ?
Basically, I am looking for an energy boost in some form or another. Of course in today's world it is natural for one to turn to coffee, but i hate coffee. I don't like the taste or the very many variations of mocha, frappe and what have you. Now one may turn to energy drinks. I also have another hatred in this category. Red Bull = Vodka mixed drink taste reminder. If your like me and mix Red Bull with some kind of alcohol you know that you are always going to remember the taste in your mouth the night that you threw it all back up haha.

That in turn would lead to my question; What would be the best/healthiest energy drink?
I include healthy into the equation because health is a very important area when deciding if something in the food or drink industry is the worth your time or not because odds are you will consume a lot of this type of energy drink. Sugar-free is always a plus, and a boost of vitamins and minerals are another. I've also read that lower caffeine is beneficial to overall health/performance as well. Simply put, I'm in college, I need the boost to get me through the hours upon hours of reading/studying/facebook lol.

Given these statements, perhaps some of you wonderful people out in the Yahoo Answers world could possibly lend me a hand, so to speak.

I would love to hear any suggestions, recommendations, and/or advice.

Thanks to everyone who reads/replies to my question and hopefully this will not only inform myself, but the many people who may stumble upon this topic as well.

    Thanks again!

    Frank

  25. QUESTION:
What is a good and healthy alternative to energy drinks?
I work a lot and sometimes I literally go to work 7 hours after I get off the night before. Sometimes my shifts are as long as 10 or 11 hours in length and I usually consume 1 or 2 energy drinks to wake me up and when I need to power through to the end. I know how bad energy drinks can be if consumed regularly, but its the easiest way for me to wake up. I hate coffee, and I just need an easy alternative.
    Thanks!

      Water

  26. QUESTION:

Some people tell me that Red Bull and those types of drinks degrade the bones and blah blah blah. But I need something to boost my energy levels but doesn't do me any harm.

    • ANSWER:

  27. QUESTION:
Can eating healthy or drinking energy drinks reduce ADD/ADHD symptoms?
Or having a good night's sleep?

From my own observations, it seems that I tend to be more focused and pay attention better after eating or doing certain things.

When I don't have a good night sleep I have difficulty hearing what people are saying, it's like my mind blocks them out intentionally for some reason.

If I don't eat right, I become self-absorbed and become less alert to the environment around me (bad for driving!).

If I don't drink an energy drink on a work day I am more prone to passive-aggression and holding grudges against others, and fail to be more openminded and see things from other peoples' point of view. I also have a harder time pleasing customers when I don't have an energy drink to give me the boost.

But is there any scientific reason why this is? Am I just off on everything?

    • ANSWER:
I think eating less sugar and less artificial coloring and flavoring can reduce the problems associated with this disorder. Eating healthy can make you feel better and when you feel better you will sleep better.

  28. QUESTION:
im always weak and tired does any one know if i could take something besides energy drinks to give some energy?
i work a 3rd shif,t when i get off my shift i dont have the energy to do anything. I try to work out but i just dont have the energy for it. I wanted to know if there was any vitamins or something else i can take thats healthy besides energy drinks

    • ANSWER:
you sound physically exhausted ,energy drinks are no good as give you a huge sugar rush then send it crashing down really low leaving it worse, and are not healthy full of sugars and stimulants and caffeine really bad ,can give you palpitations ,you need slow release things ,a bowel of porridge with banana would keep you going much better ,Is there any chance you can get some rest, even if you could get some sick leave ,if you are aching ,tired ,and breathless ,it may be your iron or ferratin is low,it would be worth getting a full blood count this can tell if you have anemia or deficiencies that would cause your tiredness,in the meantime avoid those drinks ,have lots of water and eat healthily ,hope you feel better soonx

  29. QUESTION:
    Are low-carb energy drinks healthy?
I was wondering if the low-carb energy drinks(like monster)are healthier for you then the regular ones?

    • ANSWER:
Carbs come from all sorts of foods and ingredients like sugar, bread, potatoes. A lot of carbs have lots of calories and so less carbs means less calories a lot of the time. Usually reducing carbs means taking out the sugar and putting in substitute sugar like diet coke etc. Splenda seems to be a good substitute for sugar without giving you carbs and calories. I've been told that XS has no carbs or sugar in it and it has like 10 calories.
      http://jcheung1.qhealthzone.com/Products/Thumbnail.aspx?ctg=12945&ast=406320&rtl=12918
You can look at that for more info. I know Red bull has like 27 grams of sugar and 110 calories so you take in more than you burn. That's probably why low carb energy drinks are better.

