Sugar 'High' or Energy?

Although sugar is a primary source of energy, over-consumption of sugar is conversely a major cause for fatigue.

You may think your healthy diet is free of sugars if you avoid candy and chocolate, but refined carbohydrates such as white bread and starchy processed foods can quickly turn to sugar in the bloodstream, and can be equally damaging.

Foods with a low GI include most vegetables and fruits, legumes/pulses, whole grains and nuts. Foods with a high GI are white bread, white rice, processed breakfast cereals and baked potatoes.

Eating a diet high in fiber, with foods which are low on the glycemic index, is the best way to provide a natural energy booster which will last all day. Meals should be small but frequent to keep the levels of blood sugar steady.

      It's fine. Sparks is either 7 or 8%, depending on which one you have. This is enough to preserve it from November.

      In fact, I just bought a bottle of Orval trappist ale bottled in September. It says drink before September 2013! And its 6.9%, less than your Sparks.

    My friend has been depressed and was put on Xanax. He goes on drinking binges that last for several days during which he does not sleep and barely eats. He drinks Sparks and Tilt "energy" drinks that contain alcohol and actually stays awake for 2 days at a time. He also drinks beer. In addition to this, he has mild diabetes.

    He's about 6' tall and medium build. I'm afraid this is going to kill him. I offer food as often as possible but I don't know what else to do. Any information about what this will actually do to his body would be helpful. thanks.
    I forgot to add, he's in his early 30's.
    I think what I am going to do is show him this thread - so what ever you want to tell him, have at it.
    I forgot also he has mentioned that anxiety attacks are one of the problems. Maybe I am wrong in my impression about why the Xanax was prescribed, although he's mentioned depression being a problem too. Thanks to everyone for the help.
    Another factor is that he smokes heavily when he's on these binges, and is only a light smoker at other times. I know when I used to smoke cigarettes and didn't smoke for a long time, it would really give me a rush. I'm trying to figure out how he can stay up all night and keep going to the next night, I could never do that and I can't imagine that it is healthy in any way.

      I'm wondering why he was put on Xanax for depression. It's not an anti-depressant. It's a benzodiazepine and is made for anxiety and stress. So, he should actually go back to the Doctor and request an anti-depressant and if the Doctor won't switch his medication, have him see somebody else. It's really distressing to hear he's mixing Xanax and alcohol. The alcohol from the beer is the same as the alcohol in the energy drinks so it doesn't matter what source it comes from. Alcohol and Xanax should NEVER be mixed. If he takes too much of either one and has mixed the two, he can overdose.
      Many celebrities have died as a result of a benzodiazepine and alcohol. It's deadly. It's good you're giving him food, it might slow the absorption rate but still, if he takes too high a dose it could be fatal. He shouldn't add fuel to the fire and also consume the energy drinks. Not only is he taking in more alcohol but probably caffeine or guarana as well, both stimulants that will not mix well with the alcohol or Xanax. So basically, he's taking an upper and two downers and this wreaks havoc on the central nervous system. The brain gets confused and sends mixed signals to nervous system. Please try and talk him into getting counciling for whatever is troubling him and urge him to get off the Xanax and onto a good anti-depressant. And of course, if you can get him to at least cut down on the alcohol (if he won't stop altogether) that would be great. Good luck, hope this helps.

      It contains Taurine! Almost 100% of all Taurine is produced from slaughterhouse offal! In other words it's not even going to be vegetarian.

      Unless a product specifically states that their Taurine is derived using bacterial synthesis from vegan sources it is NOT going to be veggie friendly. Beware of companies that state our Taurine is synthetic or synthesized. Under current legal guidelines animal derived Taurine can qualify as synthetic if it is produced by enzymatic action on other animal amides such as L-Carnitine.

      There are NO "energy" drinks that are vegan or vegetarian! Due to the *much* higher cost of producing vegan Taurine it is only used in specialty pet foods and some medicines!

      Several dozen college students around here (I'm ina town with 3 big Universities) have ended up in the ER from them. Alcohol is a depressant. It slows your system down. Energy drinks speed it up. Also, energy drinks are NOT regulated by the FDA, so they can put just about anything in them. Mixing the two is stupid, your system is trying to speed up and slow down all while elimiating alcohol, caffeine and God knows what else.

