High Energy Drinks

High-energy food is good for boosting your immune system and for preparing your body for doing physical activity. Essentially, our bodies need high-energy food everyday in order for our bodies to be able to perform our daily routines.

When pursuing high impact sports, such as aerobics, running and swimming, high energy food should be consumed in larger proportions. Through establishing an understanding of high-energy foods and how to determine the proportions that you require for your weekly activities, you will be capable of maintaining a balanced diet.

Important high-energy food to be aware of includes food from the five main food groups. The main five food groups include fruit & vegetables, dairy, meats, grains and pasta. To ensure that you gain the maximum benefits from high-energy food, you should try to choose food from all five of the essential food groups.

When searching for high-energy food amongst fruits, you should look for the banana, pineapple and strawberries. Among the vegetable group, the most important high-energy food is green leafy vegetables, such as spinach and cabbage. A good balance of these two food types is highly desirable.

Dairy foods that contain fats offer the best high-energy foods, however, it must be stressed that you should only eat dairy foods with a high fat content if you intend to be very active. Generally, red meats are high in energy, while white meats will sustain your levels for normal daily activities, such as walking to the train station, or doing your housework.

Wheat and Barely are rich in high-energy nutrients and anything that contains these products can be considered a valuable food to eat to replenish lost energy levels. Pasta has long been regarded a staple food and can supply your body with much needed energy. Of course, you should only eat proportionate quantities in relation to the level of exercise you intend to pursue.

Establishing a healthy and balanced high-energy diet might take a little time to perfect, but once you understand the basics and that a high-energy food diet can be quiet diverse, you can experiment and create some fun and delicious meals.

Another fun way to maintain a high-energy food diet is to create high-energy drinks. One of the most effective high-energy drinks includes bananas, honey, eggs and milk. The bananas, honey and eggs are what give your body the high energy, while the milk helps mix it together to make a delicious ‘milkshake’ like drink.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What role if any does high energy drinks have to play in weight gain?
I am a very physically active person and mildly under-weight but with a strong ambition to add more and keep it. Am I on track with high energy drinks since at least in theory less activity will help me convert excess energy to weight?

    • ANSWER:
High energy drinks are full of sugar. If you do not burn the sugar in exercise, then it will turn to fat.

If you take in more calories than you use in any given day, then you must add weight. If you want weight, just eat foods with lots of sugar, fats and calories and do not use them through exercise.

  2. QUESTION:
Would high energy drinks be considered drugs?
    Monster, Redbull, Full throttle, etc.
All these would be classified as stimulants, and there are people literally addicted to them.
They do extensive damage to your body if you have too many drinks.

Why are high energy drinks not considered to be drugs like alcohol or pot?
How much do you have to add to cross the boundary?

    • ANSWER:
They're not considered a drug or alcohol because it's not even close to the above. The only thing that energy drinks have is A LOT of caffeine. That's why you should not intake sooo much of it!

  3. QUESTION:
What adverse affects can high-energy drinks have on our body?
High caffeine, high sugar drinks such as Red Bull and Burn.

    • ANSWER:
You become a Rabbi for an hour.

  4. QUESTION:
Can you get high of energy drinks?
I drank 2 red bulls and i stayed up all night w/ having to try...Now my grandma is saying that energy drinks get u high.....Is that true?Help me prove her wrong..;]
I drank 2 red bulls and i effortlessly stayed up all night. And now my grandma is saying that it can get you "high" as in like cocaine. But i disagree..hlp me prove her wrong.

    • ANSWER:
lol. I doubt they can get you all too "high." If she's talking a similar "high" to cocaine, she may be right. They can really wire you, but depending on your body weight and style, you have to drink a lot of them. Staying awake for long periods of time (72 hours +) can also make you hallucinate. Caffeine can really wreck your body, so if you do it, be careful and have a sober friend near by. 2 red bulls won't get you high unless your a 2 year old girl. You'll feel the negative effects long before the "good." You'll feel/get: racing heart, diarhea, dilated pupils, sweating, irritable, shaky. If you drink enough, you could OD and being to throw up, but this isn't all that easy.

  5. QUESTION:
should the sales of high energy drinks be regulated to teens 18 or younger, as tobacco is?

Can you please get a link showing the negative effects of high energy drinks on teens?