  30. QUESTION:
What are some Healthy (Non Energy) Drinks?
Drinks that are healthy and give you energy without caffeine, sugar, and so on like Red Bull. Such as FRS but ones that you can buy in stores at walmart or something. If you ever tried any, what are the results and what drinks would you recommend?

    • ANSWER:
Not all energy drinks are actually bad for you. Redbull, Monster, No Fear are all load with sugar and crap. I drink xs Energy Drinks and they are pretty awesome. No fat, no sugar, no carbs…just a good mix of B vitamins. They also have like 12 different flavors unlike Redbull or Monster where they all taste the same. Some of the flavors are also offered in caffeine free if you’re worried about taking them at night. Price is less as well. I buy mine here: http://gives1.qhealthzone.com/search/default.aspx?Ntt=xs

  32. QUESTION:
My parents don't let me drink energy drinks?
I want to try an energy drink considering a lot of people drink them and they look good. But when I asked my mom she said no because it could cause a heart attack and it has too much sugar in it. Is she right? Are they that bad to drink? Is there such thing as a healthy energy drink or one's without sugar?

    • ANSWER:
You shouldn't want to try an energy drink to "look good". They are nasty and she is totally right! They can give you a heart attack in the long run, I don't know if you have heard but some athletes that have had heart problems have been linked to energy drinks, it is also not necessarily the sugar but what gives you the energy...If you want to try go ahead it's not like it's going to kill you, but you may show side effects in the long run, it all depends on how much of it you have and how often.
      Good Luck

  33. QUESTION:
    Healthy energy drinks?
Me and my BF are going to be hitting the gym starting November. We are going to be working out around 4am. He has to go directly to work afterward, I will be going to school and then work. I will be getting off work around 8pm. I am probably going to be needing an energy drink and i dont want anything really harsh cuz i dont like them (monsters and redbulls). I normally drink coffee but i dont know how healthy that is. Um, does anyone know any good drinks? Are vitamin waters any good? Idk... any good suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
I use to do Martial Arts for many years and I can tell you I have tried many things out there and your best bet is to steer clear of all those hyped up drinks. They are full of things that have proven to not be that good for you. Sugars and other chemicals and crap.

I think you just need to make sure you are hydrated with water- sports drinks are full of sodium. Eat a piece of fruit or make a fruit shake to go or juice. if you have a juicer you can add in some veggies and fruits and make the drink for afterwards.

  34. QUESTION:
    How healthy are energy drinks?
are they as healthy as their manufacturers make them out to be?

    • ANSWER:
The Average energy drink is about the same caffeine amount as 6 to 8 cups of coffee. But I have heard of some that have had as much as 16 cups worth. There's also tons of sugar in in. It's really quite unhealthy

  35. QUESTION:
We all talk about good diet and stuff, but is it healthy to drink energy drinks like red bull?
What is the pros and cons? Any facts?

    • ANSWER:
Absolutely not. NO. NEVER. It's like drinking 20 cups of coffee all at once. It can cause all kinds of problems. When the caffeine wears off you crash and feel 10 times worse. Water, or flavoured water is much better for you.

  36. QUESTION:
Are energy drinks better or worse then lattes?

  37. QUESTION:
what is a healthy pace to drink energy drinks?
I've been drinking one amp energy a day for the past 3 days. I have 3 left. I was just wondering if that was very unhealthy or if it was perfectly fine.

    • ANSWER:
to be honest, its not very healthy at all.

energy drinks are all fine and good for a boost of energy, but by no means should you be having one a day. not only is that a lot of sugar and calories, but there aren't a lot of nutrients in there for your body to function properly.

i worked in a kung fu school for five years and my co-worker would have a monster energy drink in place of a meal all the time. this almost gave him an ulcer. and even bumping into him near his stomach area would cause him extreme pain.

everything in moderation and for energy drinks... even less is more.

  38. QUESTION:
What is a healthy replacement for energy drinks that will give similar effect?
My husband drinks 3-5 daily and has horrible headaches when he doesn't...help please!

    • ANSWER:
Your husband is a caffeine addict. It's the classic pattern - high caffeine consumption and horrible headaches when he doesn't get enough caffeine. So the answer depends on whether you want to cut back on the sugar and other unhealthy additives while leaving caffeine consumption the same (he'd still get headaches) or cut back on caffeine consumption.

