I often get questions about the different energy drinks on the market these days. They are very popular with young people and make some almost crazy claims that you will have a lot of energy, incredible sporting performance and so on.
In my mind I have to ask:
Do they really provide energy or is it just a short term energy?
Are they good for the system?
What really is their "energy" formula?
Will they help you decrease weight?
To begin, let's take a look at what's in the majority of these drinks. The key ingredients are often carbonated water loaded with belly fattening high fructose corn syrup, the amino acid taurine, caffeine, different random B-Vitamins to show you there is something healthy in there.
The big problem with high fructose corn syrup is it is simply empty calories, which tends to turn straight to fat on your belly. High fructose corn syrup is really far worse than plain refined sugar.
If these drinks have a low sugar or sugar free variety, there is another problem you need to be aware of. The artificial chemicals which artificial sweeteners are made of are harmful to your system. Another problem with artificial sweeteners is that many researchers have shown that they lead people to consume more calories without realising it, leading to more weight gain long term. This is a whole new discussion so I won't go into much more detail in this article, but you should trust me that chemicals in your food are never a good idea.
Ok so what does the caffeine do? Many people believe that caffeine gives them energy but this is not really the case. The only real thing that can provide is the calories from protein, fat and carbs. Caffeine is however used as a pep up or to wake people up, it does this through the stimulation of the central nervous system, and does this at a cost to your system requiring more rest to recover. We should remember however, that the more you drink caffeine the less "energy" you will get from it anyway.
If you want to get some caffeine, you can use a more natural source like tea (green, white or oolong). These teas also provide beneficial antioxidants.
Now let's take a look at the formula using b-vitamins and the amino acid taurine in these drinks. Taurine is not particularly unique you can get it from almost any protein source, and the majority of b-vitamins just make for yellow urine. Vitamins are always best obtained from real natural food, they are not properly used when added artificially to foods and drinks.
As you can now see, I believe you should never use these drinks. If you are looking for more energy it would be better to make your own using iced teas (green, white or oolong), a bit of 100% pure berry or pomegranate juice and you might use some non-denatured whey protein.
I hope this article has set straight some of the myths surrounding these drinks and their marketing, use this information so you can make better decisions about the health of your system.

QUESTION:
What could i use that is a legal source of pure energy?
I need energy and I'm trying to find a source that would eliminate energy drinks and things like vitamins.-
ANSWER:
Complex carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, potatoes, muesli etc release energy slowly in a controlled manner for endurance.Simple carbohydrates like glucose and sugar release it quickly for energy bursts.
This is where you would get any 'energy' from. "Energy drinks" are of course basically a con, they might have sugar in them but that's about it.

QUESTION:
Whats in Energy Drinks and How are they Different than pure Caffeine?
I always get the jitters from energy drinks but not from coffee. It could be the increased dose vs that from coffee but I doubt that. What do you think? What is in energy drinks that make them different than pure Caffeine?-
ANSWER:
Energy drinks, compared with caffeine alone, is a combination of sugars, water, taurine, etc.
Energy drinks also contain caffeine to heighten the alertness of a person for quite a while. Caffeine, as in the case of coffee, is enough to keep you awake for approx. 4 hours without sugar.

QUESTION:

I want to make my own energy drink to sell to my friends and Im at a very large school and I am confident that it will get atleast a little bit big because I know a large ammount of people who will buy it. So I dont want to use some caffiene pill and get in trouble for using there product. I dont know if they could tell but I dont want to get in trouble for that. At my school there are multiple people running businesses so dont worry about me getting into trouble at school, I wont
Pretty much I just want to know...
Whats the esiest way to get a large ammount of caffiene without using anothers product, Say some kind of food or something. Remember a large ammount like 100mg caffiene per glass. Thanks
)))-
ANSWER:
You may not get in trouble for running a business, but you`re technically administering a drug and that CAN cause trouble. Yes, caffeine is a drug, and unless you just so happened to study biochemistry in highschool (which you haven`t, you won`t see it until 2nd or 3rd year of university) then there is no way your drink can be safe.
Energy drinks may be all the rage these days, but they`re still full of side effects and can cause serious problems that are often overlooked.
That said, you can get caffeine in pill form, and there is a product called Fein that can be added to any drink.