    • ANSWER:
Tobacco is regulated to 18 or older. And, while high energy drinks probably aren't the best things for kids to drink I don't think they've been shown to cause the extent of disease that tobacco has (cancer, heart disease, lung disease). Perhaps we should leave this for parents to regulate. They should be more aware of what their children are consuming. More government regulation and interference is not always the answer. I don't think schools should have this drinks for sale on campus, but the same could be said of sodas!

  6. QUESTION:
what effects do high energy drinks have on the body?
im talking about Red Bull, Monster, AMP, etc. i know all that sugar and caffeine cant be good on a regular basis.

is it alright to drink them occasionally, such as during strenuous activity, or a sport event?

    • ANSWER:
i would stay away from ALL those during any event, hell i wont ever drink them period! They just arent good for the body, they spike your energy and crash you hard...you need long chain carbohydrates man. research that and go to mtbr.com like i did and check out some reviews in the nutrition section and try some of them or just go to your lbs and try some electrolyte gels and maybe something else for longer rides. i recomment Hammer Gels. Power Gel is good too. Caffiene on occasion is ok and ive heard even during a ride a SMALL amount of it can be beneficial, might want to research that as well. I personally dont use it during a ride. id stay far away from all those crazy drinks man. Im strictly a Gatorade man and if i cant find that, its water or Powerade or some kinda energy water.

  7. QUESTION:
Is there a website showing that the sales of high energy drinks should be regulated to teens 18 or younger?
that they should be regulated to teens 18 or younger, as tobacco is?

    • ANSWER:
You asked this in another question. No, Tobacco is a substance, energy drinks are a mixture of substances. Caffeine is not lethal unless you have a lot. You need several gallons of coffee to OD on the stuff: http://www.caffeineguru.com/all-about-caffeine/

There are NO negative side effects of energy drinks that are serious. Sure, some have a lot of sugar, or too many will make you feel sick or jittery, but that's no different from a can of Coke, and is no reason to federally regulate them.

Why should energy drinks be regulated, it's a great market and helps the economy, the government has no right to interfere.

  11. QUESTION:
Do energy drinks cause high blood pressure?
I came back from the GP after being told that my blood pressure was rather high (160 / 110) but my heart rate was normal at 75.

Although these blood pressure tests are only one offs and more takings should be done for consistency, but I was wondering if anyone know whether or not this is due to energy drinks consumption?

I don't drink red bull every day, but when I do drink them, I tend to drink around 2-3 cans a day. I also drink lucozade quite frequently.

    • ANSWER:
It may cause a short term spike, yes. I haven't seen any conclusive date to suggest energy drinks cause long term problems, although I am aware there is quite a bit of concern over these drinks at the moment.

Your BP probably rose due to a combination of two things; possibly the energy drink, but the most likely explanation is 'white coat syndrome'.

Doctors or really any medical professional in a health care setting, can cause anxiety in patients subconsciously. Much of it is because we sometimes worry that the Doctor may give us bad news or want to do further investigations. This can result in blood pressure being artificially high.

The only real accurate way to determine your BP is to do a 24 hour BP study. Try taking your BP at home, three times daily for a week and give the results to your GP.

  12. QUESTION:

Also when do people drink them most often? In the morning or afternoon?

    • ANSWER:
The target market for energy drinks is people age 16-25

They are mostly consumed in the afternoon, and high percentage of them are consumed with alcohol.

For this reason, they came out with the coffee flavors, to try and boost sales for morning drinking.

And they are NOT toxic. Please show me one study that clearly shows them as being "toxic." Its all about moderation...

  14. QUESTION:

  18. QUESTION:
Can someone give me a list of high calorie energy drinks?
Try to shoot for 1000 calories in the least amount of cans.

    • ANSWER:
Most regular energy drinks have 110 to 140 calories per serving. 1,000 calories is unrealistic in just 1 or 2 cans and would take a lot to get there. By then you would have overdosed on caffeine and also severe dehydration from the caffeine giving you headaches and muscle/body aches and pains too. So why bother?

It would actually be safer to drink sodas to reach 1,000 calories as they have less caffeine.

I heard somewhere that some high energy drinks contain bull sperm. Any truth to that?