      To the best of my knowledge, only 2 guys died from mixing RedBull and Vodka - at least around here. Just don't be stupid. If you feel funny, STOP drinking them!! :p And they're certainly not ment to be a "binge" drink.

      They are energy drinks but also malt liquor they have about (6 or 7% alcohol, I believe).

      They taste like Smarties (the candy) to me. They are very, very sweet.

      There are three kinds of Sparks:
      Blue - Sparks Lite - fewer calories
      Orange - Original Sparks
      Black - Sparks Heavy - extra alcohol (8 or 9%)

      Buying them is sometimes difficult. It depends on where you live - in Illinois I can find them at some gas stations, grocery stores, or liquor stores. In other states it will be more hit or miss as not every place that sells alcohol sells Sparks - I'd go to a place that sells both beer and wine coolers for the best chance.

      If you want a low carb one you want to lose weight, or not raise your blood sugar.

      Energy drinks have very dangerous amounts of caffeine. But in addition to that, that amount of caffeine will put your metabolism so slow that you will never lose weight. And caffeine raises your blood sugar. so in answer to your question I would say...

      Just have a weak cup of coffee or tea instead.

      Pre-workout
      About 45 to 60 minutes before your workout, eat a small, easily digested meal composed of complex carbs. This can even be a liquid complex carb shake (Myoplex sport). It will help control your blood glucose during your workout and help give you the energy to get through it.

      During Workout
      Unless you are running hard for extending periods of time, gatorade is completely unnecessary and can actually hamper your workouts. Stick with water, about 6-8 ounces every 30 minutes.

      Post-Workout
      Within 10 minutes of finishing your workout, you should again be having some form of complex carb or carb shake. Don't miss this window.

      After 1 hour
      Lean meat or fish with light veggie and more water.

    I was told by someone I know that if you drink Sparks beer/energy drink, you can't smell any alcohol. Is this true? I tried smelling it, but I don't have that good of a sniffer.       Possibly. More likely though, they'll see your orange tongue. If you're just drinking one, you're probably fine, and you can write off the orange tongue as Fanta or something.

    Are the drinks "Tilt" and "Sparks" still considered energy drinks?
    I know recently Anheuser-Busch was under a lawsuit dealing with Tilt, their brand of energy drink that contained alcohol, and I heard that they removed the caffeine from the drink. Is this true? If so, is it still considered an energy drink?

    I looked it up on their website and it's now called a "Premium flavored malt beverage."

    My uncle works with a company that distributes Miller and other alcohol beverages. He was telling me of a new drink they make, and I want to say the name of it was Juice. Its suppose to be like Sparks I think and a high alcohol content.

      It's called "Joose" and yes, it is similar to Sparks, in that it is an Alco-Energy Drink. We've had it in MI for nearly a year, and it does nowhere near as good as Sparks.
      They're 24 oz cans, and the alcohol is 9.9% by volume, which is higher than Sparks, but the taste just isn't as good.
      I'm trying to stay away from the damn things altogether, since there's so much sugar in them, but Sparks orange is SOOO refreshing.

      as for "sparks engergy drink" you can't make it at home. its a specific brand of retail drink, so they go through a long process of protecting their exact formula and process to create their drink. if anyone could make it... the company wouldn't be able to sell it.

      I've known people to mix vodka and redbull, but the have been some recent studies about energy drinks putting alot of stress on younger adults.. so the mix of both might not be good for you.. butthen again... alcohol technically toxic to your system anyway.. so.. Its up to you...

      The good thing about sparks is it has sulfites in it that give you the gitty drink feeling that you have when you have had too much wine. With the combination of caffeine it does give you alertness. there is also one in a blue can that is Sparks light which has less sugar in it. if you are drinking many of them you might have a sugar overload, but if you are limiting your intake to reasonable levels I assure you that they are fine.

      This warning/myth started on the internet sometime in 2000. True, there are several "herbal" additive that are not tested/studied by the FDA concerning their long term affects, but they will not kill you, at least not in the short term.