QUESTION:
isn't it unhealthy to put sugar and salt in water and drink it for energy for sports?
i think it helps, but is it healthy to eat/drink pure sugar like that?-
ANSWER:
Well, I don't understand, are you mixing the sugar and salt in yourself? Sounds like that wouldn't be tasty. I assume your asking about Gatorade and why sugar and salt would be in there. The answer is no, it is not unhealthy. In fact, it is in there because your body needs them and needs them together. Here is why to the best of my ability: You cells have gateways to them called symporters that allow the movement of ions back and forth across their membrane. Now, they don't allow just anything through, and to ensure this they have mechanisms. One of them is that they sometimes won't allow one ion through unless a second one is present. Glucose, or sugar, cannot pass into a cell unless NaCl, or salt, is present. So together they bind into the symporter, changing the shape of it, opening the door, and effectively allowing glucose into where it is needed. By having electrolytes, or salt, freely available you make the transport of glucose much more effective, and thus your workout much more effective, because your muscles are being supplied with energy.
Without salt glucose has less to bind to, the symporter action is less optimal, and so your going to fatigue sooner. But, this action is more necessary during high energy burning periods. So you don't need to drink Gatorade all the time, everything will keep it itself pretty well balanced by itself.

QUESTION:
Brown Dirt/Sand on rim of a bottled drink?
So I bought a G Pure Energy drink today and when I opened it, there was brown sand/dirt on the rim of the bottle and in the bottle cap. I already left the store and was extremely thirsty so I just wiped it off and drank it anyways. Needless to say, afterward I was pretty grossed out by what that could have been. What do you think it was? When I wiped it off it felt sandy in texture and it was light brown with no smell....How did dirt get in my bottle!?!-
ANSWER:
It probably was dirt, or even dried liquid from inside the bottle. Don't worry about the facdt that you drank it. You won't get sick and die, or probably not even get sick at all. You'll be fine. It could have gotten in/on your bottle because it was not sealed properly

QUESTION:
How much drink to take on an 8 hour cycle ride?
I have some isotonic energy drink powder that is added to water to make a drink. Will i need to take pure water aswell, or just take energy drink?
I was thinking of taking some fruit and sammiches for lunch, is this good, what would you recommend?
I'm not sure how far the ride is. We are just gonna ride for 4 hours, stay for lunch, then ride back.
-
ANSWER:
Take two water bottles and take a sip of water every 15 min. Plain water is the best energy drinks just make you thirstier. For energy take along a banana and apple and some candy to eat while you ride. Some people like trail mix but my favorite is Good and Plenty. If you are packing your lunch peanut butter sandwiches are good. I am sure there are places to replenish your water supply or grab an extra snack. Load up on carbs the day before the ride so you start out with a good glycogen supply. Pasta is the best.

QUESTION:
Could I use corn syrup as an energy drink?
The primary reason energy drinks work is because of a synergy between glucose and caffeine, mainly. Corn syrup is basically pure glucose.Monsters work really good for me, but they are too expensive and I can't afford one every day. Caffeine/coffee alone are too short lasting, and I build up a tolerance too quickly. So I just got an idea... buy some corn syrup and mix it with coffee. Theoretically this should produce a cheap, yet effective substitute for energy drinks?
Is there any reason why this wouldn't be better than just caffeine/coffee alone (besides health reasons)?
Also I know about the health concerns... but right now, having energy during the day is something that is utterly important. I've tried sleeping for 6 hours, 10, 20, it doesn't matter... I might have an underlying health/sleeping problem but right now I don't have the time or money or fix that. All I know is that energy drinks are the only thing that work, and I can't afford them at the moment. So I just want to know if there's any reason that a mixture of corn syrup and coffee wouldn't be almost as effective as a monster. Thank you
-
ANSWER:
Sounds fine to me. A strong coffee and glucose would really get you going ! Good luck !When you have time to get a check-up, ask your doctor about sleep apnea. If you are sleeping well and still very tired, that could be the reason.