    • ANSWER:
"red Bull" was rumored to get one of its main ingredients from Bull's testicles. That was just a rumor, one ingredient, Taurine, does originate from a bull, although not the testicles, and it is artificially made in labs now. Just a fact as well- Taurine doesn't give you energy, it controls heart rate. is ok to drink high carb/high sugar energy drinks after lifting weights?
since you can drink gatorade....will the same be with energy drinks?
    i drink protein...

    • ANSWER:
yes many people include some high G.I. carbs in their post workout shake with their protein, its good to include some high G.I. carbs as they are fast acting. some of the most popular are dextrose and maltodextrin.

a sugary drink will provide the same effect as this as they are essentially just sugars. but its far better to use dextrose and maltodextrin as they are the purer form and more nutritious and easier to break down. im not 100% sure about the contents of gatorade as they dont sell it over here but im guessing its the same as most energy drinks so should be high G.I.

    • ANSWER:
Some people claim the acai berry juice drinks cure a myriad of ills - it tends to give me diarrhea and stomach cramps.
Tell your friend to go to the health food store and take a look at the 100% Natural juices and teas there. For antioxidants and energy, I blend herbal tea with natural fruit juices and some water to dilute it a bit and drink it in the morning. Also I recommend he start taking a multi-vitamin to replenish the vitamins he may be losing to medicines and the like. Tell him to schedule long periods of sleep to get the rest his body needs to recuperate, sometimes just plain sleep is a good thing. Eliminate alcohol, coffee, and sodas if he can for a while, and drink water, and 100% fruit juices (watered down if they are too strong at one sitting) - the good stuff like Knudsen's in the health food store, not the cheap stuff. The antioxidants will surely help.

  31. QUESTION:
is Boost Nutritional Energy Drink High Protein Chocolate bad for you?
Well, I do know energy drinks of any kind are bad for you but since I bought a 12 pack Boost Nutritional Energy Drink (high protein chocolate flavor) , would this be bad to drink because it says "Energy Drink", shouldn't that mean that is bad? I know that energy drinks messes up your brain
also, doesn't it make you feel more tired?

    • ANSWER:
A lot of energy drinks are unhealthy because they contain high amounts of caffeine and sugar. I don't think that Boost contains much caffeine, if it contains any at all. But I'm not sure how much sugar it contains. You need to look at the label to see how much sugar is in one serving of Boost. If it is more than 10 grams per serving, that is kind of high. But at least Boost contains a decent amount of protein. Most energy drinks contain little or no protein.

what is your reaction about this report: High-energy drinks can be dangerous for kids?
The typical soda has about 50 milligrams of caffeine in a can. The energy drinks, with names like Rockstar, Go Fast, Venom, Xenergy, Monster and of course Red Bull can have as much as 500 to 1,500 milligrams in a can depending on the size and the brand.

Combine that with multiple cans a day and you create problems for young consumers. A new report in the journal "Pediatrics" warns the drinks could be especially dangerous to children with ADHD, diabetes, sleep issues and eating disorders.

    • ANSWER:
Errr redbull is the only brand of redbull there is. I'm almost 15, and I can drink one of the medium sized redbull cans, and be extremely hyper for like 20 - 30mins... Then I just calm down.. Maybe a little more hyper than normal. I don't do it often, and I've never had any harm come from it. And I'm also ADD and ADHD. I think as long as you don't do it often, there's no problem in it.

  48. QUESTION:
Question about energy drinks and power bars?
Are the high calorie, high sugar, high caffine energy drinks more harm than good? If I drink one just before cycling or running it seems to give me a little boost but I think it causes a big drop after 20 min. or so. Are the power bars any better? Is one brand better than the others?

    • ANSWER:
I noticed a significant difference when I switched from water to a sports drink like Gatorade, not the energy drinks like Red Bull. I've never noticed a "crash," probably because once I started I kept drinking at a fairly regular rate. I bought the PowerBars but found their taste and texture to be obnoxious. I switched to Clif bars and have been happy with them. I regularly ride in events sponsored by one charity that seems to get donations of the GU protein gels. I've tried them and found them to be quick and effective but disgusting in texture and taste. I use them near the end of a century ride and they seem to help at that stage.

Hypertension+smoking+high caffeine drinks was hardly a clever move! Your symptoms suggest it would be wise to seek medical advice. In the longer term you really need to look carefully at your life choices.