If you want a healthy high-caffeine drink, the obvious answer is coffee. Black coffee has no calories, specialty coffee tastes good black, and most energy drinks are only coffee strength (obscured by energy drinks coming in cans the size of two mugs). 5-10 mugs a day should replace the energy drinks. If black coffee is too bitter, put some milk and sugar in it, but those add calories. Fancy coffee drinks are as bad as energy drinks!

An exotic alternative, if he really hates the taste of coffee or has a bad reaction to coffee in particular, is matcha - Japanese tea ceremony tea. Matcha is the tea that goes into green tea ice cream and green tea drinks, so if he likes those he's likely to like matcha. Matcha is also the healthiest drink at that caffeine level. The major problem with matcha is the expense; good matcha typically starts around an ounce (enough for about 15 American-sized cups) and goes up from there, while should buy you at least 40 cups' worth of very good coffee. Super-premium matcha can run over an ounce! (Cheaper matcha exists, but it's sold as a cooking ingredient and not intended to be drunk on its own. Not that you can't.)

If the goal is cutting back on the caffeine, the idea would be to drink a bit less energy drink a day - substitute a small can of Red Bull for a 16-ounce can of Monster, drop the can, substitute a can, and so on. That's a fast schedule (effectively dropping 1 cup of coffee per day), so staying at each level for a day might work better. The important thing is that quitting caffeine cold turkey is rarely the best idea.

  43. QUESTION:
    Are ANY energy drinks healthy?
I am 15, anemic and feel fatigued at school, almost everyday or at least in the last hour or so.

I always skipped my breakfast but now i realize how important breakfast really is, and make sure i have a healthy breakfast before leaving for school. Although i feel much better than earlier, i still feel lazy, fatigued and tired most of the time at school.

I have a glass of iced-tea in the break, which certainly helps, but only for an hour or two. the easiest way out seems to be energy drink, but a little research tells me most of them are harmful and inadvisable for growing children.

    Could you tell me

    3) better alternatives for me to be 'fresh' and lively for the whole day?

  44. QUESTION:
    Healthier Energy Drinks?
What are some healthier-than-Monster/Rockstar/etc. energy drinks that I can get at my neighborhood grocery store?

    • ANSWER:
I would forgo the grocery store if I were you, and order a health/energy drink powder online or go to a GNC or Vitamin Shoppe and ask what they have. The powders are great, because you can keep a serving or two with you at all times, and just mix it in your water bottle as needed for a boost.

Advocare makes a great one called "Spark" that has B-vitamins as well as other vitamins and antioxidants, and about the same amount of caffeine as a cup of coffee. It works great for me, and never makes me feel jittery. It's a little pricey, but no more expensive than buying cans of Monster/Rockstar/etc. I buy it on ebay for a significant discount vs. the website prices.

  46. QUESTION:
    Healthy Energy drinks?
I'm headed into a CRAZY year this next year, with school work, and everything else I've got crammed into my year, and I'm gonna need some non natural energy. But so many of those energy drinks are just full of empty calories and junk that'll cause you to crash just a little while later, I need some healthy alternatives. What do you guys suggest that'll keep me going through the hectics days, without making my 15 pounds heavier?

    • ANSWER:
I'd suggest sleeping whenever possible. You may have to make some changes in your schedule and not involve yourself in a few social activities, but try to pare down your calendar to afford yourself healthy sleep.

There are no energy drinks that aren't jam-packed with sugar and calories. They all have that stuff, that's why they're all unhealthy for you. Fight through and get sleep.

      Try turning the tv off.

  48. QUESTION:
What can be changed instead of energy drinks?
I am not drinking them, but one person I know does, so I need to give him an advice, because I know energy drinks are harmful for kidneys, heart and stomach. He wakes up, does some sport (~1h), then takes a shower and eats breakfast. Later at ~ midday, he feels, he is tired and only energy drinks help him. What should be changed instead of energy drinks to more healthier thing?

    • ANSWER:
Okay he should be taking his vitamins for sure. He needs a B vitamin and CoQ10 is also a known energy booster. He should also be eating energy boosting foods like fish and nuts. Nuts are a great midday snack and may help increase his energy levels. He should also be making sure he is taking in enough protein. If he is working out or playing sports he needs to feed his muscles or they'll start fading.

Also not all energy drinks are made equal. I myself am a college soccer player and the only energy drink that I trust to give me an added boost on a soccer day is FRS. It is healthier than the other energy drinks because it is loaded with vitamins, and antioxidants and also because it has less sugar and caffeine than regular energy drinks, making it a healthy option for athletes. I got started with it through a free trial which I got here http://www.voernix.com/2008/07/frs.html