QUESTION:
What happens to the caffeine extracted from decaf?
I've heard that now something like 10% of coffee is decaf. That would be thousands of tons of coffee that's been stripped of caffeine, and thus, thousands of litres of pure caffeine. Do they put it all in those high-potency energy drinks like Red Bull, and V? What a cushy bizzo! Make one person pay for taking the caffeine out of her drink, and make the person next to her pay for putting that caffeine back into his-
ANSWER:
Most of the caffeine removed in processing is manufactured for use in other products, such as medicines and soft drinks. For example, less than 5 percent of the caffeine found in cola drinks is actually from the kola nut, and many of the popular "high caffeine" soft drinks do not contain kola nut extracts at all. The caffeine content of soft drinks is primarily, and sometimes completely, from the addition of caffeine extracted from decaffeination processes.

ANSWER:
Frequently trainers will attempt to market a 3rd party brand at a marked up price to get some extra bucks in their pockets. I am reasonably well familiar with all the major protein powder brands and I have never heard of this product, so I looked it up. Yes, I see that it apparently comes from India, so I guess that qualifies as "worldover". Compare the price per pound you get on the powders at the gym to what you can get online. Chances are good that you will do better online.Brands of protein that I have used:
AST Sports Science: http://www.ast-ss.com
EAS: http://www.eas.com/
Labrada: http://www.labrada.comAll of the above are good name brand companies with a good reputation in the community.
Places that I have shopped online:
http://www.netrition.com/
http://www.dpsnutrition.net/
http://www.ezpricematch.com/The last link is the one I have been using most often. If I find a lower price than theirs anywhere on the web, they will beat that price by 5%.
Now, the other issue I see here is that your desire is to be pure vegetarian. That is a bit of an issue since I really recommend whey protein.
Many vegetarians try soy protein, but soy is only healthy for you in a fermented form such as Miso. Unfermented soy causes many problems. Read these articles for details:

QUESTION:
some caffeine pure powder measurements?? PLEASE HELP!! i cant find this ANYWHERE.?
I have 100 grams of pure caffeine which equals 100,000 milligrams.
Now i need to find out how many milligrams of pure caffeine are there in a 1/8 teaspoon.
I really need accurate answers,I'm testing new products for an energy drink company im starting. thanks:)-
ANSWER:
It is really shameful how little information there is on the internet. The problem arises from the fact that a gram is a measure of mass, not volume. However, according to one site, 1/8th of a teaspoon of pure caffeine is approximately 210 milligrams. According to another site, 1/10th of a teaspoon is 200 milligrams. According to another site, 1/8th of a teaspoon is 400 milligrams.1/8th of a teaspoon is probably 210 milligrams; I have seen this on several sites. But please do not take my word for it and kill yourself! (Never ingest more than 200 milligrams of caffeine at once; it's pretty easy to overdose on pure caffeine.) Start with 1/16th of a teaspoon, which seems like a safe dose, and work up; if at any time you feel like you've taken too much, don't take any more!

If these calories are not metabolised then they are stored in the Body in the form of Fat. If you have weight problems I would suggest you to switch over to Fruits instead of Juice

QUESTION:
Pure Caffeine?
I am testing the effects of caffeine on people (yes, legally lol) and was wondering what is the best way to get the caffeine.
Can I get it in pure caffeine tablets from the chemist, or anything of such.
I don't want to use energy drinks or coffee, because other factors such as sugar come into effect.Thanks.
-
ANSWER:
Caffeine in a tablet is NOT pure. It has binders, and other stuff in there to hold the tablet together. The only way I know of to get caffeine in a pure, unadulterated form is from a chemical supply house, like Sigma chemical company, or a similar research supply firm. I actually happen to have some from Sigma and use it in research.

As a bass in a choir, how can I get rid of the flem on my throat?
Whenever I sing, for the most part I feel alot of flem on my throat. How can I fix this problem so that a nice smooth pure bass sound can come out? I am a bass by nature, does coffe and energy drinks have to do with it? This is my first time singing in a choir in my whole life time and I truely want to sing beautiful praise to God whenever I sing. any tips?-

You should certainly avoid things like coffee, juice, dairy, soda, energy drinks... ok, actually anything besides water for at least three hours before you sing. Still having some phlegm? Brush your teeth (I'm serious here). Also, I often use a warm lemon water gargle before performing; helps cut the phlegm really well for a clean tone. (Squeeze half a fresh lemon into a coffee cup full of warm water and mix well.)

I think peanut butter will give me enough fuel to maintian energy....I dont drink protien shack at all.. pelase advise me about my diet, is it good, not to drink protien shack and drink 2 raw eggs/ eat pure red meat with no bread...-
ANSWER:
What I think is that you should drink some more milk and water throughout the day. No offense but I seriously think that it is totally unhealthy because in the morning you are supposed to get the ENERGY (or the vitamins, probably) from the cereal/fruit/milk for breakfast. If this helps, maybe you should start..
Eating more fruit and veggies. (corn, carrots, cherries, watermelon, etc!)
Excercise for atleast one hour for 5-6 days a week
Before you eat all of that food, think about this -------> "Am I hungry or do I only want to eat?"
Walk your dog, do some yoga, go to a gym, just MOVE your body!!
I seriously hope that this helps you!

QUESTION:
Wouldn't snorting pure caffeine be much, much healthier than normal methods of consumption?
Although snorting drugs isn't usually associated with "good health", if you think about it, it seems it maybe should be in terms of caffeine.Alot of people, including me, basically need caffeine to function and get through the day. People take it by drinking it is sugary sodas and energy drinks, or eating it in chocolate. These methods work to get the caffeine in your blood stream, sure, but with it comes diabetes, obesity, stained teeth, ext.
Snorting pure caffeine extract, on the other hand, would get it into your blood stream much faster than any other method, including pills, so it not only seems the healthiest way to me, but also the most efficient. Your thoughts on this? And please dont answer if your completely uneducated about anything i just said
-
ANSWER:
Actually, the most direct way to get caffine into your bloodstream would be to inject it with a syringe. Which in a way is just wrong. If perforating your nasal passageway with caffine isn't bad enough then apparently stabbing yourself with a needle is okay then, am I right? Can't say I completely agree with this.

QUESTION:
Lemonade and Water Detox, I want purer skin and more energy?
My dad told me that if you drink only water and lemonade for 10 days your skin gets healthier you get and you get more energy and it kills all the impurities and bad stuff in your body, has anyone ever tried it, and does it work?? please help want to start it this friday (thats if it works of course) =]-
ANSWER:
A water and lemonade detox for 10 days will not make your skin get healthier. That diet lacks the needed vitamins, nutrients, and foods that are essential for healthy skin. Your dad is probably refering to that fad master cleanse diet which is just that, a fad diet that can cause more harm then good if done for that long of a period. I wont get into too much detail about what can happen but when you body goes for so long without real food your body enters starvation or survival mode. This is when your body starts storing anything it can and burns off muscle on your body so it can keep your vital organs running for as long as possible. Does that sound healthy? Its not.Your body is naturally detoxing every minute, every hour, every day. Our bodies are built to handle the strains of waste and impurities. Why do so many people think that for some reason our body can not handle anything on its own and we need to try and jump in and help it in totally unhealthy way (By cutting off its vitamins, nutrients for it to work properly). Ways we can help our bodies manage the waste by-products is by drinking lots of water and controlling what food we give it in the first place. Simply make sure you get the recommended amount of water a day (around .66 times your body weight in ounces) and start feeding it with healthy foods and vitamins essential for a better body and healthier skin. Perhaps start taking a multi-vitamin to make sure you are helping give yoru body the recommended amount so it can perform at its peak. Do this will help a lot better then resorting to lemonade for all of your health.
